Breaking: Delonte West Reportedly Arrested on Weapons Charge
Not the best news we want to hear on a Friday afternoon.
Per Brian Windhorst, Cavs guard Delonte West has reportedly been arrested in Washington D.C. on a weapons charge following a routine traffic stop.
Apparently, he had more than just hot sauce in his bag.
WUSA, a television station in Washington D.C., reported today that West was pulled over in Prince George’s County, Md., at 10 p.m. Thursday night for making an unsafe lane change on his motorcycle. The police say West had two handguns and a shotgun in his possession and he was arrested.
I’m sure we’ll have more on this as it develops…

Denny Edit 3:50 PM – thanks to awesome things like Twitter, people have flooded the interwebs with alleged photos from last night. You can find examples here, here, here, and here. Enjoy.

Update – 4:05PM: Per the WaPo, Delonte was in fact Desperado:
The officer pulled him over, and West told the officer that that he was carrying a handgun in his waistband.
That prompted the officer to call for back up, and investigators found that West was actually carrying three guns — a Beretta 9mm in his waistband, a Ruger .357 strapped to his leg and a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back, said Maj. Andy Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Perfect, thanks Delonte.
Can’t say that Im surprised though.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
He musta been pissed when LeBron cast him as the token white guy in his upcoming movie.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Makes me think of this.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Two handguns and a shotgun on a motorcycle?? Holy crap.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Damn he had two handguns and a shotgun with him on a motorcycle! Does Delonte think he’s in a Mad Max movie or something?
September 18th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I got this twitter update on my phone while in a meeting. I swore so hard that I had to pretend I banged my knee on the table.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
If you’ve ever been to PG county, you’d know why he was strapped like that.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I love being a Cleveland fan.
I love being a Cleveland fan.
I love being a Cleveland fan.
I love being a Cleveland fan.
I love being a Cleveland fan….

He was just PG Chillin’…

Somebody’s been playing a little too much GTA…
September 18th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Let’s go Jackets
September 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
This is what it might have looked like if he had a baby and some knives.
Times like these are what Twitter was made for. I’m on the verge of tears laughing.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
He had all of that with him on a motorcycle, really?
I wonder if this was after a KFC run.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
d’oh, I hoped I would be the first to make a KFC joke. Oh well, nevermind. Ya let me down there, Red.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Didnt I beat you both in the actual post?
September 18th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
At least Delonte was working on his game in the off season. He was focusing on his shooting.
What?
Too soon?
September 18th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Slight correction, it’s not “per Brian Windhorst,” it’s per WUSA. Major distinction.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
What is anticipated leage suspension?
T G this is not the NFL
September 18th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I hate to make jokes about the situation, but it was so stupid.
The only logical reason I can see him having that many weapons is that he was fighting crime in the D.C. area.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Rick says: “Ha. ha. I made a funny!”

September 18th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Wow….let’s hope this isn’t too serious in terms of infractions. We need the dude. My feeling is that he’s a good dude at heart, but somewhat of a street thug in upbringing and probably still has plenty of friends in that mode. Somebody gently needs to get to him before this gets ugly, remember he dealt with the depression issues last training camp. Don’t know anything more than I just read here, but I sure hope Delonte sorts his head out.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
I guess JJ better get Delonte his donuts STAT!
September 18th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
What was he gonna do if they dude at Taco Bell was out of hot sauce?
September 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
if the information i read is true, it’s 30 days incarceration for gun possession(1st-time offender), with steeper penalties for repeat offenses, in the state of maryland.
September 18th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
“a shotgun in the guitar case…” Has Delonte been watching “Desperado”?
September 18th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
thanks west i knew this season was going to well for a cleveland sports team… he better not be charged that hard cause the cavs need him for the season
September 18th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
anyone know if these guns were loaded or legally registered to him?
September 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Scott, yes you did. My bad.
September 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
I just don’t get it. I realize my upbringing in middle class suburban Ohio was probably a tad different than Delonte’s but is it that hard not to do stuff like this. I’m talking about all professional athletes here, I mean, come on. When you have an idea to do the stupidest stuff ever just don’t do it. Is it really that hard?
September 18th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Shotgun in a guitar case???
September 18th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Dr. Cleveland – I believe they were loaded. No word on the registration. Even then, I’m not sure that you’re allowed to carry a small arsenal with you on a motorcycle.
I think the big thing Cavs fans need to worry about here – aside from the possible suspension – is the depression issues that D West has battled. I hope this doesn’t push him over the edge…
September 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Yo, west. I’ll let you get back to your guns in a second because you’re doing a good job. But let me tell you about my boy Plaxico that dude did the best illegal gun carry of all time.

