Baltimore Ravens (4-4) at Cleveland Browns (1-7) | Cleveland Browns Stadium
8:30 PM EST | ESPN, WJW-TV (Ch. 8); WMMS FM/100.7.
48 degrees, winds 13 mph | Line: BAL (-10.5)

Nothing says Browns Football like the primetime, national stage.  Prepare for a few mentions of the “protest,” Brady Quinn’s return, Jamal Lewis’ statements regarding Eric Mangini and the all-around ineptness that is the Orange and Brown.

Jon Gruden (he who replaced our beloved TK NK) has recently signed a contract extension with ESPN, though he was one of the rumored names to be possibly replacing Eric Mangini if he were to be given the pink slip following one season.  This, I imagine, will not be discussed tonight.

As always, feel free to follow along in the comments below.  Please be coginzant of our commenting policy regardless of how awful things get.

For what it’s worth, BoDog has this bet open for tonight’s contest:

What will be higher in Week 10 of the 2009 NFL Regular Season?

Baltimore Ravens first half points (+115)
Cleveland Browns total points (-155)

Discuss.  Go Browns!

Here’s what I want to see. Listen up Browns.

Massiquoi wide left, Quinn tight left, DA slot Right, Robiskie wide Right, Cribbs under center.

Cribbs hands to Quinn, Quinn to DA on the reverse, DA to Cribbs deep for the TD.

    yep, I’m crazy.

block in the back has to be one of my least favorite penalties – not because i dont like the penalty itself, but because its one that you would think could be avoided easily enough – DONT PUT YOUR HANDS ON A GUYS BACK WHEN HE’S RUNNING IN FRONT OF YOU! i could stab the quarterback and the roughing the passer call wouldnt have been as obvious as that block in the back was…fml

OK, seriously, what’s the problem here? Can Quinn not make the throw, or has there been a single play call so far that would let him throw down field? I’m seeing lots of quick slants, screens, short throws and such. Has there been a play to let him throw it long?

  • Tim
    65. November 16, 2009

I agree, I don’t care how inexperienced our receivers are- they are not so unathletic that they can get absolutley no separation. Let them go, run a double-move or anything other than the 3-yard routes we’re seeing.

  • Goalie007

“Can’t anybody play this here game?”

    - Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel

Great quote by the manager of the original 1962 Amazin’ Mets, who were almost as bad as this Browns team. Certainly applies here-

  • ClemJax
    67. November 16, 2009

Completely off the record, but between this game and the massive national coverage the Cavs have had for the last few weeks, it’s wonderful seeing all the images of downtown Cleveland while I’m sitting out on my back porch watching the game.

  • ClemJax
    71. November 16, 2009

Jack, I’m curious, what do you want Quinn to do? 90% of the play calls have been quick screens or quick slants. You throw the play that’s called, right?

  • Alex

I think it’s safe to say that our offensive coordinator is the worst in the history of the NFL. No, make that all of football.

  • Jack
    74. November 16, 2009

ClemJax: My point is two pronged…

    1) I want all the people pissing and moaning about DA to realize that this team sucks and that Brady Quinn is actually a far worses quarterback than DA, as difficult as that may be to believe.

    2) MORE IMPORTANTLY: To realize that the play selection results from his Brady’s lack of ability. That is the causal directionality. We call these plays because he can’t make the throws. We called lots of deep routes with DA because he was capable of throwing them (however [in]accurately).

BRADY CAN’T THROW FAR; THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE SEEN MORE SCREENS TONIGHT THAN IN THEIR COLLECTIVE FOOTBALL LIVES.

  • MattC
    75. November 16, 2009

this is worse than the “ask madden” offense – for surus.

  • DCBucks
    76. November 16, 2009

There are 5 dirtbirds in the backfield the instant the ball is snapped. Unless the receivers are getting shot out of a rail gun there is no way a pass is going down field. Not saying that BQ would make the pass, if he had time, but we’ll never know.

The Browns just flat out suck. Dahole must have studied under Jim Bollman at OSU.

  • Tim
    77. November 16, 2009

Oh good, The Shot. That’s applicable.

