The Buckeyes are the Anti-Browns

Terrelle Pryor - Ohio St Michigan St FootballAny chance that the NCAA institutes a mandatory four-year rule for college football players?  If not, the Ohio State Buckeyes could be in some trouble in the not-so-distant future given the recent news of Nick Montana choosing the recently win-less Washington Huskies over Jim Tressel and the Bucks.

Corey over at Eleven Warriors called this decision “a bit concerning.”  For now, I’ll choose to use my Terrell Pryor blinders and just think of the next year or two.  But after that, the quarterback situation in Columbus may not be too pretty.

Sure, our 2009 draft class was given the thumbs up by many of the pundits.  However, the issues have also been well-documented, predominantly in the QB department.  The Buckeyes were hard after Taj Boyd following the Lane Kiffin situation in Tennessee, but he did a little shake and bake before choosing Clemson.  Then it was Austin Boucher who chose the Miami Redhawks over the Buckeyes to play on the same team with his brother, as well as get more playing time this coming season.

As Brian Cook happily points out, our only addition to the quarterback ranks this year is Kenny Guiton, who selected the Buckeyes over his other offers from schools like Rice and Prairie View.  Scoreboard.

Whether it’s the presence of Pryor or the fact that Ohio State quarterbacks do not typically wind up as Pro Bowl passers at the next level can be debated.

Looking beyond 2009, the Scarlet and Gray have a few in-state quarterbacks that they have their eye on for the next few years.  But given the fact that the team has been unable to add to the depth chart for this coming season, they may be in a huge rut if anything (gulp) were to happen to Pryor.

It makes you wonder if a quarterback controversy is really a bad thing to have…

I think this makes OSU a prime destination for a transfer looking for more PT over the next couple of years. You are correct however that if Pryor gets hurt this year, they are in bad shape.

The Buckeyes have always had issues at QB, so I can’t say I’m worried about the lack of depth at the position. They won a National Title with Craig Krenzel. They nearly won another with Todd Boeckman. They had a guy who was brought in to play defensive back as their QB (Steve Bellasari) and they were one of the best teams in the land in 1996 with the duo of Stanley Jackson and Joe Germaine. And that’s just in the last 15 years. Frankly, I’m glad Nick Montana isn’t coming to town. Big time QB recruits don’t always pan out, especially when there is a ton of pressure on them (Ron Paulus and Justin Zwick, I’m looking at you).

    MadCow,

I would not exactly put Powlus and Zwick together. Before BQ came along, Powlus held most of ND’s passing records. Now he never won his 4 Heismans like Beno said he would, but he was not nearly the bust Zwick was.

The Buckeyes are the anti-Browns in the sense that they have head coaching stability. And they win football games.
