Economic recovery! “We are living in a time dominated by a nasty global recession, right? Companies are shutting their doors; people are being laid off everywhere you look and signs are that it may continue for some time. There are however, certain people who are sitting pretty during this ill-fated situation – and those people are professional athletes. Many Pacquiao is slated to earn $38,000,000 in 2010. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is due to earn $60,250,000 – even though he’s refusing to fight you know who. David Beckham is making so much money stateside they’re considering legally changing his last name to Gates. Today I’m going to take a look at basketball’s rich list based on salary alone, and trust me it’s pretty horrible when you get into it. You’ll find guys on this list who would struggle to get on the NCAA All American team, some of these guys probably won’t even start for their respective teams next year, and when you factor in that they earn between them more than some countries do, it’s sickening.” [Stepein Rules]

Turner is gone, but what about Sully? “Gone is arguably the most talented player from the team and the reigning National Player of the Year. However, Thad Matta once again brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the country (#2 on ESPN), including 4 players in the ESPN Top 100, and 2 McDonald’s All Americans. We have just a little over two months until the basketball season gets under way, and as the title of this post suggests I would like to introduce the new members of the basketball Buckeyes to the general public. Let us start with the figurative and literal biggest player coming to campus; Jared Sullinger.” [Inside the Shoe]

Power football: “After how the 2009 season ended everyone knows the running game is the Browns’ offensive strength, and teams will be paying extra attention to Jerome Harrison. While the season ending injury to Monterrio Hardesty is a big blow, it will not affect the Browns’ ability to run the ball that much. Regardless, the key to success for Cleveland is a successful run game.” [Lake Erie Soldiers]

I had a discussion about athlete salaries with a group of British, Australians, myself, and a Canadian the other day, and the key point to remember is that in this country, half of that massive salary you make is going back to the government in taxes, and most of the top end athletes are doing charity work, donating, and starting foundations. I almost feel like it should be a law that if you make at least X amount of money/year, you should be required to give back x% of it to the community. Professional athletes here in Australia make nothing compared to American athletes. The salary cap for National Rugby League teams is like A$4.1 million for the top 25 players, so about $160,000 if it was split evenly.
@1… I read that first sentence and thought you were telling a joke.
So glad the Browns aren’t on the blackout potential list. Hopefully the team gives us a reason to fill the seats and Learner doesn’t have to pay $.34 on the dollar.
I laugh every time I think about Daniel Snyder giving Albert Haynesworth $100 mill. Laugh laugh laugh.
maybe they aren’t on the blackout list, but here in Columbus they could choose to air the Bengals instead. Anyone know how to make sure I can get all the browns games on AT & T uverse?

This might not be new – but this shows where the games will be on.
