Browns are underdogs in every game in 2016
April 22, 2016NBA Playoffs with Brian Windhorst, Kristen Ledlow and Zach Harper – WFNY Podcast No. 488
April 22, 2016When the Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Robert Griffin III, many believed that he would be the team’s starting quarterback heading into the 2016 season. But, Executive Vice President Sashi Brown knows that the newly acquired gunslinger must prove himself and earn the starting nod.
From Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
“Robert isn’t even our starting quarterback yet. He has to earn that spot. Is he another piece of our roster? Absolutely. In terms of bringing Robert to Cleveland, we’re excited about the potential for him to earn that starting job. On its merits of No. 2 versus what we were able to acquire, this was the right choice for building our roster and where we sit now.”
While RG3 may arguably be the most talented quarterback on the Browns, he will still have to compete with Josh McCown, Austin Davis, and Connor Shaw for the starting job prior to the start of the season. With already four quarterbacks competing, that could have been part of the reason why the Browns were able to trade their No. 2 overall pick to the Rams for their No. 8 overall pick (and many other picks), along with the fact that the front office could have been unsure on if California quarterback Jared Goff or North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz were franchise-changing quarterbacks.
The Browns may have signed RG3, but Brown admitted that the signing did not affect the team’s continuous search for a franchise quarterback, whether it be in the draft, free agency, or acquired in a trade.
“We haven’t solved that in any stretch by acquiring (QB Robert) Griffin (III).
“Like every player on our football team. They’ve got to earn the right to be the starter here for the Browns. Right now outside of (OL) Joe Thomas, there’s not a lot of guys that have a lot of skins on the wall for me. Joe will be the first to tell you he knows he has to be at his best just like everybody else. I’m not in the business of handing anybody anything.”
Although many expect the former Washington Redskin to be the Browns starting quarterback come fall, Brown reassured the fact that Griffin will not be placed on a pedestal and will have to compete for a starting job, just like every other player on the team.

EVERYBODY should have to earn their spot , with the exception of joe thomas … and maybe joe haden.
i am halfway , somewhat , fairly confident RGIII will end-up the starter.
First, context: that wasn’t a Browns pronouncement, that was a response to a reporter’s assumption that the job is Griffin’s. Silly season is when all those in front of a mic must leave the impression that all options are open. Sowing doubt is good.
Secondly, unless they add one in the draft, Griffin is the starter at QB. Whether that’s a good thing for him to know or not, he knows that, Hue knows that and so does Sashi. In the unlikely event McCown is still on the roster, he doesn’t have the brains or durability to stay out of harm’s way.
“He’s not even our starting quarterback yet. Let’s be real. There’s, like, a 90% chance he gets injured in the pre-season.”
Griffin doesn’t sign with CLEVELAND to compete for a QB job. He would sign with Denver, or New York Jets to compete, but he wouldn’t sign with the Browns unless they promised him the gig.
“Right now outside of (OL) Joe Thomas, there’s not a lot of guys that have a lot of skins on the wall for me.”
Side bar, but anyone know the etymology of “skins on the wall”? As in diploma meaning credentials? Layers of wallpaper meaning experience? Actual skins as in Joe Thomas is a serial killer?
Just curious and Google has failed.
Me too. Sashi Brown has a friendly and direct way of talking, but in the end this is just normal front office speak. You aren’t the franchise QB until a team drafts you or pays you to be the franchise QB.
No solid evidence, but I would think this is a hunting reference. Represents accomplishments.
You doubt the persuasive powers of Hue?
I’m pretty sure I heard once upon a time that diplomas used to be made out of sheepskin. Does that sound right to anybody else? It’s my best guess anyway.
I think skins on the wall, or pelts on the wall, mean hunting trophies.
Haden needs to figure out how to play a whole season first.
Thomas ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.
