May 2, 2016LeBron James’ Los Angeles-based home will be put to good use in the coming months. In what may have been the worst-kept secret since the Cleveland Cavaliers attempted to bring LeBron James back to Cleveland in 2014, the four-time MVP has been officially tabbed as a star in the movie Space Jam 2. A sequel to the mid-90s hit starring Michael Jordan and a host of other, James, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will play himself in the basketball-themed cartoon from Warner Bros.
Here are the details:
Justin Lin, Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello are ready to shoot some intergalactic hoops with LeBron James. The Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond helmer is co-writing with Dodge and Botello the Warner Bros.’ sequel Space Jam 2. Lin is also eyeing to direct and produce via his Perfect Storm Entertainment, and sources say he will be thoroughly involved in the creative development of the project.
Rumors of a follow-up to the live action/animated 1996 hit have been brewing for years, and picked up again when James and his company SpringHill Entertainment signed a deal with Warner Bros. in July. The Cleveland Cavaliers NBA player, who recently appeared in Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck, will star in Space Jam 2.
As inferred, James’ deal with Warner Bros. last summer led to immediate speculation surrounding the project. James’ role—also playing himself—in Jud Apatow’s Trainwreck was met with high acclaim, but would be filling gigantic shoes starting in the sequel of a film that netted over $230 million.
As many have stated, Space Jam is a movie that thrives more on nostalgia than cinematography. Given the improvements in technology since the original release, what Warner Bros. has in store will be a topic of intrigue. After years of comparing James to Jordan on the court, fans will now have a chance to compare their skills on the silver screen.
EDIT (4:00 p.m. EST): Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon is now reporting the writer has been hired for Space Jam 2, but neither a director nor LeBron James is officially signed. We will keep you up to date as the details emerge.