    80. November 16, 2009

The worst team in the NFL and it isn’t even close.

  • Alex
    81. November 16, 2009

74, you’re wrong. The scouting reports of him coming out of ND included the fact that he had a strong arm. If people thought he had a strong arm coming out of college, why would he be unable to make 20 yard throws now? Answer: he can still make them, they’re just never called because we have a clump of dirt calling plays.

  • Lebron3eb
    84. November 16, 2009

Ray Rice has a passer rating of 39.1. He threw one incomplete pass. BQ has a rating of 15.1… I love Brady, and this is definitely a result of many factors (offensive line, playcalling), but man…this is atrocious. Not that i want DA…he sucks too. It might be better to take a knee every down…

  • Jack
    85. November 16, 2009

Alex, why then did they call them for DA?

Why were scouts concerned about his arm strength at the combine?

Why did he, in fact, finish in the bottom 50% in arm strength drills at the workout?

    Riddle me this, Alex?

  • 88. November 16, 2009

Also, at this point I’d like to point out that Jim Tressel is embarrassed that Mangini won’t let BQ throw down field.

  • whipjacka
    89. November 16, 2009

the worst part is that our defense actually showed up tonight and it was a totally wasted effort

  • Alex
    90. November 16, 2009

Jack, finishing in bottom 50% doesn’t mean he can’t make 20 yard throws, and if you think it does, you’re just full of it. As alluded to above by everyone, our OC is godawful. DA had those called because they were the ONLY chance he had to make completions, since short throws bounced off feet and into the other team’s hands. What else are you gonna call with someone who cannot make a 5-10 yard pass to save his life?

Quinn can make those throws. They result in completions. Again, our OC is a clump of dirt, and everyone has pointed out all the terrible decisions Mangini has made about everything, so why do you think they’re right about anything? And where are these scouting reports from before the draft? I looked up a few a while back and the only thing I could find that didn’t require paying for noted that Quinn’s arm strength was a positive.

“Whether NFL insiders agree with Coach Weis remains to be seen…”

  • Tim

Hey, we’re winning the time of possession battle. Mangini’s ball control offense is finally working!

  • Goalie007
    93. November 16, 2009

It really does appear that the defense in general is making the effort and keeping the game reasonably under control. On the other hand, the offense would have trouble with a good college team.

  • Alex
    94. November 16, 2009

Jack, notice that that video makes NO comments whatsoever about his arm strength. That…doesn’t reinforce your point. Underthrowing AND overthrowing deep balls was mentioned.

  • historycat
    95. November 16, 2009

Hmm, a long pass by Quinn. He can do it!!

  • Jack
    96. November 16, 2009

Alex, do you realize what you are saying?

“DA had those called because they were the ONLY chance he had to make completions, since short throws bounced off feet and into the other team’s hands. What else are you gonna call with someone who cannot make a 5-10 yard pass to save his life?”

But the same logic doesn’t apply for Quinn? Let’s give it a Mad Libs go:
“BQ had those screens called because they were the ONLY chance he had to make completions, since long throw bounced 5 yards away, miss completely, or end up in the other team’s hands. What else are you gonna call with someone who cannot make a 10-20 yard pass to save his life?”

    I mean, really?

(While writing this post we got to see a number of abysmally passes for Quinn. Did you see how high he had to throw that ball to get it 30 yards to Mass? Geez.)

  • Team Brady
    97. November 16, 2009

    3 long passes!!! woah!

so, apparently he can make them. they just need to refine the accuracy and timing and they might actually complete a few of them…

  • Jack
    98. November 16, 2009

Alex, I know about the video…I put it up because it was hilarious. Despite our disagreements, and I think you’ll agree that my last post puts you in a bit of a bind, at least from a formal argument’s perspective) that we can join the hilarity of that video as brotherly Browns fans.

Like Weis still having demi-god status and acting as Brady’s “mentor.”

Or Romeo Crennel just being Romeo Crennel.

  • 99. November 16, 2009

Not surprising at this point of the debacle that ESPN’s coverage has devolved into Gruden/Tirico/Jaws flirting endlessly, and the comments here have devolved into DA/BQ debate. :[

  • Jack
    100. November 16, 2009

Denny, the Tressel comment was lolz.

