Put Quinn In? Really?
So, I realize that the title of this post is really just a bait and switch. I am not even going to sit here and debate this. I just wanted to point out what dummies there are among us Browns fans. It is time to eat our own before they all make us look bad. I was reading the coverage of the Dallas loss and one of the first comments on the article I read stated that the Browns clearly need to put Brady Quinn in the starting lineup.
What?
How on earth can a fan of the Browns watch the Dallas game and clearly say that Brady Quinn needs to be in the starting lineup? Which part was it? Was it watching Browns linebackers not attack gaps created by double teams on Shaun Rogers? Was it Braylon dropping some nicely thrown passes? Was it the inability of the defense to cover Terrell Owens and Jason Witten? Was it watching two different running backs from Dallas scamper for 10+ yards almost at will?
At what point, exactly, do you think that Brady Quinn would have made a difference in this game?
Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t a criticism of Brady Quinn who might end up being the best quarterback for this franchise. I still believe that it is possible in the long run for Brady Quinn to be an even better on-field, decision-making QB than Derek Anderson. The key phrase there is “In the long run.”
I also know I am not speaking to a majority of you out there. The educated remember all those years with controversies involving QB’s with seriously suspect “talent.” (Spergon Wynn, anyone?) Those years were supposed to teach patience so that when the Browns did have some decent prospects at the QB position that the fans wouldn’t create unnecessary controversey. This, my friends, is one of those times.
This year’s team rides on Derek Anderson’s shoulders unless he gets hurt. And that’s the way it should be. Plus, if you want to spend your time complaining about this team, after watching Dallas dismantle the Browns, you might want to stick to something more relevant than the QB.

Well said.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:19 am
I agree Craig. Thanks for setting the impatient ones among us straight.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Both of them aren’t any older than Willie McGinest at this point
September 9th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Kosar? because i got a fever and the only cure is side arm passing
If anything watching DA in that game was one of the few high points in my opinion, he didn’t throw any picks, he scrambled nicely a few times, got rid of the ball when things looked grim, and hit his receivers with plenty of catchable passes (the receivers catching these passes is of course an entirely different story).
Maybe the person making that comment was Brady’s agent hoping to land a few more endorsement deals for him, I always liked the subway commercial last year where they say Brady will deliver your subs on Sunday and Quinn replies “guys, i’m kind of busy on Sundays”. Busy doing what? Getting Anderson his water bottle? Organizing the bench by alphabetical and numerical order to pass the time? Surely he has the time to bring me a couple of tasty sandwiches before donning the clip board and manning the cappuccino maker for the coaching staff on Sunday afternoon.
Quinn may be the second coming of quarterback, but we’ve got a pretty good one right now so there is no reason to switch.

exactly, DA is the man. if he goes 0-4 or 0-5 then you can start the debate. (although it would help DA out if he could get some defensive help)
September 9th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Ask Minnesota if they’d like to have DA. Their QB killed any chance of them winning last night.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:58 am
There were a couple passes last night that Jackson threw that were beyond head-scratchers. I was looking at the TV screen wondering how he expected to hit a receiver with 5 defenders between him and the receiver.

Bring back Booty
September 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Lmao some browns fans are crazy. I know a osu fan who keeps screaming put pryor in. No patience
September 9th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Guess the colts should bench peyton huh? Seahawks should bench matt. No quarterback who missed games in the pre-season did good.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Bench Tom Brady!
Oh, wait.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Couldnt be more right. I hate people who have Brady mancrushes…DA All the Way!
September 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Can Quinn play defense?
We need some linebackers.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I hear Tim Couch might be looking to make a comeback….
September 9th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Hoy nailed it on the head, watching DA was the only positive that I saw on Sunday. Good, smart throws and was able to stay on his feet. Now it didn’t help that the only WR he threw to in the first half was Braylon and he dropped over half those passes, he needs to get used to the others first.
As for Quinn, I look forward to having Minnesota, Detorit or Chicago’s first round pick next year for him.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Maybe BQ has the speed to play corner?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:18 am
I’m the biggest supporter of Quinn being our QB of the future, but I agree, playing him now does not improve our team. I don’t think DA is going to be able to take us where we want to go, but right now, neither is Brady. This team needs to get a whole lot better before any QB can take them anywhere. Might as well let DA take the lumps while Brady learns from the sidelines.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Problems on Sunday:
1. Defense.
2. Braylon Edwards.
400. Derek Anderson.
You nailed it: Some Browns fans are certifiably insane.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:43 am
This unfounded Quinn love completely baffles me. Is it because we’ve spend the last decade waiting for next year, for the next big thing? The key in any sport is consistency, not changing direction every time you see something shiny and new.
