Russell Branyan’s Addition Will Impact Younger Players
February 24, 2010Report: Zydrunas Ilgauskas Agrees to Buyout with Wizards

He’s a forward on paper: “LeBron is on pace to not just break [the assists by a forward] mark, but shatter it – almost a full assist per game ahead of Larry Legend’s best single-season mark. Also, note that only one of the top nine forward assists-per-game seasons was accomplished in fewer minutes per game than James’ 39.0 so far this season (Bird, ’90-91, 38.0).” [The Painted Area]

With the seventh pick… “With outstanding ball-hawking skills, 4.35 speed and an excellent ability to diagnose what’s being thrown his way, [Joe] Haden has all the tools. No true freshman corner had ever started a game for the Gators until Haden did it, and he went on to start 40- games in three seasons. Haden plays zone well, but his primary attribute — and this is one that has become more visible and prevalent with the rise of Darrelle Revis(notes) — is the ability to trail a receiver in straight-line man coverage.” [Doug Farrar/Shutdown Corner]

But what if he jumps while throwing? “[Tim Tebow’s] current slinging motion was enough to land him two National Championships, a Heisman Trophy, a Davey O’Brien Award, a Walter Camp Award, three SEC Offensive Player of the Year Awards, an AP Player of the Year Award, two Maxwell Awards, two SEC Championships, and three All-America honors, among many other accolades.
Apparently that has not been enough, as league scouts have reportedly asked for more from the do-no-wrong 22 year old who likes to spend his spare time helping orphaned children in foreign countries or assisting in the rehabilitation of inmates who are trying to turn around their lives. It has been determined that the elongated throwing motion that has helped the Florida Gators win so many games over the past four years will enable the extremely fast defensive ends and linebackers of the NFL to get to Tebow before he even has a chance to say “Go Gators”.” [Alex/Eleven Warriors]

It wasn’t long after he was traded that Antawn Jamison flashed back to the last time he was in Cleveland. He would be excused if the memory caused him to get cold chills. Because that game came the day after Gilbert Arenas had pulled the “pretend pistol” act in Washington’s pregame huddle in Philadelphia, the “pretend pistol” act that caused NBA commissioner David Stern to suspend Arenas and say he was not mentally or emotionally fit to play. With Arenas gone and the Wizards in Cleveland, Jamison was left to try to explain things for his team.” [Pat McManamon/NBA FanHouse]

And finally, a few quick points about Denny’s favorite sports event: The NFL Draft. [Major League Jerk]

And yes, we’re aware of the news regarding Zydrunas Ilgauskas. No need to hijak as we’ll have more on that at 10AM…

The logic behind the draft is flawed, TeBow should be a high first rounder.
If he were to throw the jump pass more, I’m sure he’d be drafted as high as Cavs Dude would like.

Ken Dorsey
Just say No to Tebow -> t-shirt’d
Gino Torretta agrees.
Mike Leach thinks you’re stupid for not agreeing
I cant stand the logic that says draft the player you think will have the most success going forward. Outrageous!
Run-first quarterbacks that win a bunch of awards always have tons of success in the NFL. Just ask Eric Crouch!
No mention of Jackson and Green moving over to the D-league?

If Tebow can fix his throwing motion he will be a successful NFL quarterback. He’s currently improving the throwing motion now. The problem is muscle memory and his arm is used to dropping the ball to his hip, which I’m assuming he’s done since middle school. He has all of the intangibles you would want in a quarterback. Great character, natural leader, hard worker, smart… The only thing holding Gm’s back is the thing he’s is currently working restlessly on fixing… If he fixes the arm motion, and he will, I would be proud to have Tebow on the Browns… just not with the 7th pick, that pick is reserved for Joe Haden
Oh, and his throwing motion will not be 100% fixed by the draft, it may take a season or two until he is able to do it under pressure in an actual NFL game..
“Great character, natural leader, hard worker, smart”
– Sounds like a good special teams player to me.
“he only thing holding Gm’s back is the thing he’s is currently working restlessly on fixing…”
– A little thing called throwing? Naw, don’t worry about a thrower throwing. He’s got moxy and chutzpah in spades!