Not a DA/BQ debate though. Just a cause-effect debate. We don’t call long throws because BQ has to morph into Ben Gordon to get the ball 30 yards.

Not exactly a frozen rope. More like a rainmaker.

  • Alex
    101. November 16, 2009

    It does no such thing.

It’s not the same. Short passes are higher percentage completions. If someone can make them, you generally call more short passes with a few long ones (unless you’re Al Davis). If you can’t make short passes but can theoretically make long ones, you call more long ones than is usual. If you can make both, you still call far more short than long. Dunno why that’s hard.

That was a morbidly amusing video solely based on Weis. Anything he’s done in the past is funny now.

  • Alex
    102. November 16, 2009

Ok, I’m done with the BQ/DA debate, you can put in a last word if you want. Let’s just enjoy the slaughter.

  • Alex
    103. November 16, 2009

Also Ben Gordon singlehandedly cost me my fantasy game last week in the last day when he went 3/6 on FTs and 1/16 on FGs. I’ve gotta believe Quinn could hit more than that.

  • bobby
    104. November 16, 2009

We just need an O coordinator. Can we start a fire Brian Daboll protest? His playcalling is so awful… I dont care if its BQ or DA, make playcalling consistent. Maybe the WRs cant get serperation and thats the big problem with play calling, but geez, this is awful right now.

  • 105. November 16, 2009

I think Quinn is jealous of Ben Gordon’s delts and lats – that’s why he’s so JACKED UP!

  • Jack
    106. November 16, 2009

I have no words. I just want one f-ing quarterback. Just one. How do teams like the Chargers end up with 2 in a row? Hmm, well, let’s just dump Brees and go with Rivers.

    : (

I just want them to be good. I mean, I really hope Brady lights it up and plays well. He clearly has some athletic ability. Just sad am I.

  • Alex
    107. November 16, 2009

Hey, at least he fell on that fumble. Thanks St. Clair.

  • Jack

  • BB
    111. November 16, 2009

Looks like the brown out is gaining momentum.

  • 112. November 16, 2009

I’d like an O line. That’s most important. The Colts this year prove (to me) that WRs aren’t hugely important – with the injuries they’ve had, they still have the confidence to know they can milk the clock before scoring from the 27 to win.

Get an O-line installed that’s good and I think there will be HUGE differences in the offense, even if the other pieces are the same. Until then, the team’s doomed on the offensive side of the ball.

  • Alex
    113. November 16, 2009

By brown out do you mean the protest, or pile of feces on the field? Either way, I guess it’s growing.

@ Denny- Completely agree. O-Line all the way.

  • Team Brady
    116. November 16, 2009

I made that point about a week ago, Denny, but the readers didn’t like it too much. it needs to be priority one on offense this season. It’ll benefit the QB play and the running game and give the team a better chance to see what they’re working with…

why do I get this upset every weekend. It is as if I don’t expect it

  • Jack
    118. November 16, 2009

We could do with a few grass eaters ourselves…

…at least guys who eat it of their own volition. Unfortunately our offensive players are swallowing turf against their will.

  • Alex
    119. November 16, 2009

Team Brady, I think the problem is that it is not priority one at the top of the draft, which is what it sounded like you were saying. We should not take a RT/RG at the top of the first round. Bottom of first and later, yes. We absolutely need something or someone that can block NFL players. Not in the top 5, where we’ll be picking.

“I have no words. I just want one f-ing quarterback. Just one. How do teams like the Chargers end up with 2 in a row? Hmm, well, let’s just dump Brees and go with Rivers.”

Simple. Other teams develop QBs. Browns ruin them.

Actually, we could probably take out “QBs” and just plug in “prospect.” Boggles the mind that such an abundance of picks–that weren’t considered reaches but legitimate players–have bombed. It can’t be just the player selected in every case–this is an organization that, for all 11 years of its existence, has proven all but incapable of developing NFL talent.

