NBA Free Agency: Zydrunas Ilgauskas Talks About His Future
May 17, 2010While We’re Waiting… Mike Brown’s Future, 2010 Draft Grades, and Calipari’s Defense
May 18, 2010Adam Schefter reported today that Matt Roth has asked the Browns for a today-
Cleveland’s restricted free-agent pass rusher Matt Roth asked the Browns today to trade him. Two sides too far apart on long-term deal.
The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot then refuted the claim, citing a league source that Roth hasn’t made the request yet–
The Browns were not immediately available for comment, but a league source said Roth has not yet asked to be traded. That could happen later today. Browns general manager Tom Heckert told the Plain Dealer in Sunday’s paper that the team is not yet negotiating with any of its unrestricted free agents.
Now, there is little else that Roth can do from a negotiating stand point when you think about it. He is a restricted free agent with a second round tag on him. That means if he signs with another team the Browns would get a second round pick from that team as compensation. Roth may have been a second round selection coming out of Iowa, but he has certainly not lived up to that status throughout his career. I don’t think it is a stretch to say that no team would be willing to give away a second rounder in order to get Roth.
Roth filled in well when he got the chance here last season, but let’s not get carried away. There were questions concerning his work ethic/truthfulness with injuries in Miami, which ultimately led to his release (yes, officially the team said performance was the final determination.) Either way, his body of work speaks for itself. It seems to me that if Roth wanted to be seriously considered for a long term contract in the future, signing the one year tender would be exactly the way to go. He would be an unrestricted free agent heading into next season. You know, prove yourself first, and then reap the benefit. I suppose that’s a bit of an old-fashioned attitude these days. How silly of me.

sigh.
twitter is the devil.
I couldn’t stop laughing when I read this.
It’s the equivalent of Sebastian Telfair demanding a trade from the Cavs. Sure, you looked good when you played but, nobodies giving up anything for you until you do it consistently.
His roster position in general isn’t even guaranteed and he want’s a long term deal. Hilarious.
Please. How many teams were lining up to sign this clown when the Dolphins released him?
At least he can’t claim the previous regime “promised” him a new contract.
@ 4 – I had the same reaction. Really, Matt Roth? Demanding a trade?
I think I am going to my boss today and demand that I be traded to an NFL team. If Matt Roth can do it, so can I.
@Gren – are you saying that Bassy is leaving us :/
@5 – Actually I believe the Browns were 3rd on the waiver wire to nab him. And that a lot of teams were interested. He graded out as the best OLB vs the run by PFF in ’09.
But a non-football related injury that he refused to come clean on, and some other personality issues, led to his release in Miami. Then Cleveland picked him up and he played great – but no one is going to sign him long-term right now. He is actually HURTING himself by doing this – because only by keeping his mouth shut and putting up good numbers were teams going to take a chance on him.
His 4 sacks were not the norm. He is primarily a run-stuffer – a damn good one – but nothing more than a run-stuffer.
Trade him for what exactly?
Can you imagine being the guy on the other end when Heckert calls? Or being that guy when Heckert can’t complete the sentence without laughing.
I think this is ridiculous like most everyone else, but with the way the nfl is set up with these contracts I can’t say I really blame the guy for trying to get something locked up…
Roth can ask but he isnt getting a trade. All of this is just a negotiation tactic. Roth has no leverage. What else can he do? Just show up and play. Roth – you have no real options.
I think this is ridiculous. What more could Roth ask for but 2 mil for this year? Who does he think he is? What gives him the right?
If Roth comes out and plays good this year he will get a good contract. I would love to get a year trial at just short of 2 mil in an attempt to break bank.
Trade him or pay him and they’ll be a bunch of guys in that locker room wanting the same.
Adam Schefter today reporting that Joe Haden is also demanding trade. Claims Mangini promised him something at his pro day, or Savage gave him a knowing nod from the stands at a junior high game, or something.
who is matt roth? seriously not trying to be funny.
Well … Bye.
“Please. How many teams were lining up to sign this clown when the Dolphins released him?”
Several – he’s a stellar OLB against the run. Just doesn’t have the leverage when there are hundreds of other RFAs looking for a contract.
An idea for a column:
Find and interview anyone on the current Browns roster who hasn’t complained about his salary and/or didn’t want to play for a better team. My guess is that there aren’t many…
I FOR ONE AM SICK AND TIRED OF MATT ROTH HOLDING THIS FRANCHISE HOSTAGE–GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE!
/LeBron’d
This should be a no-brainer for Heckert and Holmgren. The Colts called this morning, before the trade demand was even made, and offered Manning and two #1’s for Roth and Ratliff. The fact that they won’t pull the trigger because they are so damn committed to Jake Delhomme is an atrocity. Alrighty, back to the crack pipe, peace out Cleveland
Between the “experts” being way off on the NFL draft and this bufoon reporting false stories ESPN really looks credible!
I was actually looking forward to seeing him play for an entire season. You would think that he would be happy to have received a 2nd round tender after he D-bagged his way out of Miami.
The only thing he is going to get traded for is a 3rd or 4th round tender instead of a 2nd.
HEY GUYS WHAT IS HIS FORTY TIME AND ALSO HOW MUCH CAN HE BENCH PRESS.
is he even guaranteed to make the team this year?
Don’t lie, how many of you had no idea who this joker is/was?
@ Denny from #7.
No, not at all. Just needed something to compare the situation to. If Sebastian the crab were to request a trade, etc..
This is the worst part of no more basketball: we are stuck with
Indians and Browns news! One word: yuck.
4 games now gets you a long term deal. lol, that is why this guy was cut by the phins probably. He told the Tuna he wants more time and the Tuna gave him time on the street.
great comments… I actually like Roths football style wish we had some more smashmouth players… I agree the best thing he could do is sign and if he does well he can stay or leave…
[…] we discussed Matt Roth’s trade request. Last week it was Abe Elam who was requesting a long term deal, and “exploring his […]
Put him in a package deal with Lebron!
