2010 NFL Draft: Round 1, Pick 7 – Joe Haden, CB – Florida
April 22, 2010While We’re Waiting… Watching LeBron, Indians’ Offense, and a Second-Day Mock
April 23, 2010After all the speculation and news, both real and imagined, the moment finally arrived. The Browns have officially missed out on Eric Berry as he went fifth to the Kansas City Chiefs. The good news is that the pre-draft lying rumblings that had Mike Holmgren trading everything he had for Sam Bradford were also wrong as Bradford went to the Rams. At that point, my initial thought was that the Browns ought to trade down as fast as they could and try to gain picks and put themselves in a position to take someone like Taylor Mays in the latter part of the first round.
The Browns selected Joe Haden cornerback from Florida. I know for a lot of Browns fans, the Haden selection is a bit like kissing your sister because he isn’t Eric Berry. Still, with the trades this off-season, and now the selection of Haden, the Browns have presumably upgraded the heck out of their defensive secondary.
Stay tuned Browns fans. As these quarterbacks continue to fall, it is quite possible the Browns could make a move to get back into the first round. And how funny would that be for all you anti-logic types who will say that “this is exactly like when they took Brady Quinn, so it is destined to fail!!!!”
I will save that post for later if it is needed. For now, the Browns have drafted Joe Haden and we won’t have to worry about Brandon McDonald as a starter opposite Eric Wright next year. At this rate, we might not even need to worry about B-Mac playing the nickel. We certainly won’t have to worry about Terry Cousin or any of his subsequent lookalikes.

HE’S NO TIM TEBOW
This is a great pick. He and Eric Wright will be real nice with Sheldon Brown also. This is great for our secondary and we could still get a starting safety in the 2nd round.
I love it. Our corners are set for the future. Once Haden get’s the feel of the game and develops, we could have a very nice defense against Matt Ryan, Palmer, and whoever is starting for Pittsburgh.
Don’t mind the Haden pick, but it tells me the Browns were unable to move back and accumulate picks. Looks like we may see Sheldon Brown at Safety a bit next year.
Haden is a solid pick. A few more picks on the defensive side works for me.
Browns probably didn’t get an offer they liked enough to move back…nobody close did either.
Where we were, Haden’s not a bad bet at all.
meh. i would rather have taken Earl Thomas.
The browns have cornered the market (no pun intended) on short secondary players. Can’t wait til either of the smurfs have to match up with Boldin.
@7 agreed 101.5%
@9&7
Why he may play CB himself
sheldon brown didnt play any safety in philly. they must see a safety they like in later rounds.
Nate Allen?
No to Nate Allen. They should go Taylor Mays if he’s there.
Mays is still on the board…..I know he had an off year, but you can’t teach physical gifts…..you can teach someone not to overpursue….this will be an interesting dynamic with a night between the 1st and 2nd rounds…I’m expecting plenty of trades
As am I Reep as am I
I think it’s a solid pick. The Browns probably wanted to trade down after Berry didn’t fall, but couldn’t move. They could have done a lot worse. Still a big hole at the safety position though, so we’ll see how the rest of this shakes out. Maybe the Browns trade a pick for an RFA?
Day 2 will be very interesting…
I’m with Eli
As for the Quinn trade, I never liked it but I’ll save that comment for later if it’s needed.
Mays if available would be a steal but our offense needs a playmaker
This was a great pick. After all Sheldon Brown is 31 and while starting material he is not a top shelf CB. Haden has the ability to be a Revis. Claussen, McCoy or Mays in the 2nd round!
So who do we go for in round 2?
Its too hard to tell. Golden Tate? McCoy? Allen? a tackle?
I still dont want Clausen. I hope Minnesota takes him with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round. As for Haden… Im not pumped about this pick, but Im not upset either. We have made a position of weakness one of our strengths this offseason and you cant be mad about that.
Tomorrow I would hope for Sergio Kindle or Taylor Mays (tho I bet Eagles take him right before) but then you could also get a OT or something. Fully expect them to just go bpa so I guess ill sit back and watch.
