While the Browns continue to be one of the few NFL franchises that do never have cheerleaders, our proverbial nemesis – the Pittsburgh Steelers (who are “just another team”) – had them for a brief time dating back 48 years ago. In fact, the Steelerettes were the first group of cheerleaders ever when it comes to the league. Paving the way for thousands of females after them, KDKA Pittsburgh caught up with the first group of women to work a pyramid.
The interview overall is not even worth reading. However, one part did make me laugh:
We had a live band at the time on the field and that was Bennie Benack so he started playing music. And we started to dance,” recalls former Steelerette Valerie Miller. “It was either ‘Hello Dolly’ or ‘The Stripper’ or we started cheering or we went out and built a pyramid.”
While some things have changed, others haven’t.
“The Browns used to throw things at us,” says Patty Wolf. (Emphasis mine)
Okay…strike that. Two things made me laugh. One, the choice of songs. The other being the projectiles being tossed their way by the orange and brown. So, it turns out that Browns fans learn from the best. Who knew? The only thing that would make this better is if one of the former players were to call out a fan, and then the fan yell back “I learned it by watching you, dad! I learned it by watching you!”
