Thoughts On Carson Palmer, Buckeyes
By now, you have likely heard about the recent radio interview with Carson Palmer in which he discussed his “hate” for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The audio can be found here, but if you do not have the time to listen, NCAA FanHouse breaks down a few quotes.
I cannot stand the Buckeyes.
It’s amazing to hear what those guys think about that university and what they think about that football program and Tressel and all the crap I gotta put up with being back there.
I just can’t wait for two years from now when SC comes to the ‘Shoe and hopefully we’ll have a home game that weekend and I can go up there and watch us pound on them in their own turf.
First, I find it incredibly convenient that Palmer chose to spout off on an LA radio show, as opposed to one in Cincinnati. You know, the town in which his team resides? Given that Palmer has, what, one winning season in the state of Ohio, you would think that he would have a little more of an understanding of the way things work in Columbus.
I also find it funny that he “can’t wait” for the game in two years. You know, the one that will be against a Buckeye team that will see about 80 percent of this season’s starters graduate and/or leave for the NFL. The Buckeyes have set all kinds of draft-based records on players being selected to the next level, so it seems that they’re doing something right.
Buckeye fans can at least be happy about the fact that Mr. Palmer has given an entire state some bulletin board material for the next football season. Something tells me that even Browns fans will use this one to build up a little more animosity against the black and orange and incarcerated. Thanks, Carson!

All of the sudden, I am a huge Carson Palmer fan!
July 21st, 2008 at 12:22 pm
To be fair, our fan base is obnoxious to the rest of the country.
Cincinnati doesn’t care a whole lot about tOSU, and they’re basically a part of Kentucky anyway. So I’ll just take this with a grain of salt.
July 21st, 2008 at 12:47 pm
OSU fans are extreeemely obnoxious, thats one of the reasons why everyone hates us. Although I don’t know why Carson hates OSU, did he even play OSU while he was at USC? No, he didn’t. So I don’t know what his deal is. If he went to Michigan or something that would be understandable. Maybe he isn’t used to fans really caring about their team
July 21st, 2008 at 1:01 pm
It sounds like a lot of his displeasure is from “hearing” about tOSU all of the time while in Cincy…
July 21st, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Yeah, we can make all kinds of excuses for Palmer….but Braylon Edwards has a hundred more reasons to blast OSU fans in the media than Carson Palmer does…..but Braylon doesn’t. I think Braylon understands a passionate fan base a lot more than Carson Palmer does. Although, what can you expect from a guy who went to USC and now plays in Cincy? Passionate fans is definitely a culture shock for Carson.
July 21st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Oh, good to have you back Scott. We missed these kind of posts last week.
July 21st, 2008 at 1:15 pm
…and by these kinds of posts we mean posts we didn’t have to write!
July 21st, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Gotta agree with Rock. I haven’t heard Winslow spout off about the u coming to Columbus, and he has a real reason to hate tOSU. I’ve been to LA plenty of times over the last 20 years, and until USC started winning in recent years there wasn’t a single USC fan to be found walking the streets. I guess Carson’s just used to bandwagon fans with little love for their team.
My OSU alum friend from Cincinnati burned his Palmer jersey last night. Buckeye fans aren’t obnoxious, they’re zealous.
July 21st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
@ DCBucks: But you don’t agree that it’s good to have me back?
July 21st, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I didn’t want to out my man crush for you;)
July 21st, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Interesting, but I’m sure Carson was just stirring up the mud for his LA homeboys; he was on a local LA show co-hosted by another former USC football player (Petros Padadakis of “Pros VS. Joes” infamy). He may even really feel that way, but I think he was trying to drum up some interest for the game at USC in Sept., as USC is probably going to be a home dog. All the same, I wouldn’t mind seeing some former Buckeye (Simon Fraser of the Browns comes immediately to mind) rattle his chiclets this season.
July 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Any chance Tyler Whaley says anything to Palmer? Being a rookie, probably not. But being 250 lbs…
July 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Vegas already has the Bucks as dogs. It could be by as much as a touchdown come kickoff.
July 21st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
thats about the worst hot dog advertisement of all time.
July 21st, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Carson is going to find there are a more than a few Bengal/OSU fans.
