Sane Cavs talk with Brian Spaeth – WFNY Podcast No. 502
May 24, 2016Ball Played: The Undefeated
May 25, 2016The college football season may still be over three months away, but some Las Vegas sportsbooks are already projecting how many wins many of the top college football programs will get during the 2016 regular season. Surprisingly, the Ohio State Buckeyes over-under is set at just 8.5, per ESPN’s David Payne Pardum.
Opening college football season win totals @GoldenNuggetLV:
Michigan 9.5 (-120o)
Ohio St 8.5 (-115o)
Notre Dame 9 (-125u)
Tennessee 10— David Payne Purdum (@DavidPurdum) May 19, 2016
The Bucks may have lost plenty of talent to the NFL, including 12 drafted players and three others who were signed as undrafted free agents, but they didn’t lose head coach Urban Meyer, which is vitally important. Even with the loss of so much talent, Ohio State will return stars such as quarterback J.T. Barrett, offensive lineman Pat Elflein, lineback Raekwon McMillan, and plenty of other young talent that has not gotten the chance to prove themselves on the big stage yet.
The Buckeyes may have plenty of questions and unknowns heading into 2016, but with the talent that they still have along with head coach Urban Meyer (and the rest of the coaching staff), they still have a good shot to compete for a Big Ten championship. Some perspective is that Meyer is 50-4 in four seasons in Columbus; the most games the head coach has lost in a single season with the Buckeyes is two (in 2013). That means the Ohio State will have to lose as many (or more) games as Meyer has lost since being in Columbus. For what it’s worth, the last time one of Meyer’s teams have lost at least four regular season games was in 2010, with the Florida Gators.
With a much tougher schedule (including non-conference) than 2015 and plenty of unknown, Ohio State will have to go just 9-3 during the regular season to cover the Las Vegas sportsbook’s projection.
Don’t forget, in mid-February, the Buckeyes became the odds-on favorite to win the 2017 College Football Playoff Championship.
2016 schedule:
- September 3: vs. Bowling Green
- September 10: vs. Tulsa
- September 17: at Oklahoma
- October 1: vs. Rutgers
- October 8: vs. Indiana
- October 15: at Wisconsin
- October 22: at Penn State
- October 29: vs. Northwestern
- November 5: vs. Nebraska
- November 12: at Maryland
- November 19: at Michigan State
- November 26: vs. Michigan

8.5?
Take the over, and bet the house.
(11.5 is more like it.)
Urban gets to play the underdog card with a ton of young talent at his disposal?

It’s not 8.5 anymore. The sharp money has moved it to 9. The over 8.5 was -140 or -150 for those who care.
Ill bet your house on the under 11.5.
Returning qb and a strong d line

Even as I would hope the under would come to pass (with every fiber of my Michigan fan being), I have a hard time finding three losses on that schedule, let alone four. 8.5 seems like a desperate plea for action from Vegas.

as a Michigan fan, I wanted to get in on that when it was first announced (on the over) but didnt want to have to tie up that mortgage payment until November
Even if you assume they lose to Oklahoma, that line is silly. And MSU lost just as much as OSU. IF (big if) they have 2 losses going into the Game they’ll be at the hands of Oklahoma and Wisky
I really don’t see any reason to fear Wisconsin. I’ve got OSU losing at Oklahoma (that’s just a tough game, no matter what), but beyond that… I could envision scenarios where they lose to Wisconsin, Penn State (you KNOW PSU will make that one a night/white out game), MSU, and UM.
But, I just can’t see them losing to more than one of those four B1G teams. MSU didn’t lose the caliber of players OSU did, but they lost almost as much in terms of contributions to their team. The losses of Cook, Burbridge, and the OL alone make me think they won’t beat OSU or UM, just because those two teams should have the two best overall defenses in the conference.
But, hell, injuries happen. Dropped punt snaps happen. Running over and over into the strength of MSU’s defense and not lighting up their secondary happens.
Honest question:
How do vacated wins work in Vegas? Could some Michigan fan go back with their receipt from 2010 they found in a couch cushion and try to claim they won the “under”?
Even Vegas acknowledges that when a team gets beaten on the field, like Meatchicken got crushed, they lost like the losers they were when they lost. No amount of NCAA shenaniganery can overcome the obviousness of humiliating defeat.
Regardless of how many players the Buckeyes lost, they didn’t lose Urban Meyer — so I’ll take the over.
