While We’re Waiting… Pick-Up with LeBron, Signing Danny Green, and Romeo Redux

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Forget for a moment all the joy, excitement, and delirious “Is this really happening!?!” swellings you would fell if you got to step on the court with LeBron [James]. Forget that you would immediately call all your friends afterwards and tell them what you just did. Forget that everything that ever happens in your life afterwards would be a unquestionable disappointment.

What if you hurt LeBron? Is it permissible to poke him in the stomach when he goes up for a jumpshot like you do to your friends during pick-up games?

These are all things I considered after getting a chance to run in a scrimmage against the reigning NBA MVP a couple of weeks ago. [Vince G/'64 and Counting]

Mary Schmitt Boyer reports that the Cavaliers are close to signing second-round draft choice Danny Green, according to a league source. His contract is believed to be two years for $1.2 million.  Given that, I recently had a chance to talk UNC/Cavs hoops with The 5th Corner, and Green was obviously one of the choice topics. [AEM/The 5th Corner]

Something tells me that the Moeller family doesn’t think this was so simple: “The Dispatch tracked down the guy that was booked for assaulting Tyler Moeller: According to police and court reports, Moeller was punched by Ralph G. Decker at Gators Cafe & Saloon in Treasure Island, Fla., early in the morning of July 26. […] Decker, 27, of Kenneth City, Fla., was arrested at 12:20 a.m. and charged with simple battery — a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.” [Columbus Dispatch via Eleven Warriors]

“The Indians have been very straightforward about how they approach signability.  For each potential pick, they make their own internal, independent evaluation of how much of a bonus that amateur prospect is really worth to the club.  Next, they talk to each player they think they might pick and get a sense of how much he expects to get.  Finally, if a player wants more than the club thinks he’s worth … he drops off the Indians draft board.  Simple.  So regardless of slot, unless the Indians dramatically misunderstood Alex White’s expectations, they were always going to sign him.  If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have drafted him.” [Jay/Lets Go Tribe]

“While clearly evidence of coachspeak, Eric Mangini’s comments strike echoes of Romeo Crennel. Much like the offensive and defensive schemes run by the Browns on Saturday night, Mangini probably couldn’t have offered a more vanilla response to the traditional problems that have plagued the Browns franchise for years.  As much as Mangini wants to change the culture in Berea, he is unfortunately inheriting a team that is littered with the remains of the Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel era.” [Cleveland Reboot]

At the end of that Moeller piece, a line is thrown in there that the charge against the guy could be upgraded to a felony due to the severity of Moeller’s injuries. I think he buried the lead on that one. Anyway, the kid was in SEC country and probably rocking OSU gear. I’m sure word got around that he was an OSU player and this guy took it upon himself to deck (see what I did there) him. Maybe there was some back and forth before that but I’m sure him being an OSU player is at the heart of the assault.

or moeller was acting like a cocky football player in a small time bar. I went to school in the SEC and people are nice down there, they don’t just go up and hit someone for no reason because they’re from Ohio State. Little pretentious to think that someones choice of school was the sole reason they got hit in the face.

The damage Crennel did to this team becomes more apparent everyday…every practice.
Evidenced by the old guards lackadasical attitude and pathetic work ethic.
The only players that consistantly give a complete effort are the Jets players Mangini brought with him.

ya, just because he was a football player he must have been cocky. and every person in the south is nice.

not saying he deserved to be punched or not, but you are ridiculous.

let the legal system take its course to see what actually happened.

Creative, I would be careful on speaking on an entire region’s behalf…..certainly, by and large “they” do not go hit someone, but all it takes is one drunken idiot to do something. Pretty tough to generalize an entire culture. We all know SEC folks are the kindest, mildest mannered folks out there……I could never see someone from LSU or Arkansas or Florida committing a violent crime!! riiiight.

lol @ “im ridicilous”… I just highly doubt the kid was sitting with his family minding his own business and a “drunken sec fan” walked up to him, recognized he was the starting line backer at osu and just cold cocked him. I’m sure there was some banter betwene the two prior to the incident.

and yes i generally think its agreed that division 1 football players can be classified as cocky, whether deserved or not.

I would never imagine that someone from Ohio would poop in a cooler, but lo and behold – these things happen.

I just knew the Moeller incident had to have gone down at Gator’s. Having been there (thankfully not in OSU colors–it was bad enough when the bartender saw the OSU bottle opener on my keychain–in her words, “Wow, did you come to the wrong place!”) and dealt with the “quality” of patron they attract, it’s no surprise. First of all, it is far from a “small time bar”–multiple floors of bars, huge waterfront deck (check out an outside view http://www.gatorscafe.com/)–this was not walking into some dive bar on the side of the road somewhere. It was actually a pretty good time until you’re having a beer dumped on you for having a casual conversation with a friend about OSU’s prospects for the upcoming season. And then the females you are with start getting called every name in the book. And then security, watching this all go down, decides to toss you out for sticking up for said females. At least the doorman was kind enough to say, “Stay the f— out, Suckeyes” as we left. I’m completely baffled as to how Moeller ended up getting hurt with such classy folks around.

I understand that it’s unfair to label an entire fanbase as being one way or another, but in 5 years here in Florida I have met at best a handful of reasonable, non d-bag UF fans (though, to be fair, they have only had fans for about 4 years, so maybe I’m being unreasonable in my expectations), and most of them are older colleagues of mine. Maybe it’s “pretentious to think that someones choice of school was the sole reason they got hit in the face”, but that doesn’t make it impossible.

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS RANDOM ACT OF VIOLENCE HAPPENED, EVERYBODY EVERYWHERE WORSHIPS OHIO STATE FOOTBALL.

There was a reason Romeo was 58 years old before he became a head coach. Unfortunately, Randy was fooled by the Patriots success (99.9% Belichick, .1% Romeo).

ya he might be a cocky sob. but then again, he might not be. like i said, he may have deserved to got clocked in the face but you just cant make that assumption. i just find it hard to believe that this kid was being a prick and talking enough trash to get his ass kicked while he was sitting at dinner with his entire family.

and if you are going to jack someone in the face, do it while you are confronting them. to jack them from behind when they werent expecting is very weak sauce. i have no problem with a little violence every once in a while. just let the person try and defend themself because otherwise you just look like a huge puss.