my favorite Tebow defense is ever-present there…
how dare you question his football skills…he helps orphan children in his spare time!
No, great character, natural leader, hard worker, and smart are the things you want your QB to be. Tom Brady, Peyton and ESPN new favorite Drew Brees all fall under these categories.. I don’t think anybody confuses Josh Cribbs with a Rhodes Scholar… and he’s a special teamer… Oh and your boy Brady Quinn graduated from Notre Dame with two degrees in 3.5 years… Cribbs didn’t do that, neither did Devin Hester.
Ben, don’t let your hate for Tebow beating OSU. Or your overall dislike for him affect your thinking.
You can fix a delivery, you can’t fix Gilbert Arenas syndrome or Dez Bryantitis. He’ll be a project.. but he will be an NFL quarterback
Im with you MattyFos.. Sign me up for Tebow as long as its not with out 7th pick.
Let someone else take a risk on Tebow sheesh the last thing the Cleveland Browns need is another project especially at QB.
@15 mgbode that was a good one indeed but I think he’s also a Christian which automatically elevates him too.
It would have to be a low pick for me to sign on and I doubt Tebow will be there in the later rounds.
I wouldn’t use either of our first two picks on Tim Tebow, we have positions in dire need of an upgrade.. CB, LB, right G/T, WR, but if he’s available late in the second I would consider bundling two of our 3’s to get him. Or wait until the third.
But he helps people in jail! And he is so dreamy!!
A few things. I don’t understand how some people use his faith and religion to talk badly about Tim Tebow. I get it, you don’t like him. He kicked the crap out of most teams he played against in college, OSU included. You don’t like his jump passes. You don’t like his eye black. You may think he’s phony. You mocked him after he cried during the last seconds of the SEC championship game. There are quite a few things not to like about him. His arm strength, his delivery, his spread offense background. But none of those things should include his faith and the great things he does during the offseason. I’m looking at you JM, Boogey, and mgbode. If you want to act like you know at least a little bit about the game of football, then try to knock his football abilities, not just his personal faith.
There is also the thing about reading a defense and progressing quickly through your options which Peyton, Brady, Brees and some others are fantastic at. There is no indication TeBow is capable of this either.

Swig, not a lot of college Quarterbacks have that style of passing game in NCAA. The college game has a lot of pre-determined passes. You’re playing against teams that have significant holes in their defense and teams usually exploit those. If teams didn’t have holes, then you’d have all 11 players from every defense getting drafted. The NFL is where you need to focus on reading the coverages, the players are all on the same level athletically and usually football intellectually.
So, just because Tebow was never asked to do that in college that doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t able to do that in the next level. Again, this is something that any Rookie would need to get accustomed to. This is why most people agree that Rooks (QBs) are better sitting their first year. Get used to the speed, watch the coverages, wear your hat and get the playbook terminology down.
We’re talking about a kid who had a 67% completion percentage against SEC defenses. Not the porous Big 12 defenses or the slow Big Ten defenses. The SEC has tons of defensive talent.
@MattyFos I’ll speak for myself since you called me out but not the others. I referenced Tebow’s fate because it was brought up by others including the media for what reason I do not know as I feel it has no place in the discussion of him as a football. This is what I was attempting to demonstrate in a mocking way sorry if it didn’t translate. I could care less whether Tim Tebow is an atheist or if he is a born again Christian neither has a place in sports or more importantly assessing Tebow which I believe you have stated yourself. However since it’s been jammed down my throat by the media and others it would be hypocritical for these same people to disallow me to mention it.
As far as Tebow’s athletic abilities go while they might suit him well in college the NFL is completely different and there are numerous examples of collegiate stars like Tebow at the QB position who disappear from the NFL quickly. The comment about OSU (I’m assuming you meant Ohio State and not Oklahoma State) is misplaced because I could care less what he did or didn’t do verse the Buckeyes. I personally think it had more to do with his teammates then Tebow specifically but like I said it doesn’t matter.
Matty, you have potential vs a huge list of questions about the ability to move up. Some (most) people try really hard and never succeed at a professional level.
I think we should stay away from all QBs on day one for the reasons you mentioned. Drafting a QB who has shown zero ability to make quick reads and throws just because he is trying hard is preposterous.
MattyFos, Tebow has “been working on” that passing motion since he was a freshman. Florida knew it was an issue when he was recruited out of high school, knew it was an issue for his FUTURE success when he won the Heisman, and knew it in the two years since. That’s why UF has purported to run more under center plays, solely to help Tebow with his draft stock.
Now, if the coaches and everyone in the US has known for four years that his throwing motion would present a problem down the road, and those coaches have purportedly worked on it for years, and it hasn’t improved in any measurable way, why on earth would you think that only a year of NFL practices would be enough to change that?
Also, love that Lebron forward article. When I read it yesterday I thought to myself “I bet this shows up on WFNY tomorrow.”
