NBA Free Agency: Cavs to Work Out Sean May

According to the ESPN rumor mill, the Cavs are one of four teams that will be working out former Charlotte Bobcat Sean May this week.  May, a 25 year-old power forward was not made a qualifying offer by the his former team.

Most recently, in an injury-plagued young career, May made just over $2.6 million.  Over his career spanning three seasons, May has played in 82 games total.  He certainly hasn’t lived up to his draft status after being selected after his junior year at #13 by Charlotte.  Then again, it isn’t an easy task coming back from micro-fracture surgery.

I would guess that May will be one of a few options left at the end of the off-season for the Cavs to fill a bench vacancy at PF.  While he might not be the most exciting pickup, it would be intriguing anyway.  Call it me being a homer or overly optimistic, but if a guy is healthy, I just have to think his best chance to flourish is on a team like the Cavaliers where LeBron tends to make his teammates better.

If nobody has to pay attention to Sean May, it is quite possible that his soft touch shooting the basketball at UNC could return.  You would also have to think with the focus and intensity that LeBron shows that May might finally gain a work ethic that can keep him in better playing shape, which is another longtime knock on the big man.

I have probably already spent too many words on this.  If the Cavs end up signing him it will be for low dollars on a “show-me” basis, I am sure.

I’d like it. Another big body (aka 6 fouls) to use in the playoffs.

What about Ike Diogu as a minimum salary pickup at PF. In limited minutes, he put up great numbers (career average of 22 & 10 per 40 mins), is the same age as May (only 25), would be cheaper, has had fewer injuries, and would fit next to Z as a tough post presence.

Am I completely off base here?

This is the kind of creative thinking that could pay off.

He’s Tractor Traylor without the clever nickname.

    No.

  • 7. July 14, 2009

That’s an insult to Robert Traylor.

What is it about getting paid millions of dollars a year to play a game for a living that fails to inspire a guy to stay in shape? These things just don’t make sense to me.

Never even heard of this dude.

Wouldn’t mind him if it was on the cheap.

If we pay this guy anymore than the minimum, we’re crazy. He’s never had the motivation to stay in shape, tying up money and years with him would be a mistake.

he’s talented he has proven it at UNC and a little at the NBA level(he had some nice games). But his career has been a disaster so far because of injuries(mainly). Signing him would be a bet…and as that it could pay off. However a player like ike diogu would be a safer bet…and as that the reward wouldn’t be as great…

I too would prefer a guy like Diogu.

May doesn’t have the kind of commitment to defense that will let him sniff the floor in our system

  • 14. July 14, 2009

I’d prefer Ike Diogu or “The Landlord” Shelden Williams

    From Windy’s Twitter:

” I’ll have more on that plus a free agent they are chasing that no one has talked about yet later”

I wonder who that could be?

    Backup pg? PF?

    Marquis Daniels?
    Chris Wilcox?
    Ike Digou?
    Jamario Moon?

daniels would be a good pickup. he avgd 14 and 5 this past season and this came during important parts of the game instead of the garbage time digou played in…

we can probably get him and may with what’s left…

SnT, Daniels is a SG who shoots 20% from 3. Horrible match in our system:

“Lebron drives, dishes to an open Daniels for 3…..another air-ball for Daniels”

I would go for Drew Gooden with the Rest of our MLE and Matt Barnes with our Bi-Annual.

I do like Ike Digou…..and what about Hakim Warrik?

  • 22. July 14, 2009

Lebron James would be opt to murder Drew Gooden if he played another season with him. I think that’s the only teammate that Lebron has had in the pros he actively hated.

agree with Doc…no wayy in hell would the cavs sign gooden back because lebron hates him so much. gooden started the whole thing with lebron and deshaun stevenson because gooden went behind lebrons back once he was traded which started the whole “lebrons overrated thing”. remember gooden and stevenson are good friends and had that beard competition.

just a thought- how about tim thomas who was just bought out by the bulls. hes a big versatile player and hes 6’10, can shot the 3/jumper but doesnt play the greatest D. with thomas it seems he needs to be motivated and on a contending team to play well

    @7… You’re right, I’m sorry.

May is more like a tall McGuire twin.

Per Windy the FA nobody’s talked about is Rob Kurz…I have no problem with this, you know it’ll be cheap.

Meanwhile, Vic the Stick get’s an intentional walk in the All-Star Game. Garbage.

  • eshaw
    26. July 14, 2009

Yea that’s lame by Charlie to walk VMart in an ALL STAR GAME! O well AL wins as usual. Kurz is ok for the leauge minimum. Diogu is a name that everyone keeps bringing up that would be a goop player for the Cavs… doesn’t seem like they have been interested in him though. May is only a last, very last, resort IMO. He has no work ethic and needs to show he can consistantly stay healthy and in shape: Tractor Trailor with less athleticism. Linas Kleiza is still on the market as well. If they want a shooter and will spend a little more money than on Kurz, He’s the guy. He can also take it to the hoop decently and is much more athletic than Kurz.

sign may and marbury, then trade those guys to toronto for bosh and a draft pick(or cash) championship, baby!

Ironically, May was the guy the Bobcats drafted with the pick the Cavs traded to them to get Sasha Pavlovic.

    uhhhhmmmmm…….what about resigning Sasha?
