April 7, 2016Following safety Donte Whitner being released by the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, the veteran expressed his disappointment with the team cutting him so late in free agency cycle, this after many teams have already filled their rosters and the bonuses will now be different if and when he signs with another team. But the safety wasn’t alone. Along with Whitner, former Browns linebacker Karlos Dansby also expressed his disappointment with the team, doing so in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Dansby went in to the offseason believing both players would be released, but was pleasantly surprised when Whitner was kept aboard. At least until he wasn’t.
“I told him, I said ‘look man, as soon as I get released, I’m going where I’m going to get a ring,”’ he said. “He was like ‘man, you think they’re going to let us go?’ I said ‘let’s keep it real, we’re 3-13, there’s going to be a new coach, a new scheme.’ I said ‘all the vets gotta go. It’s just how the game goes, man, and we’ve both been on that side of the stick before.
“I thought they were going to keep him on because he’s a Cleveland kid, homegrown, and I’m thinking if they let me go, they’re going to keep Donte on. That was my thinking, because both of us were strong leaders on the defense.
To see it happen like that late into the free agency, man, it just wasn’t cool. It wasn’t cool at all. As a professional, man, that man earned the right to do his job…just respect him and let him go.”
It goes without saying both Dansby and Whitner appear to be upset about the way the team handled the release and timeliness of the Cleveland native. Dansby has since gone on to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals on his quest to get that ring. Whitner entered the free agent market as the second-best safety behind Reggie Nelson who just signed a two-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.
The Browns, meanwhile, the Browns have Jordan Poyer and Rahim Moore as their top safeties left on their gutted roster, something that’s also “not cool at all.”

FWIW: Whenever anyone claims to be a leader of something, I like to look at where their organization has been under their “leadership.”

Except we have players who turned down Cleveland money to go to “better” situations.
And others have come here instead of “better” situations. Players decide all the time between teams. Having cash to pay is not equivalent to 100% signing success rate for any team nor is being “better.”
