So, Eric… About Josh Cribbs’ Contract Situation…

Cribbs Pay That Man His Money_med

Eight rushes, 87 yards; One reception, nine yards; Two kickoff returns, 43 yards; Two punt returns, 61 yards.  Oh, and a special teams tackle for good measure.

Joshua Cribbs was a very large part of the first win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in six years.  He’s the most explosive option that the Browns have on either side of the ball.  I think we can all agree that No. 16 has earned a pay raise.

Let’s get it done. As said best by Deion Sanders last night, “#PayTheMan ”

He has absolutely earned a pay raise and I praise him even more for being cordial and respectful of the situation during his after-game interview last night. “Prime Time” had the right idea trying to pry something out of him but Cribbs shot him down.

Does Mangini even have the authority to pay him at this point? Does he need to negotiate with the czar that hasn’t been chosen yet?

Cribbs earned a pay raise long before last night, but his performance vs. Pittsburgh just sealed the deal.

Cribbs has been the most valuable player on Cleveland’s roster for some time now and I think all Browns fans, and the nation, finally realized as much last night.

    Show. Him. The. Money.

Did anyone else notice in the post game interview last night that Josh Cribbs’ head looked rather large. I’m not talking about his ego at all, just the physical dimensions of his head.

The man just like he has bloated melon sitting on the top of his neck. You know, kind of like Barry Bonds.

I wonder if he has been taking PEDs. I know that is an outlandish claim to make based solely on a 20 second clip of a post game interview, but I’m just saying…

BTW, if that’s what it takes to get a win over the Steelers, I’m all for it.

    @Ike

Absolutely true; he earned it way before last night and even this season but last night should be one that seals it for good. The man deserves his money without a doubt.

    @Logan

If you’re talking about the interview on the field, it might have been just that he had to tuck all his hair inside that nylon hood thing he was wearing.

I think Mangini won’t approve a raise for him, because Cribbs went public with it last summer and fall.
Also agree that maybe Mangini doesn’t have the authority to grant a a raise now.
The new GM will make some PR points with fans and the media if he grants a raise to Cribbs as one of his first decisions..

To this point I’ve been pretty much against the whole pay raise situation.

At this point though it’s pretty obvious even to me that the man as fully earned a raise. Here’s hoping that once the offseason hits something is done about this.

does anybody know what kind of money his agent is looking for?

  • 10. December 11, 2009

I would say something just shy of Hester, unfortunately. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re asking for a five-year/$35 million extension…

  • 11. December 11, 2009

(with at least $10 million guaranteed.)

If the coaches are able to keep working him into the offense he’d quite frankly be worth Hester money. He was our leading rusher last night with something like 10 yards per carry. If he gets more touches and they throw in more wrinkles to the flash package, that plus his phenomenal return game would make him more productive than Hester. Has Hester ever been as important to a Bears win as Cribbs was to our win last night?

It’s not exactly my money, but I’d be all for 4 yrs/$28-32 million with lets say $10-12 guaranteed. That would keep him through his age 30 season. I love it. Very similar to per year/guaranteed as picks 9-12 in last years draft. Also, as mentioned by someone else, we need to get him in the backfield more with Quinn under center, maybe side by side with Jennings. More like what NOLA used to do with Bush, you know, when he was good.

Isn’t there an online petition for this or something like that to send to Randy Lerner or the organization in general? Seems like there would be. I’m too lazy to look myself.

EZ, spot on analysis. Hester got 4 years, $40 million max, $15 guaranteed.

The talk I remember was centered around making Cribbs a Brown for life, front-loading the contract, and protecting him in case of injury (guaranteed money), but more in line with what Scott said.

For what Hester is producing in Chicago, he’s not worth the contract. He doesn’t really return anymore and is more of a glorified #2 receiver than a true #1 threat.

I think Cribbs is a different situation. Games like last night the guy had the team on his back. Cribbs seems to be smarter than Hester, more physical than and has a higher ceiling. He is excelling playing in so many different spots and showing no signs of slowing down.

This doesn’t even take into account intangibles, such as being a fan favorite and a team leader. Since the Browns have returned I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have as the face of the franchise. I hope they get something worked out this off-season.

After last night, maybe the team should benchmark Cribbs’ contract against Ronnie Brown’s contract, instead of Hester’s? Does anyone have numbers for Ronnie Brown?

Then again, maybe I’m making too much out of one performance.

Ronnie’s is a bad comparison since he’s still on his rookie contract. Some similar, as no one directly correlates, contracts I’ve found are as follows:

    R Parrish – 3 year extension, $13 million, roughly $5 guaranteed
Hester – 4 year extension for $41 million with $15 guaranteed
Sproles – 1 year $6.6 million (franchised by SD)
    D Ward – 4 year $17 million with $6 guaranteed

First, I have to give props to rotoworld.com for the info, great site. Now, because these “slash” type players are becoming more the norm, most of the good comparibles are still on their rookie contracts. Do you compare him with RBs or WRs? Pat White, R Brown, D McFadden, R Bush, and even further away you could look at L Washington, L Betts, J Norwood; not full time RBs, but very versatile (if not close to Cribbs) players. A lot of these contracts are getting ready to expire, so maybe once we get into the off-season, the market will kind of set itself. Bottom line, he needs (deserves) to be paid as one of the best backup RBs, maybe $7 mill a year, which is right online with what Scott said.

Being the person that he seems to be via interviews, I would think that he would accept an offer that would multiply his salary basically by 10, and also give additional incentives. We’re going to find out soon enough, heh?
