I’m hoping to see us grab Freddie Barnes (total homer pick im a bgsu alum…sue me), and Jameson Konz today. C’mon Brownies!

  • 2. April 24, 2010

Danario Alexander would be a nice get at WR, then maybe a guy like Dekoda Watson from FSU or even Jamar Cheney at LB. Of course, anyone with the name Jameson is worth pursuing (Kent State guys have done alright for us, I’d say), and Freddie Barnes was a terror against my Flashes last year. Should be an interesting day.

I’m crushed. Ed Wang was just picked by Buffalo. I was hoping we would pick him up. We clearly need more Wang on our team.

If we were going to take a safety I would have rather had Myron Rolle there. He’s going to be great.

Orrrrr, another safety. I have to admit, this one leaves me scratching my head, unless they think he can take over for Elam in a few years.

We picked that guy IMMEDIATELY after the clock started.

    Larry Asante file

They have him rated 159th overall, and we picked him 160th. So, WE GOT VALUE!!!

    13. April 24, 2010

I agree DP, I was not expecting more in that area. You’re not going to get a #1 WR at this point. But you might find a run stopper this late.

I really worry about what the rest of our division is doing in the front 7 so I’d like to see us get Faneca in free agency by the end of the day. Hopefully there is a phone in that Closet we’ve locked mangini in this weekend.

    On Asante from NFL.com

“Asante was a productive, three-year starter for the Cornhuskers. He has a good combination of strength and athleticism for the safety position. He doesn’t have ideal height but makes up for it with toughness and aggressive play. He is a solid reactor but tends to be more productive as a run defender than vs. the pass. He doesn’t have natural leaping ability when going after the ball in traffic and appears to have average hands to make the sure interception. He is a willing run-support player who is usually a solid open-field tackler. Asante has limitations that likely will relegate him to a backup role and core special teams contributor.”

  • Gren
    17. April 24, 2010

I like the Asante move. After having Mike Furrey as our starting Safety last year, we cannot have enough depth at that position.

Faneca was released by the Jets…

Cripes…. he ran THE slowest 40 time in the combine for a safety. 4.79

    33. April 24, 2010

I think Lagarrette Blount would be a good last pick for us(Since the LB’s on the board won’t impact us, I don’t think) I think he is really gunna be a player in the NFL!

  • subadai
    34. April 24, 2010

Yeah… I thought Blount would be gone by now. I doubt we take him cause we traded up to get a big back already.

  • tom

yeah that WR is a good steal!

  • subadai
    36. April 24, 2010

I’d like to see a DL … Travis Ivey or Brandon Deadrick… we need some beef.

  • Jorey
    37. April 24, 2010

Yeah that trade up still sorta confuses me. But I’m sure they see things I don’t! I didn’t think we needed a RB in the first place, I thought Jennings was shaping up to be very good. Maybe we go for another Receiver, Seyi Ajirotutu out of Fresno maybe? Though if there’s a Fitzgerald type, plucks the ball out of the air 90+% of the time, on the board I think that could be worth a shot.

  • subadai
    38. April 24, 2010

I wouldn’t mind doubling up on WR since we have to make up for wasting a 2nd rounder on Robiskie last season. Or maybe ILB Jmar Chaney.

As far as the trade… I think heckert and Holmgren thought Seattle was gonna take Hardesty, and the clearly wanted him.

  • Jorey
    39. April 24, 2010

    Brandon Lang?

  • Jorey
    40. April 24, 2010

@38 – i think Chaney can improve and become a good LB as well.

I was sort of thinking the same thing for Seattle, except I honestly thought it was to trade up and get McCoy.

Overall I think we had a lot of good picks, for the position our picks were in. Now let’s go get Faneca and complete the offseason :P

Gren – I kind of laughed, because under ‘read more’ on that page they listed the tag word “trouble”.

  • S-Dub
    48. April 24, 2010

I like our draft. Haden is a starter, Ward will probably start, Asante can contribute on special teams for sure. Carlton Mitchell might be a TO/Brandon Marshall type of steal at WR. Hardesty is a guy who can be a feature back in a year or two. Geathers can be a body to play the 3-4 end spot. I’d like to see the Browns actually develop this guard into a starter. And, Obviously, we all hope McCoy can be THE guy. B+ draft for now Browns.

