While We’re Waiting… Browns Injuries, LeBron vs. Deshawn, and New Cavs Nicknames

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

So when Mangini was talking about evaluating their injuries, this is what he meant… “Punter Dave Zastudil, who may have been headed to the Pro Bowl for the first time, and tight end Steve Heiden, the second-longest-tenured Brown on the active roster, were placed onto the Injured Reserve List late Wednesday afternoon and thus will be lost for the rest of the season. It’s more bad news for the bandaged-up and beaten-down Browns, who, at 1-8 and having lost four in a row, stagger to Detroit on Sunday to face the equally staggering 1-8 Lions, losers of six straight.” [The OBR]

The Cavs lost, but at at least lebron didn’t hurt himself showboating on a meaningless dunk during DeShawn Stevenson’s “bobble-hand” night. Oh, wait… “There’s been so much trash talk and hard fouls — and even venomous rap songs — between James and the Washington Wizards’ DeShawn Stevenson. The scoreboard is overwhelming in James’ favor, from playoff victories to flagrant fouls to Jay-Z in the studio having his back.  This time, though, the worm turned, and in a most bizarre and unexpected way. All on Stevenson’s “bobble hand” night. That’s right, the sellout got tattoo-free figurines with the Stevenson’s hand wagging in front of his plastic face.”

Remember this guy? “The Oakland Raiders benched former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell on Wednesday, handing the starting job to journeyman Bruce Gradkowski for the foreseeable future… The Raiders believed [Jamarcus] Russell would be the quarterback to turn the struggling franchise around when they drafted him No. 1 out of LSU in 2007 and eventually gave him a contract with about $31 million in guaranteed money. But his career has sputtered from the start.” [ESPN]

Can you hear me now? Blech… “You know what’s missing in today’s land of TV commercials? I’ll tell you. Sports characters. Personalities created largely out of thin air to help sell a product or service – be it beer, shoes, a network or a name. Hell, even if those creations of Madison Avenue never made those brands a buck, they sure made me laugh. But I’ll be honest, it’s been awhile since someone’s run with a campaign long enough for me to develop that special bond. You know, the one you may have had with Terry, Lil’ Penny, Mars or maybe even The Rick. I was even starting to find a soft spot for Bud Light Leon. In honor of these sporty fictitious pitch men, a few of my favorites (and hoping for another star to soon emerge).”[Legend of Cecilio Guante]

I am guessing this doesn’t have anything to do with the consumption of chili. “However, if McLeod came up with this nickname for JJ Hickson – The Prince of Fresh Air – I have to take a step back and just offer Fred a genuine helping of ‘props.’ That’s as solid of a nickname as I’ve heard in some time. And even if he overheard the Cavaliers calling him that in practice, I’d still give him that same knuckled up dap for popularizing the term.” [Stepien Rules]

    Death to Jimmy Football.

    Ah, there’s nothing like watching a big lead disappear while you’re jacking up rushed, off-balance, fall-away three-pointers with 2 left on the shot clock. I just can’t get enough of that, and apparently neither can the Cavs.

    Can we all just send LeBron a card or something telling him that he’s really good? That way he won’t feel the need to try and show up benchwarmers, kill the offense and essentially lose the game.

    Stop being so stupid Clown baby.

    LeBron is in no way responsible for killing the offense…in fact he was one of the few guys making shots last night.

    Mo, Delonte and Parker had a combined 7 made shots…THE ENTIRE GAME!

    Lebron was basically a solo act in the 3rd quarter, scoring 15 out of the 21 total points. So if anything, maybe he was tired of doing every himself.

    Well thought out retort, cavsman. However, this team is much more productive when Lebron involves those around him on the court. If you can’t see that by watching the games, I don’t know what to tell you.

    Last night when the defense sputtered and Lebron started indiscriminately shooting jump shots is when the game took a turn for the worse. They had no offensive rhythm because Lebron was taking all the shots, and Washington got hot, and that was the end of it.

    i hope the browns and raiders strike an agreement to start russell vs DA when they come to town later this season

    He was one of the few making shots because he was one of the few TAKING SHOTS. Yes he was a solo act…that is the problem. He brings the ball up the court and stands there and pounds it for 20 seconds and throws up a wild shot. That is not good team ball. You are obviously a fanboy that doesn’t get the concept though…and when you have to resort to calling somebody stupid to try and make a point you are demonstrating your own lack of knowledge.

    I’m also digging McLeod’s “Flat Tire” call. You gotta admit, he works harder than AC. I’m done with “throwing the hammer down”…it’s so 2008-2009.

    Terry Tate was awesome. For like two weeks. And then the commercials got stupid (Office Linebacker on vacation? What?).

    If only they could get the Geico Gecko and Cavemen to go the same route and get rid of themselves…

    However, “wham with the right hand” never gets old.

    In other news, I’m tired of Jim Donovan yelling at me.

    Clownbaby is 100% correct — Lebron can, at times, absolotuely KILL our offense with poor shot selection and arrogance, but its the price we pay for having the best player in the world. Some nights he will take over a game and other he will lose it for us. We just hope that its a positive +/- at the end of the year.

    it’s not good team ball, you’re right. But we’re talking about one game! actually one quarter of one game!

    i do understand the concept of team ball; however you have to understand the concept of LeBron.

    We’re lucky to have a LeBron caliber player who can take over a 4th quarter by himself. Of course Lebron will have a bad quarter once in a while, but i wouldn’t trade that for the 60+ win he can provide us every season.

    Why can’t we call out Delonte or Mo for killing the offense last night? LeBron did what he is supposed to do and unfortunately we couldn’t pull it off.

    @12

    You’re talking about this like it’s the first time it’s ever happened. There have been several times over the past few years that he’s taken the ball out of the hands of the rest of the team and that caused the offense to halt. It’s nice when Lebron gets hot and it was fun during the Detroit series a couple of years ago but honestly I hate seeing it now because that’s not championship basketball.

    It isn’t even so much that he’s the only one taking shots, it’s that he’s dribbling for 20 seconds, letting the defense get set, and then tossing up a horrible shot because he let the clock drop too low. He’s smarter than that, and he’s better than that.

    @12:

    Don’t have too much to add on top of what EZ said. I know LeBron is a rare talent and all of that. In case you haven’t noticed however, LeBron also has not won a championship and if he continues to take the offense out of it’s rhythm for every guy that says a few words to him he isn’t going to win any time soon. Look at last night and how the Cavs got a 17 point lead…it was because everyone was involved. That lead evaporated when LeBron took over and didn’t let others even attempt to shoot out of their cold streak.

  • 15. November 19, 2009

    LeBron killed the offense last night. Killed it dead. This is not deniable. It was horrendous. Then he hurt himself acting big making a slam dunk. Not only did the dunk injure him but it wasted about 9 seconds off the clock while they had to go find the ball.

    LeBron last night gets no props.
