Larry Hughes Thinks LeBron’s Staying Put

Larry Hughes LeBron JamesDespite the LeBron James Countdown being proudly displayed on the sidebar, the New York Daily News’ latest James-related article is actually one that Cleveland fans may enjoy.  Frank Isola caught up with everyone’s favorite trade chip Larry Hughes to discuss his contact with James and to get his prediction on what No. 23 will due come July of 2010.

“He’s got a good opportunity to win there. And I know a lot of people talk about him playing in a big market, but he just wants to win a ring. It’s not about playing in a big market.”

Allegedly, Hughes is in constant contact with James.  He too will be a free agent in 2010, but obviously will not be among the first-called when it comes to additions by other squads.  Thoughts are that the off-guard may not get much of a shot to audition for other teams this season given New York’s logjam at the position.

The piece discussed the manner in which Hughes has fallen out of favor with fans over the past few seasons.  He is obviously not missed in Cleveland, was booed in his first game with the Chicago Bulls, and recently drew ire from Knicks fans after an 0-for-8 night against the Sixers in preseason play.

Hughes reportedly maintains that James is content with the direction of the Cleveland Cavaliers.  And as long as the Knicks keep tossing up seasons like they have over the past few years, James’ desire to win could push him further and further from Madison Square Garden.

It doesn’t take a loon like Larry Hughes to figure that Lebron is going nowhere. Relax, his extension will be signed next summer-book it.

Isis is exactly right. LeBron will not leave that much money on the table for the right to bust his butt for the 8th seed in NJ or NY. Wait a minute…we like Larry Hughes now???

Oh lord. That’s the worst news I heard all day.

You mean Larry’s not going to get another max contract?

He’ll be lucky to get the bi-annual exception.

I’m sure this quote will further endear him to Knicks fans.

I think I’ll only get worried if the Knicks are unable to unload Eddie Curry and/or Jared Jeffries to create enough salary cap space for two max players. Someone disconnect Grizzlies’ GM Chris Wallace’s phone. He’s the only moron who would trade for them (now that Isiah is gone).

Alrighty, have we had our “OMG Someone Somewhere Said He’s Staying/Going!!!” fix for the week?

It’s worth a look when it comes out of his or his agent’s mouth. Until then, nobody should be rocking back and forth, switching the lamp on and off. Please, let’s move on.

Obv. we’re all biased here, but I think anyone with half a brain can recognize how silly it’d be for James to go to NY.

That doesn’t meant there aren’t other big market places he could go (Miami, Chicago, LA, etc.), but both the Knicks and Nets are so terrible at this point, he would waste the best part of his career rebuilding instead of winning.

Chicago and LA don’t have enough cap room to sign him without making huge trades to pick up expiring’s and Miami would have to forgo trying to sign Wade to make a run at him, which obviously they’re not going to do.

@11 – Actually I think both the Bulls and Miami will be under the cap (even with Wade the Heat has enough cap room for another max player because Jermaine O’Neal’s huge contract is expiring).

As much as I hated Hughes during his time here, he wasn’t helped by the fact that the Cavs had no point guards worth a damn. A backcourt of Mo Williams and Hughes wouldn’t suck IMO. However, while he was way overpaid and his bball IQ is abysmal, his slashing, height and defense (esp. on Billups) helped the Cavs reach the Finals.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hughes and LeBron kept in contact

@Ben: Ya, then he proceeded to get injured and it took 33 points from Boobie to ACTUALLY clinch the series. He’s miserable and his shooting would’ve still killed us. Only Larry could have gotten hurt going into the finals and not be able to play against Tony Parker. I BLAME him for us losing because he was the only guard who would’ve been able to keep up with Parker and Manu.

It’s funny that they talk all the time because I always heard that Larry and LBJ didn’t really like each other, especially towards the end.