  • subadai
    49. April 24, 2010

Well… Well… I think we got a shutdown corner and a solid big back that will contribute immediately. Added an in the box safety. QB of the future (again). Depth on the OL. Depth at S. Depth at WR. Depth on DL.

So… Brandon McDonald is out of the CB rotation now. We have a nice 3 back rotation at RB. Added secondary toughness. St. Clair will probably be cut in camp (Gods be praised). Have a WR to go opposite Massaquoi. And competition at all other positions.

So next year, we MAY be more competetive and in next years draft we can probably take the best player available strategy.

  • b
    50. April 24, 2010

that Geathers mug shot is fantastic. I was not happy with the RB pick initially, but if they work him in with Harrison AND hillis, it could really work. I’m on board with absolutely everything else, even with past injury concerns. I think out of our 8 picks, we got 5 starters in 2010, with McCoy, Geathers and the Guard starting in 2011.
Next year we go DL, OL, LB in the first 3 rounds and really get things into place.

  • The Other Tim
    51. April 24, 2010

What about what’s his name from last year’s draft at RB? Will he available to practice IN PADS this season?

  • jimkanicki
    52. April 24, 2010

i’ve like other draft and been wrong… so i’m not loving this draft and that bodes well for us.

haden.. actually i like him a lot more now. 2time state champ PG in basketball? 3time state champ QB in football? back injury at combine? will convince lebron to to stay? YES! @joehaden5 now being followed. (probable starter)
tj ward.. one pick after nate allen? smells panicky and/or a miss concerning reading what the other teams in queue are doing. (probable starter)
hardesty.. we gave up two #5s for ‘Multiple knee injuries sidelined Hardesty so often that he had six starts in 36 games heading into last season.’?? seems like a guy you let fall to you. remember that we could have had ducasse at this slot.. so we passed on an OG good enough to retire faneca on second best team in afc. (not a starter)
mccoy.. i think holmgren felt guilty about the smoke he blew up everyone’s -youknow-. look at his film, no arm. i understand brian sipe had a weak arm but he was drafted #12. (will probably never start)
lavaou.. no idea, but glad we have some help on the line. (not a starter)
    asante… no idea.
mitchell.. he looks AWESOME. (probable starter)
    geathers.. he’s big (possible cut)

just felt like rickert did exactly what he said he wouldnt do: reach.

    I give it a B- for 3 starters. :-)

I stopped watching Mitchell’s YouTube after two minutes of the same [bleeping] play over and over again… against Western Kentucky. Yawn.

  • bobby
    54. April 24, 2010

I like the Mitchell pick. I bet he sees more field then Robo.. or at least more then Robo did as a rookie.

If I had to grade… Maybe a B- as of now. Nothing spectacular really. Haden may start. Ward has a good chance to start. thats it for now tho. Mitchell hopefully turns into a possession guy that can get YAC. Geathers has the body to succeed… but I doubt hes a huge part of our D until year 3. Asante and the OG are up in the air for me right now. McCoy should be starting next year. Hardesty could get playing time. I still hope Harrison gets at least 20 carries a game.

  • S-Dub
    55. April 24, 2010

What a lot of people aren’t realizing is that Hardesty can catch the ball out of the backfield like a WR. Actually, at Tenn they lined him up at WR quite often. Think about a wildcat formation with Harrison and Cribbs in the backfield with Seneca, Hardesty, and Delhomme (only cause he has to be there) out at WR, with Watson lined up at TE. That’s a lot of flexibility for our passing game and wildcat formation that is supposed to be expanded this year.

Anyone else surprised that Kurt Coleman lasted until the 7th?

  • jimkanicki
    57. April 24, 2010

@s-dub – just to be clear, i dont dislike hardesty, but i’m not convinced he was worth two 5s. ditto with tj. just felt like we weren’t savvy managing the board. BUT… i’m 100% certain they did better evaluating talent than last year. and that’s what counts.

is anyone else shocked we took Lauvao when we could have had Bruce Campbell?