September 18th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
This has got to be a concerted effort by Mangini and Wedge to throw us off the rotten scent of mediocrity, right?
September 18th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
@ Scott, Ya… Guess I’m just trying to find glimmers of hope aka mitigating circumstances.
Regardless of the guns, is anyone else laughing hysterically at the thought of Redz riding a 3-wheeled motorcycle let alone carrying a guitar case with a shotty in it?
September 18th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
He Delonte, Maurice Clarett called and wants his modus operandi back.
September 18th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
If West wasn’t on the Cavs I’d be laughing… honestly I’m laughing anyway… but it really sucks basketball-wise.
September 18th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Delonte was just living up to his saying of “Snitches Get Stitches”
September 18th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
@ 34. nope, they know, “where I’m from snitches get stitches”
September 18th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
If the guns were registered the case will probably go away or he’ll pay a small fine.
It still makes him bat-shit crazy but at least, he’ll avoid jail time.
September 18th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Lost in all of this – he was on the BELTWAY. Every time I pass 3 o clock on the Beltway from now on Im’a think of D-West.
Fact: I don’t drive 3 o clock on the Beltway often, because of things like this.
September 18th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
If you haven’t already.. google Cam Am Spyder. This is sure to boost their sales.
September 18th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
the report says Delonte “cut off” a police cruiser? Was he actually trying to get stopped so that he couldn’t do whatever it was he was going to do with all those guns?
September 18th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Boy the 3 wheeler is just a cherry on top, no?
September 18th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Q: How do you get Delonte West to speed up on his motorcycle?
A: Ask him to gun it.
September 18th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Damn, this is the one state around these parts to not get caught with a gun. The Nazis in Maryland will crucify him. It should have happened in Virginia, we love our guns here, and this wouldn’t have even made the news. I really hope he has a concealed carry permit.
September 18th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Maybe this is Delonte’s way of keeping his street cred without actually popping a cap in someone’s ass.
September 18th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
I love the Shotgun in a guitar case! ROFFL!!! should be interesting to hear the reason.
September 18th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Road Rash…what a classic game..so what’s going to be the charges? Jail time?
September 19th, 2009 at 1:32 am
If it makes anyone feel better, JR Smith only got suspended for 7 games, and he was responsible for killing a person. Granted JR also went to jail for 30 days, but I’m sure that Delonte has lawyers that can prevent any potential jailtime from occurring until after the season
September 19th, 2009 at 5:49 am
Delonte.. c’mon man… use your head. How dumb can one be?
September 19th, 2009 at 5:53 am
HOLD ON!!!!! Maybe Delonte is one of those “gun totting” “teabaggers”… he’s just like 6 days late for the D.C. tea party… If he flew instead of drove he could have got there on time.
Defend your second amendment right Delonte. Keep on keeping on!
September 19th, 2009 at 8:41 am
What?!? 9mm in waistband + 357 on leg + shotgun in guitar case + riding a motorcycle = out of his mind.
September 19th, 2009 at 8:41 am
Like most, I’m sure, I can’t help but to think that the DETAILS of this story are freakin’ awesome – shotgun in the guitar case, and the sweetest bike I’ve ever seen. But the overall picture could not be more depressing for 2 reasons: 1) the human aspect of it – ‘Te suffers from depression and who knows where the hell he was going with those guns and what he was planning on doing with them, and 2) the selfish aspect – this was the ONLY thing that could have gone wrong before the season started, some stupid off-court crap. I realize the situations are different, but I can’t help but think of Plax, and boy would it be a hit to the team/season if he goes away for the year. Thankfully, as bad as this situation is, it appears it could have been a lot worse – he was cooperative with the police, and if he was going to off himself, he didn’t need to get on the bike and drive somewhere else to do it. One news station last night reported that jail time is “possible, but doubtful.” Let’s hope they’re right, and not just trying to ease our Clevelander hearts.
One other thing I was thinking about this morning in regards to this – does anyone but me think that Lebron probably has ZERO clue what’s going on with arguably the 2nd best player on last year’s team? I’m not saying he needs to be ‘Te’s big brother or anything to that extent, but if my #1 goal was a championship, I’d be checking in on the important piece to that puzzle that suffers from depression from time to time. While I admit I don’t know for sure what kind of contact he keeps with his teammates, Bron just seems so consumed with himself this offseason, and with training camp right around the corner, he needs to get back into team mode.
September 19th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Not good for the cavs but wonderful for comedy value. The shotgun in a guitar case is amaaaaaaazing
September 19th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I’m going to dig up the old genesis so I can get my Road Rash on. I surprised Delonte wasn’t whipping people with chains as he was cruising down the highway.
September 19th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Despardo is on HBO right now..
September 20th, 2009 at 12:41 am
keep making jokes folks, we are in a lot of trouble if he isnt at his best this season
October 5th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
not to defend west, but prince georges county MD has a reputation for corrupt policework.
