Who’s Hitting Better Than the Indians…

blindsquirell1.jpgYou mean besides everyone?

I went to a Dayton Dragons game last night. They are the low A affiliate of the Reds. It was entertaining enough, they lost 10-8. The game featured 30 hits and more than 13 pitchers. When I got home I checked the Tribe score on the net, and was surprised to see the Indians had scored so many runs. Even more surprised to see Casey Blake’s stats. But I kind of figured it was the proverbial blind squirrel situation.

I’ve been hearing and reading a lot about Andy Marte lately. It seems that everyone wants to see him get the bulk of the playing time at third. Marte’s stats- 6 hits in 40 at bats, for a .150 average, 0 home runs, 1 double, 0 RBI, 10 strikeouts. Just for fun, let’s see who hitting better than that shall we? (Hat tip to All Bets Are Off, Bruce Drennan.)

Notice anything unusual about this list of hitters? That’s right, they are all pitchers! And everyone of them is hitting better than Andy Marte. You will find the at bats pretty similar in fact. It is a fair comparison in my estimation. Carlos Zambrano is killing Andy. His .366 average would be good enough to lead the Indians running away. Zambrano also has 1 more home run than Victor Martinez for that matter. The one that really gets me is Santana. Here is a guy that just came over from the American League. If he was hitless so far you wouldn’t blame him. His .192 average isn’t good, but hey he’s no Andy Marte! Like Andy, Santana is homer-less, but 4 of Santana’s 5 hits are doubles! That’s good enough for a .346 slugging percentage- Marte’s? Try .175. Ugh.

    Bruce Drennan? Really?

I watched All Bets Are Off last week when he had Windhorst on the show. I’m not sure which part I liked better, when Drennan wanted to talk about the free agents the Cavs should sign (like Elton Brand), and Brian had to correct him that the Cavaliers have no money to sign anyone, or when Drennan was talking about the Cavs needing to re-sign Joe Smith (something he’s been saying for a few weeks now), and Brian had to correct him that Joe Smith is still under contract for another season.

Bruce is good at what he does, and he gets really good guests on his show, but man is he sloppy with facts and figures and details.

On topic, though, I love posts like these. It’s truly amazing just how bad the Indians are this year. Check out Pronk Needs You in the blogroll…..he has some funny stats about how good the Indians are with Marte in the lineup. Good stuff all around.

What were you doing in Dayton?

Dragons have a nice field don’t they?

Watching the game of course. A friend had an extra ticket, so I rode with him for an hour and a half to see a very nice stadium indeed. The only real problem I had with the stadium was the foghorn, which we were unfortunately standing under when a Dragon hit a home run. I thought my ears were going to bleed…
