As predicted, Cardale Jones’ statements are mischaracterized as “epic Twitter rant”

April 11, 2016In an off-season that has already seen three freshman transfer from the Ohio State men’s basketball program, it looks as though the Buckeyes suffered yet another loss. After the school announced the hire in a statement over the weekend, now former Buckeyes assistant coach Jeff Boals was introduced on Monday as the next head coach at Stony Brook. The new head coach was obviously very excited for his future.
“We are extremely excited to become a part of the Stony Brook community and university,” Boals said. “We are grateful for the opportunity that Dr. Stanley and Shawn Heilbron have given me and I look forward to working with the team, building upon the success of last season and continuing it into the future. I can’t wait to get started.”

After joining head coach Thad Matta’s staff in 2009, this will be Boals’ first head coaching job. His previous stints as an assistant were at Akron, Robert Morris, Marshall, Ohio, and the University of Charleston.
The Ohio University graduate will replace former head coach Steve Pikiell, who took the head coaching job at Rutgers shortly after leading Stony Brook to the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. In 11 seasons with Stony Brook, he was the winningest coach in the program’s history with a 190-155 record. Pikiell’s Seawolves have won at least 22 games in six of the past seven seasons, reaching the American East Tournament title game five times in that seven-year span.
Stony Brook’s athletic director was also very excited to welcome the new head coach that will hopefully continue the success that the team has had in the past few years.
“My focus during this search was to find the right person who could lead Stony Brook men’s basketball to new heights, and Jeff Boals is the right guy at the right time. He is prepared for this opportunity, which comes at a critical time in our history following our first America East title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Jeff has coached at the highest level as a member of Thad Matta’s staff at Ohio State and he understands what it takes to win. I am excited for our players to learn from him on the floor and, more importantly, he will serve as a strong mentor to our student-athletes in all areas of their lives outside of basketball. We look forward to welcoming Jeff, Katie, Sydney and Chase to Long Island and the Seawolves family.”
While in charge of Ohio State’s defense in his time in Columbus, Boals was also arguably the Buckeyes best recruiter on the coaching staff, outside of Matta. With the Buckeyes, Boals totaled 193 wins, three Big Ten regular season titles, four apperances in the Big Ten tournament title game (three championships), four NCAA Sweet 16s, an Elite Eight (2013), and a NCAA Final Four in New Orleans (2012). The Buckeyes have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in six of seven years he has been on the coaching staff. 2016-17 was the lone season that they did not make March Madness with Boals as an assistant.
Boals will be the fifth Ohio State assistant under Matta who will move on to a head coaching job. John Groce (Illinois), Alan Major (Charlotte), Archie Miller (Dayton) and Brandon Miller (Xavier) were the other assistants.

Matta will now have to find another assistant to join Greg Paulus and Dave Dickerson on his staff. Paulus has been with the Buckeyes for three years, while Dickerson has been with Matta for seven.
He may need to find a new assistant coach to add to his staff, but Matta is very happy for Boals and his former assistant’s future.
“I’m very excited for Jeff, his family, and Stony Brook University. Jeff has done a remarkable job at The Ohio State University in his seven years as a Buckeye. He is certainly ready to be a head coach and has an amazing opportunity at such a fine institution. Jeff has a great basketball mind and will bring energy and enthusiasm to the great situation that Stony Brook University offers.”
And, it appears Stony Brook is quite excited for their new coach too.
