MLB Trading Block: Mets Looking to Shop Wright?
June 1, 2011While We’re Waiting… Questioning Second Base, Tressel Stories and NFL Court Primer
June 2, 2011With the MLB releasing its first wave of All-Star balloting results, Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is currently the team’s leading vote-getter.
Slotting in right behind New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, the 25-year-old, switch-hitting Cabrera has recevied nearly 700,000 votes to date despite playing in one of the lesser-attended parks early in the 2011 season. Fueled by a surging start, Cabrera is among the league’s best at his position in home runs (10), OPS (.868) and WAR (1.8). His hitting, mostly out of the two-hole, is a large reason for the team’s surprising place in the standings as the calendar turns to June.
Other Indians receiving recognition at their respective positions among American League peers are Carlos Santana (fourth), Orlando Cabrera (fourth), Travis Hafner (fourth), Grady Sizemore (eighth), and Shin-Soo Choo (twelfth). If voting were to end today, six members of the New York Yankess would be in the starting lineup, including the aforementioned Jeter.
Presently, the Indians (32-20) have the best record in the American League. Manny Acta, a member of the AL team’s coaching staff, may have to pull a few strings if the team is to have more than their requisite one Cleveland Indian on the roster. Those who wish to throw a few votes at their favorite Wahoo players – or even write in third baseman Jack Hannahan – can do so by heading here.

Jeetah!
Not. Anyway, I already dropped my 25 votes. Now everyone else needs to pull some weight.
Put in my 25 votes too. Come on gang, you can do it!
The Mannahan just picked up 25 votes.
Jeter? Allstar voting is always good for a laugh.
Asdrubel may be in a smaller market, but alot of people play fantasy baseball. That definitely is helping him be recognized as the best non-NY SS (because all NY players are obviously amazing. the starting-9 should all be Yankees. They do have the 5th best record in MLB afterall. that should be good enough to show their dominance, right?)
Wow, Jeter hasn’t belonged in the A-S game for the past couple years now. This is the problem with democracy…
Asdrubal only has 3 doubles tonight. Jeter is clearly better.
Side note – how about some love for old Jhonny Peralta? Coming out of the woodwork this year and hitting .316, and slugging .538
Your arguments are quite laughable at best. You claim that the Derek Jeter does not belong in the All Star game. On the other hand, you also fail to admit that Josh Hamilton does not belong in the All star game. Josh Hamilton sat on the DL for close to most of this young MLB season and surely does not belong in the all star game more than Derek Jeter. Ichiro deserves Hamilton’s spot by ALOT and I’d argue that Asdrubel Cabrera deserves Derek Jeter’s spot but not by much. Derek Jeter being one of the worst players in all of baseball…? I guess Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus might be the worst players in the universe (check their BA)! LOL. Thanks for the chuckle. Good to see Ranger fans have a great sense of humor.
My 25 votes have been in and I forwarded the link to a bunch of folks that are from the area and have moved to Florida, Hawaii, etc….many took a few moments and voted for our Tribe players. Sounds like a good idea for all of us!
Sorry Mark…NO mention of you know who today…LOL.
All tough we all know cabrera is a amazing player, I must say with his changable hot/cold streaks, I am suprised with the amount of votes he has.
I don’t see the big deal about Jeter starting. Cabrera is a lock to make them team.
Sandy Alomar garbaged his way into a few shady all-star starts, you cant have it both ways.
@bridgecrosser – the big deal is that with so many Yankee players being voted in (many w/o the credentials), it will leave many teams to only have 1 starter. Yes, Asdrubel will make it either way, but the Indians getting a 2nd or 3rd player into the game are shrinking (despite you know having the best record in the AL).
it is the system and those packed Jake crowds certainly helped get more Indians than may have been worthy in the 90s, but it doesn’t mean the system isn’t flawed (though it’s an exhibition game, so no real reason to get too upset I suppose).
Bridgecrosser, I agree. At least the all star game is supposed to be for the fans. So if that’s who the fans want, so be it. Ryan Sandberg used to get this treatment towards the end of his career and since I was a fan of the Cubs when I was little (they and the Braves were the only teams on TV then) I loved it.
The real shame is that Jeter has still been winning gold gloves as that is actually voted on by “baseball people” (i think).
If American league fans were smart they would vote for the player who is playing the best this season and not the one who is more popular. The Yankees probably have a great chance to make the world series this year but their shortstop (Derek Jeter) is having a not so great year. On the other hand Asdrubal Cabrera is having an mvp type of season so far. So if you Yankee fans want home field advantage for the majority of the world series if i were you id vote asdrubal
