Former Browns GM Savage Not Loving The Browns Changes

Thanks to The OBR’s Twitter we have this from Phil Savage-
“You don’t take a lot of solace in watching a place you leave go downhill further,” he said. “But they took what we did have going there and they just dismantled that even further. We left two quarterbacks behind that both seem ruined right now. They traded a lot of players out of there. I feel for the guys we brought in because they’re good players and good people and they’re stuck in a situation and can’t get out for at least the time being.”
I would disagree about one thing in his statement. He implies that the current management ruined both quarterbacks. I maintain that Anderson was ruined long before Savage was fired. He is what he is. As for Quinn, he may be ruined in Cleveland, but there is still hope for his career. We certainly don’t have a large enough sample size to accurately call Quinn ‘ruined’.
Take Kyle Orton for example. Anyone think he would be 7th in the NFL with a 100.1 rating this year? The Bears certainly didn’t think so. How many chances did he get there? Orton started 15 games in 2005, none in ‘06, only 3 in ‘07, 15 again in ‘08 and then got traded to the Broncos.
Savage is right about one thing though. It would be pretty terrible to haved signed a free agent deal, say after the 2007 season, and then go through this.

I like how he said “you don’t take A LOT of solace” in the fact that we are now worse. You know he is giddy inside that the man who replaced him is struggling to turn this joke of a franchise around. Who wouldn’t be though after inheriting what savage left. Here’s to a new tomorrow and the promise that one day we will get someone who knows what they are doing and is compassionate towards the team, fans, and city.

Well he likely can’t say much more since he’s probably still being paid by the team.

Hey Rick, I think you might have a typo. Orton started 3 games in ‘07 and 15 in ‘08. He missed one start b/c of an ankle injury.

I mean – he really shouldn’t say anything….I agree w/ him though.

@ Mark P- what, me typo? Never, never…
thanks.

It would be even worse to have signed a free agent deal in 2007 AND killed a pedestrian in 2008!

Savage looks quite savage in that photograph.

I mean, its not like Savage did anything to help the cap situation, which made it hard to do anything this offseason. I mean, who trades a 2nd rd. pick for a guy then gives the guy a raise immediately without seeing him on the field? And who gave out guaranteed bonuses to players that were good for a season?

He said Quinn is ruined “right now”. That is 100% correct and accurate-the way he has been so abysmally and recklessly handled has erroded shattered his confidence and faith in this situation under this coach. It certainly doesn’t mean it’s not without the ability to recover under a qualified system and coach-be it here or elsewhere.
bobby-unfortunately you weren’t saying any of the above until Savage was fired………you and most others supported his every move regardless of the mounting draft evidence. You can’t play both sides.

Brady Quinn has Faith – he’s the second coming of Joe Montana, which means he’s the Third Coming of Christ!

After Savage’s back and forth with the fan during the Buffalo game now this. I think Savage suffers from foot in mouth disease and considering the team is still sending him a paycheck i would shut it if i were him.

They should have kept Phil and hired Marty.

totally random… but I’m pretty sure I printed the backdrop in that picture, back when I worked as an operator for a large format printing manufacturer. I have a duplicate of it hanging in my office that I “borrowed”, heh.
Figured I’d mention it.
Ironically enough, I now work for the company that makes those “Q” and I” pretzels for the Indians & Cavs (as well as Superpretzel in general). See, I moved to Philly, but still givin’ back to my teams!

@13 — agreed.

@7, I love it. Thankfully, the Browns still saw fit to pay him an enormous bonus based on his exemplary 2008 production.

You have to tear it down for a fresh new start. I like what Mangini has done by getting rid of all the “me first” players and inserting team players. Give him a few more years and a new OC with experience for next year.

Im sorry Isis, but when did I support Savages every move?

mangini sucks.

Agree with Savage. I disliked the way he treated Kellen. I disliked the way he handcuffed Romeo about the starting QB. But I liked how he was willing to try to make Cleveland a franchise of note with BIG trades. Bring in some big name guys and try to not only win games but sell jersey’s and get airtime on ESPN.

Mangini is not an NFL-caliber head coach. When we lose @ Detroit will Lerner finally realize this and stop the bleeding?
