Cavs News: Delonte West Involved in Domestic Incident

Written By:  TD   |  Category:  Cleveland Cavaliers   |  Comments:   21

dwestThe sordid offseason of Cavs Guard Delonte West allegedly took another turn Saturday evening. While it pains us to have to discuss this, 19 Action News has reported that West’s wife filed a domestic violence report against him. Per the 10 report:

The two reportedly fought at their apartment when Delonte tried to take her wedding ring off. Mrs. West left their home and headed to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, where she filed a domestic violence report.

Cleveland Police tell 19 Action News there were no signs of abuse or injury. Mrs. West then got on her flight and flew out of Cleveland.

West’s offseason issues have been well documented and the Cavaliers have done the smart thing by keeping most of what they can in-house. Delonte is extremely important to the success of the Cavs quest for their first NBA Championship, but at this point it is hard to know how much/if at all, they can count on the talented guard’s services.

Not only do we not know his status for tomorrow night’s opener with the Boston Celtics, but he is still potentially facing a league suspension for his weapons arrest this summer. This brings us to a potential addition to the roster.

Antonio+DanielsCombo guard Antonio Daniels.

The 34-year old veteran was bought out by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday and his $6.6 million contract will undoubtedly clear waivers. The Columbus native is 6′4, can play both guard spots, and seems like a natural fit to take Coby Karl’s roster spot. You may remember him most recently during the Cavs battles in the playoffs with the Washington Wizards, as a key piece to their rotation. Bob Finnan, longtime Cavs beat writer of the Morning Journal  has learned the Cavs have already been in contact with Daniels.

Daniels could be the veteran extra guard the Cavs have been looking for as insurance in case Delonte is unavailable. I emailed a few different NBA people that I know to get their take on Daniels. The responses ranged from “a good fit, but he isn’t what he used to be to “you realize that Antonio Daniels CANT play.. right? the next jump shot he makes will be the first… look at the teams that have discarded this guy.”

For the veterans minimum, I still think he is a much better guy to have on the roster than Karl, who more than likely will never be used.

Still hoping that Delonte can put it together. Not only for the team, but for himself.

31 hours until “Come On, Cavs!”

I would lock him in a padded room with an Xbox and only let him out for practice and games.

Anyone who’s been involved with bipolar knows that this is par for the course.

This is some serious self-destruction. I hope he comes out okay.

The plague that has infected the Browns and Indians’ seasons is spreading to the Cavs…

I’m with you David. Delonte is one of my favorite players, but I can’t root for a woman beater. Hope it’s not true.

Seriously, the Anthony Parker signing by Ferry is looking smarter and smarter by the day. I hope that Delonte can get things handled and under wraps, but it’ll need time.

Thanks for making a big fuss of an athlete’s personal life in search of citations and page hits, WOIO.

Delonte is not a “woman beater.” There is a difference between injuring someone physically and domestic abuse. While I don’t condone domestic abuse at all, I do understand that some things that may qualify as domestic abuse (such as pushing, grabbing, and threatening) do not lead to injuries. The report said that she had no visible marks of abuse. So don’t call Delonte a “wife beater.”

What he did was bad (and he should be punished), but don’t exaggerate the crime.

omni, in the same vein (you don’t know what happened) so how can you say what he did is bad?

  • 14. October 26, 2009

She went to the airport to file a police report?

    Get your stuff together, D-Lo.

Pretty sure the report said there were NO signs of abuse or injury, so how exactly is he a wife beater? Because he tried to take back a wedding ring that probably cost $500,000? She was probably just making the report cause she was upset and wanted it documented. Chill out.

Sean Connery is giving him a standing ovation!

I’m with S-Dub on this: the details are everything – she had no sign of injury, and the issue was that he tried to take back the wedding ring.

Specifically, this sort of domestic violence report looks a lot like an attempt to get leverage in an upcoming divorce proceeding.

This, unfortunately, was probably inevitable. As Roosevelt said above, this is par for the course with bipolar disorder. Delonte got married when he was up and feeling good and off his pills. Just got a new contract in his high profile NBA gig, got a new house, new wife, the whole domestic works. Probably felt on top of things and able to handle extended responsibility easily. Then the dark comes back and everything feels like pressure and aggression. Lashing out at people closest is natural.

Windy’s tweets seem to indicate that this is not as big a deal as it would seem, maybe just an argument between stressed and perhaps somewhat imbalanced people* that is not completely out of the ordinary. I imagine because it is D. West the red flag went up with the media (understandable). Windhorst also says Delonte may even play tomorrow, so clearly the team is not that thrown by this particular incident.

*I say “people” here because, while we know nothing of the new Mrs. West, in my observations bipolar sufferers often attract those who also have some sort of disfunction themselves; not necessarily bipolar, but something on the spectrum. When these types of disorders collide at low points it is often like throwing gasoline on a grease fire. This is just a guess, though- I have no business assuming anything about Mrs. West. She’s probably quite lovely.

But in other news, Glen Davis is out with a thumb injury he got during a bar fight! The Celtic wheels may be coming off earlier than expected.

  • 20. October 26, 2009

Or maybe the fight was in a library, or perhaps a barber shop. I created the bar fight scenario in my head. Either way- FIGHT!

I love Delonte. He is one of the main reasons why I watch the Cavaliers, why i watch basketball, period. He’s battling his demons called bipolar and I’ll always have his back through the gun possessions to these domestic accusations. Plus, he’s hot and I miss seeing his sexy self on the court.
