While we continue to be inundated with the everpresent debate between Cleveland, Ohio and New York, New York, those of us that are on the Ohio side have a documentary to look forward to. More Than a Game is the title of the film which chronicles the high school careers of LeBron James as well as his friends that accompanied him on his team at Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Or, as one could also put it: Business LeBron helped create a film about Athlete LeBron, but it started while he was Kid LeBron. A very Wise LeBron move.
Combining footage taken during James’ career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in nearby Akron, along with one-on-one interviews by writer/director Kris Belman, home videos, and personal family photographs, the film is about much more than basketball. At its core is a story of friendship, loyalty and love.
Apparently, while the Irish games were being broadcasted over the ESPN airwaves, this documentary was in the making – with the assumptions being of a fruitful career for James. Needless to say, they were correct and then some.
Some familiar names will be joining James within the film, two of which are Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce; two members from James’ team in Akron as well as the 2008 Summer League roster of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Per James, he hopes that this film about the five high school basketball players will inspire those younger than he to achieve their goals.
“We set out with a goal when we were 8 and we accomplished it when we were 18,” he said. “It’s a great story and I wanted to get it out to kids that have a dream, that they should continue to go after it, believe in it and live it if they want to accomplish something.”
No word on any release around the Cleveland area after the initial premier in Toronto, Canada.
(Note: While I did not become aware of such until now, Carolyn from AndOne unearthed this news over at her blog earlier this morning. Make sure to head her way to check it out!)

LeBron James to be featured in new documentary [Associated Press]

…after the initial premier in Toronto, Canada.
This would obviously be the logical choice to release a film about a Cleveland sports hero born in Akron.
ha! my sentiment exactly.
oh, and nice LeBron Nike commercial reference – it was giggle-worthy.
The real question is will Sebastien Telfair be present at the premiere, and will he see Lebron’s film as a threat to his all-world high-school superstar video-making talents?
I would guess not, since Telfair’s was an ESPN documentary. Obviously Telfair wins there.
I heard that Telfair’s documentary was loaded with upside, but never fulfilled it’s promise. It may be alright, but I’m sticking to my guns here.
It’s premiering in Toronto because there’s an international film festival going on there. I’ll take a Canadian premiere over one in NYC or LA any day. It’ll be in Cleveland soon enough.
I can’t wait to watch this…
is this going too be an actual movie, like in theatres in all places across the U.S.
I saw this documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival and it was fantastic. It is definetely worth watching and will serve as a great motivation for any inspired athlete, coach and parent involved in sports. LeBron and the remaining members of the Fab5 were in attendance, as well as his coach and several family members. They spoke to the sold out audience and gave great commentary about their experience. Hope to see it out in theaters soon!
“LeBron and the remaining members of the Fab5 were in attendance” isn’t true because Sian Cotton wasn’t there
[...] of All Media,” I would love to know what LeBron James would be. Not all that long ago, we touched on the movie that chronicled his grade school/high school team titled More Than A Game. Of course, he has [...]