As a Steeler fan suddenly I truly miss Kimo von Oelhoffen but look for many more chances to see the Steelers beat Carson and the Bungles.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I seem to recall some team from Texas with a Vince Young going to southern California and winning a few years ago vs USC. Oh yea that team was called the Texas Longhorns!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 am
As an Ohio State alum and a lifelong Buckeye fan, I really couldn’t care less about these comments. In fact, I think OSU fans are going a long way in proving Palmer right by the way they react to his comments. Who the hell cares what the quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals thinks about Ohio State? Who cares what he says about them? Palmer never won an NCAA title and he sure as hell is never winning a Super Bowl, so what gives?
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
So by your reasoning Amar, if someone calls your mother a whore you won’t call him out on it?
By the way, I like your Cavs blog.
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:12 am
OK, I wonder if Carson will lead the Bengals to a 7 and 9 record again? he has had 1 winning season and two 8 an 8 seasons. As a Bungal fan this is enough for me to hate the Bungals, I think I will jump on a ban wagon somewhere like the STEELERS! I hope someone hits him hard and I hope a Buckeye knocks his sorry azz out! Anyone want a 2xl Palmer jersey??????
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 am
Why do you guys keep trying to make some correlation between his nfl record and him not liking ohio state?? The fact that he went to usc and he lives in ohio is why he hates osu. and he did say he was looking forward to this years game as well as next years game. pay attention bucks, i know that its hard but please try to.
GO BLUE BABY!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:07 pm
@ goblue – What does him playing at USC have to do with the Bucks? As formerly pointed out, he’s never played against them. Also, let’s see where you’re at after Dick Rod buries the Maize and Blue program within a couple years.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Carson plays in Cincy, and played for USC. Untill 5 years ago nobody cared about EITHER team. He has no clue what true fans are, only what it means to be the flavor of the week. In a couple more years (or sooner, depending on how long ocho-cinco stays around), Palmer will be a footnote in Ohio football history.
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm
You know I am a OSU fan and a Cincy fan well was a Cincy fan. I watched every game last season and was with the rest of the Cincy fans rooting for them when they played the Browns. It is a shame that he couldnt keep his opions to him self. You hate us well that is all on you, but well the fact of it is that you play in the state of Ohio. You dont like where you play please oh please find another job. That is the problem you may not live here but you play here not only that but you will have future players from Ohio State joining your team and hopefully taking your job one day (soon) and you just dont talk bad about a fan base that is going to follow with each buckeye. Are we obnoxious yes but we support no matter what and that is what makes us the best damn fans in the land.
As to the Blue fans on here.. Isn’t it funny you have anything to say at all didnt your new coach desert all of his players before the season was over?? Yeah, great man of honor you got there!! well see…….
July 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
He didnt tell the fans of the bengals to go to hell. He said the ohio state fans annoy him. So he didn’t alienate anybody in my opinion. He just stood by his school and hopes they beat the local boys so he can have something to shut them up. That is no different than my situation (and many others). I live in atlanta, and wish nothing more than for every big 10 team (ahem ohio state please step up to the plate just once!) to beat every sec team they play just so i can tell all the loud mouth sec fans around here to shut it up!
and thats what makes college football great!

BINGO.

• Lewis said when he met the media before the annual training camp luncheon at Paul Brown Stadium. “You have to be a productive part to be a NFL player. There is a responsibility to be a NFL player. It’s a privilege, not a right.”
o All talk – no accountability by Bengal’s players and staff
• Bengals president Mike Brown, in his only scheduled media appearance of the season, said he hopes the club has turned the corner on the character issue.
o No they haven’t! This seems to be a annual statement or after every arrest.
• Carson Palmer’s comment about OSU and his weak response when called to defend his clarification statement is unacceptable.
o “I don’t watch what I say. . . . I cannot stand the Buckeyes, and having to live in Ohio and hear those people talk about their team, it drives me absolutely nuts.
“It’s amazing to hear what those guys think about that university and that football program and (coach Jim) Tressel and all the crap I’ve got to put up with being back there.
“I just can’t wait for two years from now (actually 2009) when SC comes to the ‘Shoe. Hopefully, we’ll have a home game that weekend and I go up there and watch us pound on them on their own turf and put all the talk to rest, because I’m really getting sick of it.
“I just can’t wait for this game to get here, so they can come out to the Coliseum and experience L.A. and get an old fashioned Pac-10 butt-whipping and go back to the Big Ten. I can’t wait.”
• OSU took USC and O.J. (“The Slashing Runner”) to task when I last attended the Rose Bowl!