Now that we see how many other Corners were picked, I think I like the Haden pick even more. If we had picked someone else, we couldn’t have picked another CB with similar skills. Now we still have Sergio Kindle, Taylor Mays, Claussen, McCoy, still sitting there. I enjoyed the 1st round.
I think that we’re in win win mode. QB-McCoy and Claussen, RT-Saffold, Brown, and Campbell, DEOLB-Kindle and Dunlap, S-Mays, WR-Tate. Any one of these guys fills a position of need. Sickest move ever would be to move down 5 spots and maybe pick up a first next year. I was heart broken losing out on Berry, but time to move on and I now consider CB a position of strength.
hoping for Clausen, Mays, Kindle in that order… Clausen is a steal in the 2nd…
kindle = this year’s maualuga steal?? damn i want a crunching linebacker. babich, ambrose, banks, and of course matthews. yes i’m old school. it’s been too long.
of course a crunching safety (mays) works too. crazy that this guys wouldve been top 10 if he’d com out last year.
and i prefer clausen over mccoy. johnny damon has a better arm… no spread QBs please.
let’s see.. also wouldn’t mind a big Haitian OG, ducasse from UMass. the right side of the line was a trainwreck last year and as to the pashos signing; i was sold a bill of goods on stclair last year so color me skeptical.
put it this way — no way holmgren/rickert pick robiskie here.
No thanks on ND QB part deux but I like the
idea of Taylor Mays. The next round and round
three should be where we see what the plans
are for the season.
Taylor Mays and Joe Haden would make the draft an A+ for the Browns. Ride the year out with Delhome and worry about a QB next year!
Across the secondary we could have Haden, Brown, Taylor Mays and Wright. Then you get McDonald back in the nickle where he belongs, Mike Adams as the 3rd safety/4th CB and Dan LeFevour getting ready to start in 1-2 years.
I’ll take it.
I have a good feeling about this kid
Sounds like the Taylor Mays band-wagon is back in full effect. Sheldon Brown-Abe Elam a more likely safety combo this year works for me… veteran group roaming the back line. I’d pass on any LBs too in round 2 and snatch the top DT or OL… Our defensive line is OLD!
Just because all of the so-called experts have us taking clausen or mccoy doesn’t mean the Browns should draft a QB this year. At least not in the second round. Ideally, I would want them to take a big tackle for the right side and then trade back into the second to grab Mays. The cost should be a couple of picks in the third and fifth rounds. Then take a flier on LeFevour in one of the later rounds.
As for Haden, not a sexy pick but very solid.
Welcome to Cleveland Joe!
That’s 3 years in a row that we’ve made a “not sexy but very solid” first round pick. We could use a bit more luck in the 2nd – 4th rounds, but this is how you build the core of your team.
I know it’s mostly Holmgren in charge, but don’t forget Mangini still has a good amount of say in this draft – and he did draft Darrelle Revis. The more I think about this pick the more I like it.
dont take for granted that Mays is there when the browns pick. The eagles pick right before them and need a safety. I would look for Nate Allen from USF if they go safety, would love to see Sergio Kindle there tho. I too doubt the need for a QB so high.
Today we get a shot at our future QB. i’ll be happy with McCoy, Pike, or Le”Fever.” Haden seems like a stretch for #7 but hopefully he’ll prove me wrong. No more Gators! If we get Tebow I’ll be bent over a toilet later tonight. Other than that we need to continue adding to our defense. What college players deserve to have a Browns Superbowl ring?
If Taylor Mays is available in the second and we draft Colt McCoy I will lose all faith in Holmgren…..
WE NEED A SAFETY….it’s our biggest glaring need.
I was hoping for Berry/Thomas….but I can live with Haden….PLEASE PICK TAYLOR MAYS IF HE ISN’T GONE….PLEASE!
@37….did you not watch the draft last night?
Um, Tim Tebow was already drafted by the Broncos…it was kinda a big deal…
That’s hilarious, in the first round? I must have been distracted…
