Rafaels Take Turns Blowing Saves

While I’m sure we’ll have a recap of today’s game some time tomorrow, I thought this one deserved a bit of attention.

Here’s the pitching half of the box score from the game two nights ago:

5/26/08 Box

And now, the same half of the box score, but from today.

5/28/08 Box

You’ll notice two starting pitchers.  Both would have been considered quality starts if Jake Westbrook would have gone a sixth inning.  I guess we can let him pass since, you know, he did just get activated from the disabled list and all.  But even Jake only allowed five hits and wasn’t in line for the win, we finally scored runs…and still lost.

Could there be a better box score abbreviation than “BS?”  Very fitting, I tell you.

A good poll question may actually be which has been more painful to watch this year: the offense or the bullpen? The two units are clearly locked in a steel-cage death match for the title of “Greatest Point of Suck” in Major League Baseball. Now, while it is very difficult to argue with the sheer volume of atrociousness that the offense has put out, bear in mind that the bullpen has definitely taken full advantage of their more limited opportunities to anti-shine…

I will vote bullpen. I have to keep hope alive that any day now the bats will magically turn on. Granted an unrealitic hope but hope none the less.