And Baltimore got to 132 rushing yards, so that’s 13 straight games giving up at least 130 on the ground.

but I wasn’t necessarily talking about the draft, though it did look that way after I reread it…

just left the game at the beginning of the 4th Q… got told I’m not a true fan because I left early even though I’m 22 still in college with an awful job and have season tickets even though I can’t really afford them but still drive up from south of columbus atleast 8 sundays a year… saw a lot of other people having the same argument, its come to brown on brown crimes. this team is pathetic and makes me sick.

  • Alex
    126. November 16, 2009

@124, it worked with Thomas because he’s a LEFT tackle. Who was the only RT taken at the top of the first this year? Andre Smith by the Bengals, who hasn’t played yet this season. RT do not go at the top of the draft. That’s the difference.

But yes, absolutely we need to pick up any and all good/promising RT/RG we can get through the draft and free agency. Maybe we can cut some of our 30 ST players.

So what’s up with Cribbs? Is he out for the season?

  • Alex
    128. November 16, 2009

I’m glad the D showed up. Not just for the almost hint of competition, but also because I was only up 47 in my fantasy game with the other team having Ray Rice.

I didnt even see the hit on cribbs, but c’mon man, its obvious the game was over, who the [WFNY EDIT] would take a run on the guy? thats cheap dirty ratbird football.

Props to the D today, they played good

  • Alex
    140. November 17, 2009

I pray to all things holy Cribbs is ok. That play was stupid, and he is always taking hard hits so it was only a matter of time before something like this happen. I just hope he is ok

First thing Browns need to do is can Daboll and bring in an OC who knows something about football. At some point, you need to call a playaction on 2nd down and Quinn knows how to sell it, at least he could at ND.

The Browns burned a #1 on Quinn so they should keep him for next year. They should draft O-Line and defense. Take a flyer on some RBs late in the draft. Sign a veteran reciever and a veteran backup QB.

Or, hire Urban Meyer to run the spread, use Quinn like Tebow, and trade your 1st rounder to the Vikes for Harvin.

  • Dave

@ 139 – I agree, lewis hit royal. they didn’t show the hit on cribbs.

  • bobby

no lewis hit royal… cribbs lateralled it then you couldnt see what happened to him next… it didnt look to me like there was anyone near him

    145. November 17, 2009

@141 – Thanks, that was what I thought I saw–and Lewis’ hit on Royal didn’t look at all vicious to me.

Did they not show the Cribbs hit on TV?

PFT reports: “Cribbs appeared to take a forearm to the throat after lateraling the ball to tight end Robert Royal.”

  • Alex
    146. November 17, 2009

They showed the hit and it dint look like anything horrible, but a forearm to the throat is going to hurt the morning. Again, stupid play and what a waste for our best player.

How about brady not being able to throw a deep ball inbounds? That’s not going to cut it.

Gruden from NE ohio? Kinda nice to have the national media not killing Cleveland for a change, untill they went back to that piece of siht berman. Fat fcuker

  • Alex
    147. November 17, 2009

We need to start using initials apparently (145 is not me). This team has 99 problems at least. Perhaps we should consult Jay Z.

  • 148. November 17, 2009

@126 – Michael Oher out of Ole Miss was drafted as a left tackle but switched over to right tackle two weeks ago. He was picked somewhere around 20 or so in the first round this year.

I think any offensive lineman would help.. Even the supposed good side of our line including Thomas, Steinbach and Mack were way over-matched today. Dare we draft another LT/LG/C this coming year? It is obvious that our line is flawed but we should not entirely ignore the right side because it is not traditionally highly valued in the league.

  • phred
    149. November 17, 2009

    Agreed, Alex (both of you.)

Watching that second half was quite literally nauseating.

This whole thing is rotten to the core. From the top down.

It was apparent to some of us during the last hiring cycle–I don’t know how anybody could miss it now.

From the owner refusing to either (a) lead or (b) hire proper leadership, to the poor talent evaluation, lousy drafting, and lack of player development, the PUTRID coaching and playcalling, the lack of playmaking ability by the players, the horrendous PR problems between the organization and its fans… it’s really unbelievable.

