No Doubt Crennel Was a Player’s Coach
December 30, 2008Personnel Decisions To Be Made
December 30, 2008ESPN has been all over the merry-go-round of NFL head coaches and general managers over the past 48 hours. Not long after the Browns were given the “nah, I’m good” by Bill Cowher, Lerner Inc. turned in the direction of Scott Pioli. Fans of the Browns have mixed feelings about another New England guy, but he’s obviously not a secret by any means – especially with the Kansas City Chiefs looking his way as well.
Chris Mortensen apparently feels that the NFL also really digs the Baltimore Ravens as both their Director of Pro Personel (George Kokinis) and Director of College Scouting (Eric DeCosta) are also on the Chiefs’ short list along with email extraordinaire Phil Savage.
With all of the openings in the NFL, Randy Lerner will have his work cut out for him if he plans on bringing in a top-tier prospect to fill both vacant rolls. What we do have going for us is that the new GM could also bring in his own guys to fill the coaching spots while other teams would have to contend with head coaches already in place – or vice-versa. What we do not have going for us is the fact that Cleveland was essentially the laughing stock of other league front offices this season. The lack of communication, the Copperfield of an owner (until the Winslow situation), and the severe lack of perceived player discipline all cannot sit well with those interviewing to come here.
Here’s to hoping that the history of the franchise and the hunger of the fan base/players for success mean something. This is like a bad after school special…

Rookie GM and rookie coach will equal doing this all over again in 3-4 years.

NEW YORK (WABC) — The Cleveland Browns have scheduled an interview Tuesday with fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press.
Mangini, dismissed Monday by the Jets after they collapsed down the stretch and missed the playoffs, will meet with Browns owner Randy Lerner in the New York area, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the interview.
Mangini began his NFL career in Cleveland in 1994 as a public relations assistant. He went 23-26 in three seasons and made the playoffs once with the Jets, who went 1-4 in their final five games.
The Browns fired coach Romeo Crennel on Monday.
@creative-
Tuesday as in today? Anyone heard anything else about this?
I saw something on ESPN. I wonder how he gets along with Pioli – I can’t imagine that anyone with ties to New England appreciates the spygate thing…
Shanahan just got fired….I think we have a legitimate coach not named Mangini.
Definitely intriguing. He did a lot with a bunch of guys that wouldn’t start on most teams…
Sounds like a perfect fit!
Sell the team to Vegas!
BIG MONEY!
NO CLEVELAND CURSE THERE!
Go Cavs.
