While We’re Waiting… Letters to Lerner, Chris Bosh Unhappy, and Embracing Delonte West

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

Phil Savage and Randy LernerDear, Randy… “I know you were given everything in your life and never had to work for anything, thanks to your father, Al. But I have to believe that you at least picked up some semblance of business savvy. Turns out you didn’t. You had Holmgren in town for two days and you did … what? You let him walk out the door with a handshake and your business card. Since business sense seems to elude you, let me put this in a context that will make sense, a quick session in “Sales 101″ if you will.” [No Logo Needed

Not Ohio related, but thought it was worth mentioning the University of Felons [13 PSI/Deadspin]

I know a certain franchise that would love to have his services: “Chris Bosh is not happy with the Toronto Raptors. And that’s not good for the Raptors. Bosh, their franchise player who can leave as an unrestricted free agent this summer, was second-guessing the Raptors’ strategy after getting drilled in back-to-back games by the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic.” [NBA FanHouse]

LeCharles Bentley, Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach get the nomination for the All-Decade offensive lineman.  Man, what could have been… [Dr. Saturday]

Embracing D-West: “When Phil Martelli saw Delonte West step into the hallway outside the Cavaliers’ locker room, he swiftly moved to him and gave his former star a long embrace.  The St. Joseph’s coach always comes to West’s games at the Wachovia Center if he can, but this visit was clearly important. Martelli spent about a half hour speaking to West before the game in a quiet and private corner of the arena.  West was activated Wednesday to play against the 76ers after spending one game on the inactive list as he continues to look for emotional balance. It hasn’t just been hard for the Cavs to reach West at times this fall. It has been for Martelli, too.” [Brian Windhorst]

    Dear Chris Bosh,

I think it would be neato if you came to Cleveland. You can stay at my parent’s house.

I’m not even going to get excited about Bosh. It would make the Cavs a ridiculous team, but realistically, what’s the chance he ends up here? I’d go 50% Miami, %10 Orlando, %10 Cleveland, %30 somewhere else.

I think you’re giving both Orlando and Clevleand too high of a percentage. Miami, Chicago and (of course) New York are the names that continually get mentioned.

LBJ, Wade, and Bosh are starting their own team in Akron. Just heard it on Mike and Mike.

I understand what Aaron is saying in his letter but with the Rooney rule it wouldn’t have been smart business for Lerner to hire Holmgren this week. For all we know a deal is in place and Lerner just wants to make sure he’s covered. Of course it wouldn’t surprise me either if there is no deal and Aaron is 100% accurate. Lerner hasn’t done much to inspire confidence.

I have to disagree with No Logo Needed on their article. How often to players, coaches, management, in ANY sport visit a town and sign a contract on the initial visit. Very rarely. There’s still a week to go before Hlomgren’s quote/unquote deadline, so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal that he left town without a deal. It’s looking like Seattle wants no part of him (so far) so the Browns may get him at a cheaper rate in the end.

Bosh in Cleveland would make me happier than a teenage girl at a Jonas Brothers concert. But it’s not going to happen unless:
    A. Toronto & Bosh become so dysfunctional together and they trade him during the season (very unlikely).
    B. Lebron resigns with Cleveland. No one, let alone a big name FA, is coming here not knowing what #23 is going to do this summer.

No Logo Needed needs to calm down.

Also, I’ve been wondering for a couple of weeks if there’s a countdown clock on Jay Triano’s job. Chris Bosh, Andrea Bargnani, Hedo Turkoglu, Jose Calderon and the Raptors still have a losing record with Bosh getting ready to opt out in a few months. At least they’ll still have Reggie Evans to grab all the loose balls…

So, Lerner should have locked him in the Berea facility, I guess.

Holmgren will have plenty of suitors, and Lerner’s only “leverage” is Holmgren’s claim that he wants to make a decision now. If he changes his mind about timing, no more leverage. Holmgren knows what he’s doing. A decade ago he parlayed his SB rings into full control and big money in Seattle.

In any case, we should all relax. The Browns are again throwing themselves at a guy who has been a success at a position other than the position they are trying to fill. We don’t know if he’s the best choice, we just know that he is the best currently available candidate to fulfill this year’s key phrase “experienced and credible.” By the end of next season, the new key phrase may be “talent evaluation.” We have no idea if this is the right guy for us.

While we’re waiting: ESPN reports that Bengals WR Chris Henry has died this morning. He was 26.

I’ve been one of the more pro-Holmgren guys on this site, but now I have to wonder a bit: why does Seattle apparently want no part of him? Wouldn’t that be a slam dunk for them? He knows more about their roster and its strengths and weaknesses, as well as their coaching staff, than anyone.

Agree that NLN needs to chill a bit. Handing him a blank check at that point would smack of desperation a bit, and there’s still the Rooney Rule to comply with. But by next week, I have a feeling that Holmgren will be in place and the countdown to Mangini’s (glorious) firing will begin in earnest. Then again, with Lerner being a complete “delta bravo” (as my midshipmen love to say), he would be the type to just lose him without so much as a whimper.

    @DP

I think it has to do with the level of authority Holmgrem is asking for. In Seattle, they have a functional organization that has just been decimated by injuries and a couple of bad picks; nothing to panic about and no need for a “czar” to rework everything. In Cleveland, we hav

Phil Martelli is one of my favorite CBB coaches. Great representative for the A10 too. Hopefully Delonte finds some comfort in the conversation he had with Martelli.

Vince – it’s all over the internet now. Always a sad state of affairs when someone passes way before their time.