I’ve been a Browns fan as long as I can remember, since hearing my grandfather and uncles tell stories about watching Otto Graham, Groza, Jim Brown play… but I just can’t take it anymore. The level of ineptitude displayed in every single facet of this thing is… incredible. I’d say I can’t wait until we’re post-Mangini, but I don’t see him going anywhere (he’s the one with Lerner’s ear right now, he’ll get the chance to blow our 11 picks in this upcoming draft) but even if he were gone, I have zero faith in Lerner to correct anything. I’m at a loss.

I listened to this game. I wish I hadnt Doug Dieken is ATROCIOUS. Like the Browns offense. And its not “just” Brady. Its him, the running backs, the o-line, the wide recievers, or ANYONE on the “offensive” side of the ball. Not to mention the Coordinator, how did this guy get his job? I designed better plays on Madden 04 at 15 yrs old…

  • phred
    151. November 17, 2009

And PFT just reported Cribbs is being treated for a concussion.

Hope the kid’s OK, and that they were just being cautious.

  • 152. November 17, 2009

    Question to all Browns fans:

Besides Josh Cribbs and Dave Zastudil, what players on this team would be intrinsically valuable to a potential playoff team for the Browns? Clearly those two names are potential Pro Bowlers this season on special teams, but I am having trouble truly identifying anyone else worthwhile. The team just is very, very, very almost historically bad.

    153. November 17, 2009

Shaun Rogers is still a stud. Like to see him on a quality team.

  • Alex
    154. November 17, 2009

Still Thomas and Rogers. Even if Thomas isn’t up to his rookie year (which is a high standard), he’s still above average at LT. Same with Shaun. That’s about it, though.

  • Stinkfist
    155. November 17, 2009

@146, you are absolutely genius. We get Jay-Z to make a song about all of the Browns problems, then some rich dude who inherited a perennial bottom feeder in the English Premier League will buy the Browns and make us a competitive squad. The combination of Jay-Z’s association with a newly competitive Browns team and the poor play of the Dallas Cowboys may be enough to turn LeBron from a Cowboys fan to a Browns fan. Hopefully, more Cowboys fans will convert as LeBron is clearly the most influential man alive. This only increases the chances of signing Dirk Nowitzki of the DALLAS Mavericks and/or Texas-native Chris Bosh. The signing of these superstars (who are more than willing to settle for half what they could get anywhere else) will keep LeBron (and half our economy) right where he belongs. Anyone got Jay-Z’s phone number?

  • bobby
    156. November 17, 2009

Theres a few players you can look at and say these can be role players for a championship team. Rogers and Thomas are key parts. Mack is still developing, but he has definitely gotten better. I think with Thomas, Steinbach, Mack, and Fraley theres a good base for the OL. Draft a RT in rd. 2 or so, and this could be a good unit. Fraley drastically improves the OL with his ability to be an “on-field mentor” for Mack. He helps him learn and helps people recognize blitzes when he’s out there.

Our D really isnt that awful either. Getting a stud S, or DB (really both) is a top priority. I want Eric Berry coming here and teaming with Pool and Abe as our safeties. We need a number 2 guy (or 1 so wright can go to 2), because Mcdonald gets roasted everwhere. After that, getting a D Ware type OLB is the next thing to make this D really good. Jackson and Maiva look like they can work well in the middle, and you just need big ends to finish it out (robaire and coleman are doing decently).

Then the O… I addressed the OL. We have no real viable TE (Royal blows, heiden old) We have no #1 WR (someone mentioned the colts don’t really have great WRs, but they have good coaches and a great QB). The worst thing by far about our offense though is Brian Daboll. He needs to go and we need to get a creative, proven OC in here. Cribbs is being way under utilized, and the play calling simply is god awful. I dont know about BQ because espn did a good job in pointing out the WRs arent running farther then 5 yards. Let this offense loose, because obviously what they are doing is not working.

Let’s put it to a vote:

Should Mangini go…and if so, when?

Hell, watch him get lucky enough to win a second game and get a contract extension by Lerner for exceeding expectations.

    159. November 17, 2009

    a. The defense is still playing hard for Ryan – that’s a credit to him in a lost season.

    b. Please, for the love of God, draft OL and defense. This team is not a “skill position” player away from being good.