  • Stan
    59. April 24, 2010

my comment is lengthy but worth the look, thnx to those who read it

Alright, so heres my input on our draft…
Joe Haden-Great pick, before all the Berry-hype, this was the guy every1 in Cleveland wanted…now we have our Revis-type CB

TJ Ward- I predicted Taylor Mays at #38, but basically i was just predicting a hard-hitting safety and didnt realize there was one besides Mays, i think he will start at FS in Game 1…Hes Dawkins like (hard worker, hard hitter, has cover ability when needed). In a yr or 2, we should compare his stats w/ T.Mays! lol

Hardesty- I like the pick, he has Jamal Lewis type ball carrier vision; when he finds that hole, he bursts thru it, bounces off one tackle, then schools the db’s and gets to the endzone…i just wish we woulda given up our 3rd 5th rounder, not the 1st 5th

Colt McCoy- GREATEST THING THAT COULDA HAPPENED TO THE BROWNS FOR ECONOMIC REASONS…he will not be getting payed tons of money while he is sitting for the yr or 2, which he wouldve at #38

Lauvao- Oline depth is never bad…i think i could agree that Bruce Campbell also mightve been good b/c of his potential, BUT Lauvao has played at LT, LG, and RG. Versitility=Mangini, Heckert

The last 3 are good cuz of what they bring. Asante brings depth, ST production, and a hopeful future starter. Mitchell is big, Edwards w/ hopefully less dropped balls and wayyy less the risk. Geather is f***ing 6’7″ish and around 300lbs, if u havent noticed, thats big! (he could end up being good, tipping alotta passes and maybe blocking some field goals.

  • b
    60. April 24, 2010

@s-dub, i always wondered why they bother to line the QB out wide in a wildcat where the cribbs type player taking the snap is a legit threat to pass or run. put another receiver or blocker out there to be useful. although i do remember BQ making the catch of his life in that very situation last year, so maybe it’s worth the one out of 50 times you go to the QB

  • S-Dub
    61. April 24, 2010

@b: It’s some weird NFL rule that states that if the QB is taken out in that situation that he can’t be brought back into the game. So, when every team runs their wildcat they have to split their QB our as a WR. And, sometimes it pays off such as it did with BQ last year.

  • 62. April 24, 2010

Not surprising all the love being shown –
keep hope alive because it’s all you have!

  • Team Wallace
    63. April 24, 2010

Hardesty was a terrible pick. they have Harrison, Hillis, and Davis (and Jennings.) Unnecessary and a reach.

Anyway, overall, I’d grade it a C+/B- draft. Something better could have been done with the Hardesty pick and then Blount could have been taken with the last pick, but I feel better about the secondary going into next year.

I’m excited to see what Ward, McCoy, Asante, Mitchell, and Geathers become over the next 2-3 years.

  • subadai
    64. April 25, 2010

The more I dig into this the more I REALLY like Mitchell. I think he can be the guy that blows the top of the coverage for us.

Also, I think Hardesty is going to be huge. My only concern is his health, but, being a Browns fan, I have that concern about every draft pick… whether he has an injury history or not. Fact is, this is a clear sign that Jennings is a goner after his arrest. Hardesty has WAY more upside anyway. I know we all love Harrison, but fact is, in our division, you have to have a big back. Everything else hinges on that. Hilis is not that. He is the West Coast fullback. Good pass catcher. Good in pass pro. The bulk of the carries will go to Hardesty and Harrison with those carries split 60/40. Harrison will still have his big plays though. Davis will be the depth guy. This situation could grow into something that I could love. With these guys the runing game could become the ofensive identity we havn’t had since the 80s.

  • stin4u
    65. April 25, 2010

@sub your totally correct the nfl is a two back league….my question is how do they work in Hillis and Davis…I smell practice squad for someone

  • subadai
    66. April 25, 2010

@stin4u I look at it this way. The Giants two seasons ago managed a situation where they had 3 tailbacks and a hybrid type fullback. There were carries and catches enough to go around. Also, there are always nicks and dings to deal with in the course of a 16 game season. I think, barring the unforseen, the plan would be to have all four guys play a role.

What I don’t know is how Vickers is going to fit into this. I can see situations where Hillis and one of the tailbacks are on field at the same time because he can do some things with the ball but Vickers is pretty much just a lead blocker.

It’s seems to be a good problem to have. 4 pretty good tailbacks and 2 pretty good fullbacks.