Besides, Horse Balls is such a cool nickname.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Word i’d trade brady to the vikings for a 1st round pick. Derek is better than brady and always will be in this offense because he can throw the ball a mile and the browns have deep threats.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
QB situation was far from the problem on Sunday. Offense sucked, d-line sucked, there was no pass coverage, stupid penalties by guys who know better (Braylon) Other than the missed snapped DA looked pretty good for a guy who just two weeks prior suffered a concussion. What was Braylons excuse… we had too much time off… whatever… if i remember correctly DA came into the second game last year with little playing time and nailed everyone… what do have to say about the Braylon? If the ball hits your hands CATCH IT!!! And please tell me Cribbs will be back in next week… Steptoe will get stepped on by the yintzers. Sorry Quin lovers but not even him can fix the problems because from i see it’s so much as QB problem as it’s a Browns need to get there sh** together problem as a whole.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
I think the OSU calls for Pryor are different because in College one loss is huge, and 2 pretty much takes you out of the running for a shot at the championship. Also I would say hes been hyped a bit more than BQ (at least recently).
I fully support a return of Booty.

Doug Pederson anyone?
September 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
i think eric zeier’s really earned his chance.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Don Strock is just sitting by his phone twiddling his thumbs…
September 9th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Anderson sure wasn’t perfect. Some of his throws were awful, but he wasn’t the problem. BQ can sit for a while longer. BQ will not be traded from the Browns at the end of the year….DA will
September 9th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Gary Danielson to keep the seat warm for a while and then be his “mentor” and BFF. Or, if Gary likes his current gig better, Paul McDonald. He never really got a fair shot here with a decent receivers, right?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Spurgeon Wynn!
September 9th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
We know Vinny is available…
I think we can all agree who has the speed and talent to play in our secondary…Rickey Henderson.
Seriously though, what about trading Brady Quinn to Minnesota for Robert Ferguson, one of their corners and a second round pick? May be a steep price for Minnesota but they think they can win this year, but not with Jackson
September 9th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
As soon as Quinn is in they’ll be chanting D.A. or Dor-sey. The backup QB is always one of the most popular athletes in Cleveland.
September 9th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
If anyone ever chants for Dorsey, they should be immediately banned from Browns stadium for life.
September 9th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
While I’m not advocating playing Quinn, when and why did people start think DA was good? I’d say average at best. On a good day.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Last year, being his first as a starter…I think he did ok, no?
September 9th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I think maybe it was the 29 TDs and 7 wins at home last season as a first-year starter that led some people to think this kid was worth giving a shot.
Crazy, I know.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I’d say average. Failed miserably the last couple games, threw a ton of INT’s and incompletions, missed the playoffs. I call that average. But then again I have higher standards than most Cleveland fans. They seem to accept average for some reason.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
In this day and age of the NFL where Jon Kitna has a mortal lock on a starting job and Kyle Orton can find himself in the starting lineup and Matt Leineart loses his gig, and Alex Smith never lives up to billing, and Chad Pennington and Joey Harrington are still on rosters, I think you can consider DA “good.”
How about that for a run-on sentence?
We all know the elite guys. Derek Anderson is in that category of “good” players because he has shown flashes of “slightly more than goodness” but lacks all kinds of consistency and flashiness to be considered truly great.
Then again, he is basically a redshirt sophomore, so there is still hope.
Peyton Manning is one of the top two QB’s in the league. In his rookie year, 1998, he threw for 3739 yards, 26 TD’s, 28 INT’s, for a rating of 71.2
Last year Derek Anderson (first year as a starter) threw for 3787 yards, 29 TD’s, 19 INT’s for a rating of 82.5
Obviously, I am not saying that DA is Peyton Manning, but I am saying it is actually a pretty decent year as a first-time starter.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
The only possible logic would be that after losing our first (two?) game(s), the season is a washout, so we should start getting Quinn ready for next season and beyond.
If 0-1 becomes 0-4, you can bet on hearing a lot more voices calling for BQ.
