Killer Loss Puts CSU Vikings Behind Eight-Ball
February 25, 2011WFNY March Madness Bracket Contest
February 25, 2011Armed with seven picks and many holes to fill in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns will reportedly use one of said selections on a quarterback position.
With the Plain Dealer’s Tony Grossi getting a few words of wisdom from team President Mike Holmngren this week, the Orange and Brown will allegedly look to provide Colt McCoy with a young back-up.
While the team has greater needs at this stage, the majority of the early selections will likely be aimed at defensive line and wide receiver. Holmgren does intend on watching top top-tiered quarterbacks in the combine as the Browns are currently selecting sixth overall and will likely have the opportunity to be in a spot coveted by any team looking to fill their gap under center. Also, if Blane Gabbert (currently ranked 5th overall by Scout.com) or Cam Newton (19th) can both do well enough in the combine to place themselves soundly among the top-5, this opens up a few more players at the sixth spot for the Browns.
The quarterbacks continue to be among the biggest question marks at this stage of the draft, showing on on various spots among league draft boards. Without clear-cut top players like Sam Bradford or Matthew Stafford, many mock drafts have had multiple defensive linemen among the top five. With the recent release of Shaun Rogers alongside David Bowens and Kenyon Coleman, it is widely speculated that the Browns will use their first-round selection on defense.
Given the latest talks about wanting to re-sign free agent Seneca Wallace, the drafting of another quarterback will likely signal the end of the Jake Delhomme Era in Cleveland.

Always good to have options. Just dont use a high pick on someone to be a back up.
hey, 5h or 6th round pick is always an option at QB. Who knows when you hit on Tom Brady.
Huzzah! We can finally draft Ryan Mallet!
I’m waiting for Denny to make a Jake Locker joke. Oh, wait…
I really really hope they aren’t considering drafting one of those top guys even if they’re wowed by them at the combine/pro day’s. If they’re going for a backup I couldn’t see spending a pick 4th round or higher for it. Too many gaps to fill at this point.
It would be great to trade down if AJ Green is gone at 6. If one of these other teams really falls in love with Newton, especially, and we could pick up an additional second rounder and still pick up one of these top DE’s or Julio Jones I would be thrilled.
most teams should probably be drafting a QB every other year or so in the late rounds anyway.
I got no beef w/ this.
If we trade down, I hope we get expendable Rams players in the deal…
This is an idea I’ve been supporting for years. Draft a QB every year in the later rounds. QBs are like pitchers in baseball- you can never have too many. Develop them, use them when starters get injured, trade them when other teams are desperate. Look at the roster of QBs Holmgren had in GB. Favre, Hasselbeck, Detmer, Brunell. That’s quite a group and he ended up trading all of those guys behind Favre. That’s a lot of extra 2nd round picks over the years.
I think Alex Henery can play QB …
I agree with Mark. Holmgren always had alot of quarterbacks around. Thats a good thing.
The likely reason they’ll be studying the top QB’s is to know who the likely trade partners are for the 6th pick in the draft. Collect thos picks! We could use them all!
