Sunday With the Ex’s
August 31, 2009AFC North Pre-Season Week 3
August 31, 2009With the NFL preseason wrapping up, the next step as we head into the regular season comes with roster cuts. As the Browns look to reduce their roster to 75 players by tomorrow, they have announced their first wave up cuts.
A surprising name on said list is cornerback Roderick Hood, who the Browns just signed this offseason to help bolster the defensive backfield. The 27-year old Hood was thought to be competing for a starting spot on the Browns and was recently touted as an upgrade over last season. Unfortunately, he has gone from starting in the Super Bowl to having a fairly bad preseason ultimately resulting in his release.
The cornerback position currently rosters Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald, Hank Poteat, Corey Ivy and Coye Francies. Not exactly an intimidating bunch, but still better than one that features Terry Cousin. Stay tuned for other cuts as there are bound to be a few more surprises.

By what percentage did this release damage Denny’s joke writing for this season? Discuss…
I’m really surprised it was Hood and not Corey Ivy. Outside of Wright, McDonald, and Elam, the secondary really scares me.
I think the real name that ensured Hood would not make the team is Francies… I am guessing that if Francies doesn’t show he can play as a late draft rook that the Browns end up keeping someone like Hood. Then again, it is all just guessing.
agreed craig. 100% agreed.
A #2
At first glance I agree Ivy over Hood would be the right release but watching the Titans game Hood seemed be the guy covering every time a pass was completed…Ivy has had some costly penalties….but he’s also made a play or two something Hood never did. Penalties you can fix…I think
Hood was terrible in that titans game. They kept throwing at him on their second scoring drive and there wasn’t anything hood could do about it (he got torched in the corner for the TD). This is clearly a rebuilding year and at least Francies shows promise.
He probably did too much celebrating every time he held his man to a 15-yard gain.
“Not exactly an intimidating bunch, but still better than one that features Terry Cousin.”
I think this sentence definitely sums up our CB core.
I have been really disappointed in hood. I was hoping he could come in and challenge Mcdonald for a starting spot and ultimately push the younger CBs to become better. That obviously did not happen. Here’s hopin they found another decent CB in Francies.
I am terrified by our secondary. Yes, we need a better pass rush, but we ought to be able to at least force an incompletion or two. And if one of these guys goes down, where does that leave us? I think even a less-than-advertised Hood helps us more than an empty roster spot.
Well hood is presumably the 6th CB on the roster (having Wright, McD, Ivy, Poteat and Francies ahead of him). Hood also seemed to get beat an awful lot. It is scary if Wright or Mcdonald goes down at all this season.
Francies was always a lock to make the team, not only being a draft pick but after the embarrassing flub of the other drafted cornerback.
Forget about the corners……start conerning yourself with the safeties. With Poole likely done after his 5th concussion, you’ve got Mike Adams and Abe “Deep” Elam and who else? If you think Hood was getting beat, wait till you get a whiff of QB’s throwing over the top of Elam. A pass rush would help mask the secondary, but in Mangini’s vanilla 34 it’s not gonna happen.
Them Brownies done been circumcised.
Hood is terrible so I’m glad he’s gone, now if they’ll only release Ivy too.
Whatever happened to Daven Holly?
That Don Carey situation could end up haunting Mangini and Kokinis if he turns out to be a player in Jacksonville. I find it interesting that there would be unwritten rules to claiming players off of waivers, etc.
Someone asked Tony Grossi about Daven Holly. After tireless research he has said that “Holly hasn’t signed with another team.”
In other words he could have said “I don’t know.”
PD is reporting that Ryan Tucker has been released as well now that Hadnot is practicing again.
Isis- Its POOL (no E). And if you read anything, you could see he was at practice today.
say with confidence bobby………Brodney P. will play a full season. “he was at practice today”.
Since your are so up on practice, how many reps did Robiskie get with the first team?
@18: Leave Isis alone. He hasn’t done anything yet.
Gotta believe we are going to have an influx of new faces at all secondary positions, and maybe an old receiver, once other teams make their surprise cuts.
Isis, it will also depend on if we continue to run the “vanilla 3-4” in the regular season. One would assume they will not, but again… who knows?
Whoops, sorry #18. As you were.
cmon Harv, everyone knows certain people here have SO much more insight than anyone else here…they obviously know it all…you dont need to defend anyone…
that being said, I was disappointed in Hood, I am definitely encouraged by Pool coming back…if he can play, great, if not, Adams is a decent backup…
I highly doubt that the Browns have shown much of anything on O or D, but the fact that we have an OC that actually trusts his QBs to make the right reads and gives them the chance to audible is fantastic enough…Quinn definitely is the better out of the two in that regard…DA is more of a flag football QB…
I think I rather like the fact that Mangini doesnt tell anyone anything about anyone…it makes people wonder whats wrong and does not allow for gameplanning…for all you whiners that dont like it, I really kind of like it…
I cannot say anyone on the browns will be healthy for a full season. Its football, and just about everyone will have some sort of injury during the season. Pool is not likely out for the season though. Yes he was hurt, but he is back, and will probably be ready to start the season even though he probably wont play the last preseason game.
as to the ‘vanilla 34,’ the browns have shown a few different looks out of it after preseason week one. They have tried to blitz a lot more too, but without Rogers eating up linemen the LBs are getting blocked easier. Im not going to say that he will make this a top 10 D, but with Rogers the D should be pretty respectable, although I do agree, the entire secondary leaves me worried if they are alone too long.
Isis, if you’re so down on Pool because of his injury history how can you possibly be so excited about Beanie Wells as a prospect?
