Update Your Wish Lists…
The A’s are closing in on a deal with the Rockies that would send star outfielder Matt Holliday to Oakland from Colorado, SI.com has learned. The players Colorado would receive are not yet known.
Holliday is due to become a free agent after the 2009 season.
All in all, it would have been pretty costly to bring Holliday to Cleveland. This also likely takes Huston Street out of the mix as well, assuming he’s one of the pieces moved to Colorado.
If there’s a silver lining here, I think it’s that Holliday will do a lot less damage in the bay area than he would have had he fell on to the roster of the St. Louis Cardinals or Philadelphia Phillies – both rumored to be interested in his services. It will be interesting to see what Holliday can do at McAfee Coliseum as it is one of the biggest pitchers park in baseball. Have fun with all of that foul territory, Matt.

Well I’d rather a good hitter go to an NL team than any AL team, because this just means we’ll have to face said good hitter.
The real blow here is if Huston Street is indeed part of this, which I imagine he’d have to be.
Ten bucks says we get Isringhausen.

I can’t figure out what the A’s are doing here though. If you are constantly in a salary dump mode and always getting young prospects, why deal for Boras client in his walk year? The only way this makes sense is if they then turn and trade him sometime this year for other prospects. No way they think they can contend this year, although that division is awful outside of the Angels.

Holliday goes from the best hitters park in baseball to maybe the worst. It will be interesting to say the least
I still think that maybe Jensen Lewis can be a good closer, although maybe it would be silly to bank on him playing like he did in September for an entire season

I was shocked when I heard it was the A’s that he was traded to. I thought for sure it was an NL power (Philly, Chicago, St. Louis). The only thing I could think is that either:
The A’s are going to deal him now.
The A’s will deal him at the deadline next season for a sexy young pitcher
they have there eye on now, but are too cheap to actually aquire.
Last point. Thank God we didn’t go after Huston Street. Guy’s about to lose it for good. Mark my words. Last time I watched him pitch he looked like Joe-Bo right before he imploded.

Forget about a wish list-remember, Dolan and Shapiro head this thing up. Remember last year’s off-season haul after the Tribe was “supposedly” gearing up for a championship run? (Jamey Carroll, Kobi-nothing done with corner outfield or infield).
Cmon…….get real. It’s either an injured veteran on a 1 year deal (Mark Prior types) or retreads that come cheap. And-the offers made to Tribe free agents are phony and only meant to placate sycophant fans and media (ie offering CC a 4 year deal for someone 28 years old-a joke).
Your wish list better not cost much.

Jensen Lewis a full time major league closer………PLEASE.
The guy can’t break 90mph, most times is in the mid 80’s. Contenders wouldn’t put up with that nonsense………….all the good ones throw heat. The cheap ones throw powder.
Cmon……Jensen Lewis as closer? That’s like banking on Jason Michaels and Franklyn Guitierez as corner outfielders. Take off your rose colored glasses please.

Pitching…. pitching… pitching… We need a #2 or #3 starter and one stud in the bullpen. The Tribe’s offense is decent enough to get it done – you need pitching.
While I think Carmona will bounce back some, you can’t rely on Cliff for another Cy Young. Therefore you need AT LEAST one more pitching capable of a 14-10 4.00 ERA season. And another 1-2 relievers you would be okay pitching in the 8th inning against any hitter in the AL.

Tribe’s offense “decent” enough to get it done??????
Who plays the corner outfield positions? First base/third base??? DH????
Cmon…………do you want to compete or dream?????? Wasn’t it last off-season we heard the same about the corner outfield and infield???? If that’s your idea of decent, welcome to mediocrity my friend. Dolan/Shapiro thank you for your support.

Needs more Cavs coverage.

does not seem as though the A’s gave up all that much. Looks like Trevor Crowe (who has had his booms and busts and may not be more than average in the long run), Sowers and Laffey would have gotten this done. I would have made that trade for a year of Holliday if I thought this was the year.

Cmon b, it’s about money-something the Dolan’s won’t part with, not even for a year. Forget about Holliday or any other player of note-they come with a contract, not in the plan.
Start getting excited about the prospects of Casey Blake and maybe a 41 year old Trevor Hoffman. Reality bites doesn’t it?
November 11th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
a re-signing of Casey Blake could lead me to tear out the strands of my hair, one by one, head to toe. it would be less painful and bothersome than watching him again.
he was good and serviceable for some time, but by now, the average white hustler guy routine has gotten old, literally and figuratively.

b-
Look at his stats last year. Tell me it was about “hustling”.
Did you watch the games??? I vote no.
November 12th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
checked the stats, thoroughly unimpressed, especially once in Dodger blue. Yahoo’s stats failed to account for hustling, so I suppose I’m not seeing the whole picture