Ugh.
September 9th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
The hell with Quinn – let’s put in Jimmy Clausen!
I heard he’s gonna win 4 Heismanzzz!!!!
Also, I hate Lebronnnn cuz he’s goin to New York n I love the Yankeeees!
People are retarded.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
If DA plays as well as last year I think that there is a decent chance BQ is the one to get traded. Brady manages the game really well, but when he tries to throw deep its a rainbow. NFL caliber DB’s can pick those off with ease. Derek has the arm to go deep, which works well with players like Braylon, Winslow and even Stallworth.
If Joe J were to be around for a few more years or if we pick up a possesion reciever I think Brady would have a better shot. I dont see this happening so I can see us sticking with Derek for the next decade.
September 10th, 2008 at 10:23 am
The Cowboys scored four touchdowns on their first six drives.
Romo also threw an interception inside the Browns 10 and took a knee and their 13. The Cowboys could have scored 40 points.
Unless DA or Quinn can stop that, not real sure that is the problem.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
“If DA plays as well as last year I think that there is a decent chance BQ is the one to get traded. Brady manages the game really well, but when he tries to throw deep its a rainbow. NFL caliber DB’s can pick those off with ease.”
This thought gives me shudders.
Does ANYONE calling for BQ watch Chargers games? I can’t handle a QB that consistently lofts floaty passes that fall 5 yds short. It baffles me that he’s not picked off every time he throws a “bomb”.
September 11th, 2008 at 12:38 am
In a few weeks many will be calling for Quinn to start. Remember this. In a few weeks, Browns fans will be begging for it
September 11th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
THANK YOU CRAIG! I like the line about eating our own before they all make us look bad. When DA was a free agent last offseason, the national consensus was that the Browns would be stupid to let him go or even trade him. The only people who wanted DA out of here were the clowns on our side who think that Quinn is going to be the next Joe Montana. The backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team in every city, but in Cleveland, we take it to another level.
Remember how badly Kelly Holcomb embarrassed us all in 2003? Yeah, careful what you wish for. Except now we have a PRO BOWL quarterback.
September 19th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
brady is a leader and will bust his hump for the browns , the kid brings swagger to the browns when he is in. as for D.A. , im tired of hearing he is a pro-bowler. he was an alternate , tom brady opted out which opened a spot. brady gives the browns the best chance to win a SUPER BOWL.
you guys just want to win enough games each year so that your not embarassed. put IN THE KID
September 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Derek Anderson is abysmal. Sure he got us ten wins last year, but he also blew our chances at making the playoffs with his 4 picks in the bengals game, or was it 5? Doesn’t matter. His performance against the ravens today made it clear he should not be starting. 22.9 Passer rating, completed less than fifty percent of his passes, was throwing into double and triple coverage constantly, and missing wide open recievers like josh cribbs. Put in Quinn.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
What football games are you people watching? I may be the only person who was calling to pull Anderson right after the Giants game. I said this from snap one of last year, and I’ll continue to say it. Derek Anderson should not only NOT start, he should be selling auto insurance or cell phones. You don’t back up your statements with facts. DO I REALLY NEED TO POST DEREK ANDERSON STATS over the last 5 games from last year and all of the 2008 season? Yes, our receivers drop passes, but 17 yards passing after 2 quarters of play in the Redskins game?? Are you freaking kidding me? I’m a Browns fan, I know a bad quarterback when I see one, trust me my friends.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Joe Thomas could have a better QB rating than D.A. does… I’m not exagerating. So for you to say Quinn can’t do better is rediculous to say the least.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
#7 BRIAN says: exactly, DA is the man. if he goes 0-4 or 0-5 then you can start the debate. (although it would help DA out if he could get some defensive help)
AGAIN, WHAT FOOTBALL GAMES ARE YOU PEOPLE WATCHING??!!! THE DEFENSE ALMOST SINGLE HANDEDLY BEAT THE REDSKINS! THEY HAD NO CHOICE! OUR DEFENSE IS PLAYING OUT OF THEIR FREAKIN MIND THIS YEAR.
PLEASE, I BEG YOU PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION AND WATCH THE GAMES! DEREK ANDERSON IS A BUM AND HE CAN’T EVEN DO A SIMPLE DUMP PASS TO JAMAL LEWIS!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Uh, Walter…this article was written after week one…
