August 23, 2010Should the Browns Mend Their Relationship with Jim Brown?

THUNDER! “The Cleveland Browns won’t be one of the teams that will make people flock to the television to see them perform, but not because they are expected to bore while they rebuild. It’s that they lack many explosive, exciting players at the moment. The Browns won’t put up big numbers or light up the scoreboard. But Browns’ running back Peyton Hillis provided a gutty performance Saturday night in the loss to the St. Louis Rams, 19-17. Despite the loss, Hillis’ gritty play may be the trademark for the Browns this season, signified by the way he battled through defenders. The Browns will have to grind their opponents out and [Hillis] may lead the way.” [Barry Barnes/NFL FanHouse]

Should the Cavs be looking at JR Smith? “There is no doubt that Smith would come in with a UHaul filled with baggage, but there’s also no denying the fact that he can play. He’ll turn 25 next month, and has already played six seasons in the NBA since making the jump from St. Benedict’s Prep in 2004. He could be the right mix of youth and experience for a Cavaliers team – that according to a comic sans press release I read – seems focused on making the playoffs next season.” [Brendan Bowers/Stepien Rules]

In the grand scheme of life it really is pretty irrelevant who wins the battle for fourth place in the 2010 American League Central but Manny Acta is pushing his team hard to avoid the embarrassment of finishing in such a position.” [Waves of Arms]

Diving into the upcoming Browns schedule: “Across the board, 11 of the 16 teams the Browns will engage in battle throughout the regular season won at least eight games just a season ago. Those that did not post a winning season include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs, whom the Browns play consecutively in weeks one and two. The Browns have to wait until Week 11 to face their next under .500 football unit in the Jacksonville Jaguars. In Week 14, the Browns travel to Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo to execute what should be an easy win versus the lowly Bills. But it’s the NFL; you never know when an upset is going to happen.” [Eddy Jansen/SBNation Cleveland]

And finally, “Former Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett has gotten back into the classroom. Now he wants to get back onto the football field. Clarett filed a motion with a judge asking to be allowed to travel to try out with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. A review of the motion was tentatively set for Monday afternoon and then later pushed back to Aug. 30. Clarett cannot leave the state until he receives clearance from the court.” [Associated Press]

One thing the Cavs need is more neck tattoos.
Yes on JR Smith
Hell, yes, on JR Smith! He can fill it up, and Byron Scott’s a good fit for this malcontent. If we get him, we can def sneak into the playoffs.
… because sneaking into the playoffs ensures long-term rebuilding.
We have already decided that Cleveland fans don’t watch teams that suck…
Indians….
Browns (last season) but I blame the dislike of Mangini for that one.
Cleveland fans are a fickle breed. Losing for 5 consecutive seasons so you could attempt to draft the next Carmelo, but get stuck with another Darko Milicic will just set the franchise back and possibly get the franchise moved because fans WILL NOT WATCH (emphasis, not sarcasm)
We WANT JR Smith!? Does NOBODY remember Ricky Davis!?
@4 If you can convince us the Cavaliers are rebuilding then I agree otherwise sign him. From everything I’ve seen and read I see nothing to indicate rebuilding. Of course I haven’t seen much of anything out of the Cavaliers since they imploded all over.
I might be willing to take him if we can get Nene, too.
#6 beat me to it. NO on J.R. Smith
“I might be willing to take him if we can get Nene, too.”
Perhaps he and Andy can form a chill bros club during international play, only to form a plan to run away to Cleveland together because they had so much fun doing up the FIBA. He’ll hold the decision live on uStream.
i am pumped to finally see MoC’s second season
Not really fair to compare JR’s problems to Ricky Davis’.
@Wayne – I don’t know either of them very well. But from what I do know, they seem similar. Both incredibly athletic, and equally immature. Both are more concerned with touches than with the team, and more concerned with stats that with wins.
unrelated-JR grew up a couple miles down the Garden State Parkway from me.
Every time Hillis enters the game they need to play this song: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search/songs/?query=thunderstruck
