Who were the Cavs bidding against here?

wow – retarded. far too much dough.

well that’s about 8 mil more total than I would have hoped … but at least he’s signed

Good signing. I mean he was going to get paid. And, we weren’t going to sign him to any deal had we tried to play hard ball with him. Then we would’ve had to give Dyss 3 years or go after Drew Gooden, think about how scary THAT would have been.

Wow Nicko is right. Andy wasnt even getting offers what what’s been said around the leauge. I thought Ferry was a much better negotiator than that. He is now makeing his ppg in millions: 8.3.
Is there anyway possible this turns into a sign and trade??? I know that it won’t, but this is the worst deal of the offseason IMO. This dude is getting more than Artest, Ariza, CV, McDyess, Gortat! He is a good role player and great 6th man but in this market that is a stupid deal. with the salary cap going to be around 50 mil on 10-11 this hurts.

“Fegan said several teams were willing to offer Varejao contracts that averaged $10 million per season.”

    Cleveland.com

I wish the Cavs would have called that bluff. And if it’s true, well, then they should have let that awful contract become someone else’s problem.

  • 7. July 8, 2009

*sigh* okay, so we got Parker and Varajao. Fine. So be it. Coulda done worse, but coulda done a lot better….

Cavs in Free Agency = FAIL

Fegan is gonna be laughing all the way to the bank…

  • 9. July 8, 2009

Who was paying Anderson Varejao 10 million a year? Who?!?! Charlie V. only got himself about 7 and he puts up 16 & 6 and is only 24. I mean I love Andy but you gotta be getting more offensive production for 8 mill.

    10. July 8, 2009

Well $50 mil might not be entirely accurate, and it might really be a five year deal (with a team option). Lets hope so.

I’m with rockking on this one. I don’t think Fegan was being honest though. We all know he’s shady anyway (what agent isn’t) I like having him on the team but this money situation just doesn’t look like a smart move to me.

So before when he was supposed to get 10 everyone didn’t want that and said a max of 8 would be good for both sides. NOW, he has 8 and all the sudden this is a terrible deal? That just doesn’t make sense to me

  • eshaw
    13. July 8, 2009

S-Dub: It made sense before because of the maket before all the other players were being signed. This signing is telling me that he is more valuable to a team than Artest, CVill (that’s debatable) McDyess (he’s old but still better IMO) Ariza. Esp with the cap being cut by around 8 mil for 10-11 this is not that gread of a deal. He’s worth no more than 6.5 mil a yr

ESPN says it’s 6 years $42M, and the 6th year is only partially guaranteed. Incentives can push it to $50. That seems more reasonable to me, depending on the incentives.

Dude this is awful. Andy didn’t produce when they didn’t have anybody to clog the middle offensively. Now with shaq in the middle look for him to average like 4 points per game. They need a good mid range shooter which can make a good entry pass to shaq or hit the mid range jump shot which will benefit shaq and LBJ. Does anybody know if Parker will get the mle?

  • Fursdon
    16. July 9, 2009

shaqFan: according to espn, he’ll get ‘a portion’ of the mle. I would guess 3-4 mill range, but have no idea.

I understand the disappointment but I like this way more than most people. The years will work out fine, he is still young and when the contract runs out we just get rid of him. May have overpaid in dollars but he does so much for this team that nobody else does, namely defend the pick and roll. We needed to keep him, and its structured in a way to help us keep some cap space in 2010 so I like it even more

Anybody who believes that foolishness about Varejao’s agent once demanded $10 million a year is just that, a fool. Just Ferry spreading more lies through his suckers in the local media.

This contract stinks. Another 50-year deal for a gazillion dollars. Right after signing Gibson’s to a 40-year deal worth a trillion dollars. I can’t wait until 2011, when the dumber fans are screaming about they need to get somebody, but they can’t because they have no space. It’s deja vous all over again.

This guy Ferry makes former GM Kevin McHale and current GM Chris Wallace look like Plato and Aristotle.

Oh, also, can we stop with the rampant stupidity that somebody is “young.” WHO CARES? Pavlovic is “young,” too. Even younger than Varejao. SO WHAT?

My dog is “young.” Come to think of it, my dog also brings “energy.” Give him $50 million.

Daveh, you should lose your ticket to post here (or anywhere for that matter) for this line.

I have never seen so much negativity on WFNY before. Guess the late night crowd is different than the daytime crowd.

Agreed Swig. Until you know the inner workings of the GM’s office and the salary cap rules (like Macphisto does from another site) you should not be quick to judge Ferry.

Give specific examples of who Ferry should have gotten and make sure it fits in the salary cap and I’ll listen to your argument. Anything less than that, it’s OK if you don’t like the deal, but don’t hate Ferry for trying to put the best team together that he can.

  • 23. July 9, 2009

@ # 22 – I’m guessing the inner workings involve walls, pipes, lights, maybe even some desks.

  • 24. July 9, 2009

[...] in all of the Anderson Varejao/Anthony Parker news from late last night is Brian Windhorst’s report about which Cavaliers [...]

Denny, I’m thinking no desks, but One big board room table. nicely played, though.

    26. July 9, 2009

I look at this team and I do not see a championship team. Maybe they make it to the Finals. But the Lakers will just own them. We paid way too much for a guy that is offensively challenged. All those big free agents Ferry was supposedly in talks with are now gone. Great just great.
