Kaluka Maiava: From Boar Hunting to Ball Hawk

May 5, 2009(Update: Though a few months later, Edwards has in fact been traded to the Jets.)
The Braylon Edwards trade rumors fell off of a steep slope after the NFL Draft was complete and the New York Giants landed one of the top wide receivers in the pool in Hakeem Nicks. However, a recent claim by Plain Dealer beat writer Tony Grossi claims that my Edwards Advisory System still has some shelf life to it. In the extended version of the weekly “Hey, Tony” column, Grossi has the following:
Hey, Tony: Thomas Jones is unhappy with the Jets and last season put up Pro Bowl numbers including 1,300 yards and 13 TDs. The Jets drafted Shonn Greene and already have Leon Washington. Any chance the Jets release Jones and he becomes the next Cleveland Jet? A two-headed monster pounding the rock in Cleveland would be a welcome sight. — Aaron Howell, Canton.
Hey, Aaron: Rex Ryan knows that Mangini would scoop up Jones in a New York second if Jones were released. More likely is a future trade involving Jones and, yes, Edwards. You heard it here first.
I’m not sure what basis Grossi has for making this speculation, but it would not surprise me if the Browns continue to look to the Jets for any and all trade possibilities.
Currently, we have two defensive linemen, two linebackers and two defensive backs that were former Jets. Adding Jones to the mix would accompany Brett Ratliff on the offensive side of the ball and simply add more fuel to the proverbial “Cleveland Jets” fire.
As mentioned above, the Jets drafted Iowa’s Shonne Greene, and likely have a bigger role in the future of Leon Washington. They have a hole at wide receiver since Laveranues Coles was picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals. Edwards would be a more than adequate replacement for Coles, but I’m struggling to see what role we would have for Jones.
Sure, he is coming off of a solid season, but he is not exactly on the growth side of his career.
Of course, it would also depend on what else the Browns would receive in terms of added compensation, as there is no way that a straight up deal would benefit the Browns. The asking price in the past was a first- and third-round selection. Besides, with the addion of James Davis to a backfield that already has Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison, couldn’t we already have our “two-headed monster?”

I will be angry if this trade happens and the Browns don’t get at least a 2nd Rd. pick out of it. Thomas Jones is older than Jamal Lewis and has maybe 2 good years left in him, plus one more Jet would push the Browns over the threshold and force us to rename the team the Cleveland Jets
Had a feeling this was coming when I seen the Jets were in for rumors dealing with Plaxico.
BE NYC NK
I think this is more Grossi thinking that our new regime is incompetent and being pissed that he no longer has as much of an open door as he did under Phil and Romeo making his job an actual work experience
If the Jets are thinking of cutting Jones, Kokinis would have to get Jones and a 1st round pick for Braylon (and maybe the Browns throw in a 4th to even things out).
B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Braylon to the Jets. Has a nice ring to it.
BTW, I watched a replay of Mangini’s entire press conference after the first day of rookie workouts, and I cannot understand why so many people in the media dislike they guy. He was personable, interesting, polite, candid. Nothing like the gruntin’ n groanin’ Belichick when he was here.
On draft day, Brinda on KNR did nothing but bash Mangini. I don’t get it.
If we’re trading Braylon, let’s get something we can use for him, not a RB. With all the holes we have, couldn’t we get some players to fill those holes?
Or hold out for the 1 & 3
#6, wait until the season starts. the honeymoon is still on.
i have a feeling we will see a more short, smug guy when the games start rolling.
i for one don’t care about any demeanor with the media when it comes to football coaches. i just love the fans that tried to blame our woes on romeo not being this or that way with the media, i mean come on. it’s not because romeo doesn’t act a certain way, it’s because the roster couldn’t compete in the sec.
as far as braylon for tj? no way. i’d rather wait a year and then get a 1&3 for him. it’s a contract year so you know he won’t drop the ball like he did last year.
thomas jones would do no good here, by the time this team is ready to compete with the steelers in this division, he’ll be a senior citizen in running back years. he’s already up there as it is.
no thanks, new york.
oh, and ps, yew york, if you heard lbj’s presser today, you’ll also realize he’s not going there either.

“A more short, smug guy” – DAVID STERN?!
Maybe Al Davis will wanna trade us Kirk Morrison and a 1st for BE? I mean he did Draft Heyward-Bey at #7.
this is Grossi just saying something to say it. I would almost guarantee that it has no merit. Braylon will be on the browns this year.
Mangini is not going to trade Braylon for a RB. Unless a first rounder is involved, Braylon is not going anywhere….
I like the Furrey signing…..

Braylon Edwards finally caught something; a plane to New York!