• ALL THE CRAP statement shows how little respect / commitment he has – let L.A and California pay his inflated salary!
o In response to his comments last Thursday to a Los Angeles-based sports radio station about the Ohio State football program, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer has issued the following statement:
“I’m a Trojan all the way, and I was talking to a Trojan audience in California. I guess I got a little fired up, as all good fans will do. But I really do respect the Buckeyes, and I know their fans are passionate, too. I hope they all understand I’m just looking forward to a big game for my school against a very tough opponent, and that it’s all in the good fun of a rivalry. You don’t have a real rivalry unless both sides are great teams.”
• Is he only talking to the OSU audience in Ohio?
• Is he a good fan? He is showing the same level of contempt as he bring charges against the OSU (players and staff) and their fans!
• Do we all (OSU fans) understand? I don’t Carson Palmer understands who pays his salary and supported him in the past!
• As for the Mike Brown’s statement that “I don’t think anyone takes it seriously. If they do, they shouldn’t. Just having fun.” Mike is trying to make light of a bad P.R. situation.
o You are wrong Mike Brown, people took Carson Palmer’s statement seriously. I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting and knowing Mike’s father, Paul Brown when I lived in Ohio. Paul would of never put up with or allowed such actions by his players or staff.
o The Carson Palmer’s radio interview sure didn’t sound that he was joking around.
The Bengals have a deep/deep character flaws and will not or cannot choose to address the issues.
If I were a blocker, I would remind Palmer that his USC Trojans aren’t protecting him now. He is supposed to be a Bengal.
As a supposed leader, his actions are constantly put under a microscope (like it or not) and evaluated!
Carson Palmer desires people like Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh and their work commitment.
The Bengal’s are a group/mob of dysfunctional so called football players that are overpaid! If they were paid for performance, they would be paying the people to watch them play!
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Hey Carson — you idiot! You live in Cincinnati NOT SOUTHERN CAL. Try focussing your energy on getting your teammates out of jail!
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 am
Go back to Cali!!! The Buckeyes could beat the Bengals.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:47 am
Cincinnati fans are the worst…. They do that horrible chant that makes them sound like they’re cheering for their 10 year old kids team. Didn’t they steal that stupid chant from New Orleans anyway. Shoulda stole a better chant, idiots. Go Buckeyes!
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:11 pm
ok,the who dey chant is really stupid, but who the hell are buckeye fans to say anything about annoying chants? o-h-i-o? THATS THE WORST ONE OF ALL! USC will destroy the suckeyes this fall
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
I plan to throw out all of our Carson attire! I lost all respect for Palmer after this.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Oh brother…
DCBucks-
Thanks for the kind words for Cavalier Attitude – I appreciate them. But comparing the person who kept you in her tummy for nine long months and then labored to push you out of her vagina to the college football team of your alma mater is a bit of a stretch, no?
For the record, I’ve always hated Palmer just because he’s a stuckup ass who thinks he’s far better than he is. Dude thinks he’s a Peyton Manning equal if you listen to him. The comments about the Buckeyes really can’t change how I feel about him.
Maybe I’d feel differently if it was, say, Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn who said that. I just don’t care for Carson Palmer.
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Biscuit – USC…. lol – Chris Wells will win Heisman and who is this Pryor guy. Bengals fans are like USC fans. Bengals are a bunch of money hungry rich bi-tches. Palmer… Chad Johnson… do I have to say anything. Even their stupid uniforms look like something a bitch would wear. I’m a Bears fan that lives in Ohio but if I was to root for an ohio team it would be brown not bright orange.

I would just like to say … GO CARSON GO….. but in reality what do you expect him to say – he was in LA, he is a USC grad, he is an OHIO implant not of his own choosing, he is of course going to be loyal to his team. I am a BIG BLUE fan that lives in Ohio and a CHICAGO BEARS fan that lives in Ohio. That is one of the great things about this country – you can live anywhere in it and express your opinion and you do not have to like the home town school or the home state school JUST BECAUSE it is there ….. give Carson a break he is entitled to his opinion the same as everyone else
July 30th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Many of the responses left here show why so many people hate OSU and their fans. Palmer is a USC alum and loves his team. He spoke as a fan. As a rabid Buckeye fan from way back ( I remember my Bucks winning the 68 National Championship), if asked about USC I would probably respond the same way that Palmer did. His clarification afterwards says it all. He got fired up. That’s what being a fan is all about. He is just a bit more in the spotlight than the rest of us. I hope the Bucks kick USC’s rear ends all over the field in Sept, but I’m not going to lose sleep because a USC fan is rooting for his team.
