Putting the “U” in Uncomfortable
I’m sorry, but this video has to be posted. Browns Coach Eric Mangini meets the media today and pulls a Mark McGwire. He can’t say anything about what has happened to his “good friend” George Kokinis. The tension in the room is epic. It’s a great watch. So without further ado, here is your head coach and “face of the franchise” addressing the events of yesterday….or not.

I completely understand this press conference, and I respect that. However, I am not able to respond to it for various reasons. I’m just going to leave it at that.

Next question!

OBSERVE the way he parted his hair.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Yo Hold up, Eric Mangini I appreciate what you’re trying to do, and I’m gonna let you finish but Romeo had some of the best press conferences of all time.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Brian has it right – there are various reasons.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Dead. Man. Walking. (and he knows it)
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Wow! That was funny and painful at the same time. This bunker mentality only makes the disorganization in Berea look even worse. Mangini needs something to take the spotlight off the front-office chaos. Something like, oh, I don’t know, like maybe a quarterback controversy.
Did someone say quarterback controversy? Comin’ right up!
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 pm
OBSERVE. He is careful I think with the language.
“I wish his family well.” not he and his family
“That’s all I can say.”
Expect the Browns to get sued in the next few months. Book it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
@6, agreed… Mangini was about as depressed as I have ever seen. Beer is a depressant, Eric… it won’t help you feel better.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Glad i beat Isis here…
I’m glad to see the changes coming, but won’t bash Mangini – i like some of the culture he’s instilled, i just scratch my head at his judgement when DA can continue to start at QB…Glad to see Lerner roll his sleeves up and get involved.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I for one personally can’t wait until next season when that is the newest hottest Coors light commercial……
Guys in the Crowd – “Coach Mangini, Coach Mangini…….if you were in a desert and you needed one drop of liquid to quench your thirst and survive until the rescue party found you…..would you drink a blue mountain, refreshingly cold Coors light if you happened to find it inside a cactus?”
Mangini – ” I appreciate and understand your question guys, but at this time I’m not going to talk about it”
Guys – ” But coach Mangini, its Coors Light, it’s hot out, you’re thirsty…how could you even think about NOT drinking it”
Mangini – “Once again guys, I understand and appreciate your question, but I will not answer it at this time.”
INSTANT. CLASSIC.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Is it bad when you wake up every morning hoping to see Mangini’s face next to the word “Fired” on Espn.com? Seriously, I can’t stand the tension, the bore, the secrecy of this guy. What the heck is going on?
*Waiting for the day Mangini is fired so I can watch Ryan and Quinn for a few games (while it lasts)*
(And yes, I know, Ryan is probably not the answer, but between him and Mangini for eight more games…)
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Brian and Jonathan = funny comments
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
And Jonathan, I think there are some marketing gurus at Coors Light who would agree with you…
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
I just find it amazingly hilarious that… this is a football team. We the fans just want to know what’s going-on with the football team we support and this guy treats it like it’s a matter of national security.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
“Eric what would you say to people calling you Mangina and a joke of a coach?”
“Hey I appreciate the question but I cannot answer that.”
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Does Mangini’s look like hes got something up but butt or what? Maybe its Randy’s foot. Let me help everyone to what he was trying to say ‘ I thru my buddy under the bus so I really can’t comment on this but I wish him and his family luck finding another job because hes going to need it” What an *** Mangini is. I am embarrassed to be a Browns fan today.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Poor Mangini: The press smells blood in the water and the only thing he could offer them to deflect the attention was a substantive discussion of Browns football. Yes Eric, we’re dying to know what went on in practice today when you worked on 1st and 2nd down. That’s much more interesting than the story about the team’s GM getting whacked in the middle of the season. Oooh, please tell us what was on the video of things you “thought the team did well.” That would probably lead to an extensive discussion about huddling up, tucking in your jersey, propery hydration, etc.
He could’ve offered to discuss social security reform or medicare and had a better chance of distracting everyone.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:43 pm
“I’m sorry, but we are not going to discuss internal business. All I can say is that my good friend George was processed.”
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:44 pm
@14 Seriously. This reminded me of a Supreme Court confirmation hearing or a four star General discussing anti-terror operations in Afghanistan. I understand that, for various reasons, Mangina doesn’t want to say anything that would look bad on his resume, but c’mon man. Grow some balls.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Now I’m Done.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Grossi – “Hey Eric, why are the Browns such a God awful football team this year?”
Mangini – “Tony, I understand and appreciate that question, really, it’s appreciated. But I can only comment on things that are under my control. I can’t talk about this for a variety of reasons.”
Also, a “Brown scouting report”? I think I left one of those in my toilet this morning.
Zing!

