ESPN covers the friendship of LeBron James and Dwayne Wade
May 20, 2016Video: LeBron James and the Cavaliers try to ruin Ty Lue’s suit!
May 20, 2016To start off their three selections of the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Browns selected DL Carl Nassib of Penn State at No. 65 overall. Nassib is a player who could fit well into the Browns defense, filling the gapping hole at the defensive end spot in Ray Horton’s 3-4 defense. He is another player who the Browns selected who was highly productive in college. In 13 games as a senior last year, he posted 46 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, one interception, one pass break up, two passes defended and six forced fumbles. His 15.5 sacks led the entire Division I-A.
So, what are the Browns getting in their newest defensive lineman? Let’s take a look at the film to examine Carl Nassib’s strengths and weaknesses.
Draft Pick Film Rooms: WR Corey Coleman, EDGE Emmanuel Ogbah, DL Carl Nassib
Strengths
Explosive Off the Snap with Good Leverage
https://gfycat.com/JoyfulCreativeItaliangreyhound
This play shows Carl Nassib’s explosive ability off the snap, while going up field with good leverage. He is the first one off the snap, blasting quickly up field. His quick reaction gains a big advantage against the Buffalo offensive tackle, allowing him to get the edge and the eventual forced fumble on the quarterback. This ability to quickly break off the snap helps make him a disruptive force in the backfield.
Nassib may not have the most expansive pass rush skillset, but his quick get-off can gain him a quick advantage against the blocker. The second important part of this play is his solid pad level to stay low and not allow the blocker to stand him up. Especially for a player his height, he plays pretty low, driving with his legs, while using good extension of his arms. Explosion and good leverage is a great combination to be a disruptive force in the backfield.
Solid athleticism/great motor

This play shows Nassib’s athleticism and great non-stop motor. On the play, he is too fast for the Ohio State tackle, outrunning him to the edge. He then has the speed to track down the quarterback out of the pocket and the motor to not stop running to the ball.
At 6-foot-7, 277 pounds, the Penn State defensive lineman has solid athleticism for a man his size. He has good straightline speed, allowing him to chase down ball carriers to the sidelines. As I showed earlier, he has explosiveness of the line, along with the ability to move in space, showing at times to play in zone coverage. His motor is never ending. He plays to the whistle, chasing down plays, including ones down field. It is a great combination to have athleticism and a high motor and Nassib has this combo.
Shedding Blocks

This play shows one of Nassib’s best skills, shedding blocks. On the play, he immediately makes contact with the Ohio blocker, but quickly swipes him out of the way to get to the ball carrier and make the tackle. His long arms and good hands allow him to control blockers and be able to disengage in a moments notice to get free and make a play on the ball. Nassib has multiple ways to get away from the blocks, making it difficult for offensive linemen to know what is coming. He pairs this ability with his good vision, allowing him to shed the block at the right time to be in position to make a tackle.
Good Length

Nassib uses his length well in his game and this play showcases it. He uses his long arms to extend and drive the Buffalo blocker back right into the running back for loss of yardage. At 6-foot-7 and 34 1/2-inch arms, he has very good length for a defensive lineman.
Nassib’s length makes it difficult to get to his body and control. He uses his arm extension to keep blockers away from him, while also keeping his eyes on the backfield. As I noted before, he plays with good leverage, which complements his length, allowing him to drive blockers back. He also can use his length to strip balls away from the ball carrier, causing six fumbles last season. Nassib has ideal length to be a 3-4 defensive end for the Browns.
Weaknesses
Too Much Lean/Over Aggressiveness/Lack of Discipline
https://gfycat.com/SnoopySnivelingEmperorshrimp
This plays shows an example of his ability to be too forward leaning along with his propensity to be too aggressive, lacking patience. He quickly gets off the line and tries to get his hands on the Buffalo tight end, lunging toward him. But, the tight end goes out for a route, causing Nassib to fall forward and get off balance. He plays with good pad level and leverage, but sometimes he can get too low and lean too much forward. This can cause him to get off balance and fall to the ground too often. He needs to stay more balanced and not get too ahead of himself and fall over.
Along the same lines, Nassib can be too aggressive and get out of position on a play. He can be too active, trying to go too hard, which can cause him to run himself out of the play. This can cause him to sometimes lose his edge responsibilities, allowing the edge to be open. He needs to show more patience and discipline in his game.
Strength and Size at the Point of Attack
https://gfycat.com/WellwornRemorsefulFlicker
This plays shows an area where Nassib needs work: Strength at the point of attack. On the play, the Ohio State blocker completely controls Nassib, driving him to the sideline where he eventually lost his balance and fell down. If he cannot shed the block, he can be pushed back because of his lack of great strength and size. Especially for his expected role as the five technique on the Browns defensive line, he will need to add weight and strength to contend in the trenches.
The Penn State product needs to be able to withstand the power of the NFL offensive linemen to stand his ground and not get pushed off his spot. Adding size should help him in this area, because he has the frame to put on the needed weight. But, at this point in his career, he is not ready to be a stout player at the point of attack.

3.5 months of warm weather and baseball, that is. I always get excited for the Browns season to start, but it’s hard to look forward to the end of summer. Opening day in the NFL is always bittersweet for me because I hear John Snow in my head whispering “Winter is coming.” MLB opening day, on the other hand, is unbridled joyousness – football is long gone, the NBA season is entering its boring period, and it represents the approaching spring.