That was akward
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:04 pm
He sounds to me like a man under instructions. And, like me, he does not want to get fired today.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Shortest book in literary history: “Things We’ve Done Well in First and Second Down Packages” by Cleveland Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini.
Oy!
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Josh @#10 likes “the culture” Mangini is developing? Explain man……that’s beyond perplexing. Sounds like you’re the one drinking here (kool-aid, not beer). Some culture my friend……great “observation”.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:40 pm
I actually think he puts the ‘u’ in dumbass.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:49 pm
How is Mangini’s refusal to expound at length on Kokinis news? Reporters have to do their jobs and ask these questions, but if the Browns (and who knows, maybe Mangini himself) expect to be sued in response to Kokinis’ dismissal, they absolutely are not going to lay it all out for the press, no matter how many times the question is asked.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pm
There’s no question, given the way he looks and the way talks, that he’s feeling a lot of guilt. About what things, exactly, I don’t know, but I hope for a lot. Maybe he’ll turn his act around and actually try to atone in some way, though I’m also not at all upset if he’s the next dismissed.
On that topic, note that he says “We’ve had one situation where that is the case” to correct the question about “two dismissals.” I wonder how to interpret that.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
He is who we thought he was.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pm
“We have a strong structure in place on the personnel side.”
I have no joke here. I thought about it for about five minutes. And I couldn’t come up with anything. I think I blacked out for a bit, actually.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:07 pm
But Eric you have never explained whether or not you understand the question. Please let us know when you understand the question.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
The media should have told Mangini aka Doug Heffernan from King of Queens to go back to acting and stop ruining our football team
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
OBSERVE TEH KOOL-AID BUNKER!
I like a lot of the things he’s doing in this press conference, and I think, organizationally, it is the right direction that we want to go.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
@11, I can see it now. Nice work on that one.
At the start of the presser I understood Mangini, because really when can a team come out and just talk about the firing of a GM and everything involved right away? But by the end, Mangini was not even listening to reporters, it was like he wrote 3 sentences down on a piece of paper and just kept saying those 3 things. I understand you cant say anything now, but when will we hear whats happening? Its like Mangini is hoping if he sticks to his words people will just forget what happened and he will never have to answer.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
We aren’t good enough to have a QB controversy. We will lose no matter who starts.
And Lerner is a coward for making Mangini deflect this. Clearly he’s already in over his head and this only makes it worse.
You’d think an experienced football mind would want to come here…they get total control and can be the guy who turned around a pitiful but once great franchise. Can’t we make an offer to Marty and give him total control?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Excuse me, I live in California now, so I’m a little out of the loop.
Is there a head coach at St. Joe’s or St. Ignatius that can take over the Browns until the end of the season? Just to settle things down a bit?
Is Bill Gutbrod still alive?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
#36 I think JP is right. Lerner should have been the one having a news conference today.
Still, it was nice to see Mangini squirm. I’m sure all his players thought so too.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Ub-Zerve!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Honestly, I almost feel bad for him. It’s just football and “fans” want to burn him at the stake. It’s terrible the way Lerner has run the organization, but I’m pretty sure for legal reasons there was A LOT he couldn’t say. It was the owner that got us in this mess. I like that Mangini has stupid rules and structure…that’s what happens in Boot Camp. Grow a pair guys, you’re getting paid millions. For 10 years, a variety of coaches have come in here and tried to get these guys to execute. Why does it seem the talent is always elsewhere?

is it wrong for me to actually miss Art Modell?
