What Would You Do if the Browns Traded Brady Quinn?

Written By:  Craig   |  Category:  Cleveland Browns, General   |  Comments:   43

Lindy Slinger, Brady Quinn Now, let me get this straight right out of the gates.  I don’t think the Browns are actually going to trade Brady Quinn.  Especially considering what we’ve heard about Eric Mangini and his preferences for players with leadership ability, poise, and professionalism.  If there are qualities that belong on Quinn’s resume, we know more about his abilities in this realm than we do about his viability as a talent on the field.  That being said, the loosest of Internet rumors is floating around that Brady Quinn and Shaun Rogers could be dealt for Denver’s Jay Cutler and a 3rd round pick.

There are a variety of reasons that I don’t believe this rumor.  First of all, the details are WAY too specific.  Remember what details we had about the Browns trading Kellen Winslow?  That’s right.  None.  So, you think with this Browns organization, with so many of the Browns “anonymous sources” having been let go, that this level of detail is going to be available about a deal that might take place?  That’s right.  It wouldn’t be available.

So, let’s pull this back from reality and into the hypothetical.  At this point, I think we know how most people feel about Derek Anderson as a potential starting quarterback for this team.  Given the pure lack of knowledge and game tape available on Quinn so far, would you be comfortable trading him?  Although I don’t buy the rumor, would you rather go into the season with the unknown (Quinn) or would you rather go in with a known quantity like Jay Cutler?

When we were chatting about it over email this morning, RockKing was tentatively stating that he didn’t necessarily feel it was a bad idea.  He called Cutler a rich man’s D.A. I, on the other hand, am not so sure.  Yes, I know more about Cutler than I do about Quinn, but I don’t find Cutler to be the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.  If he was even close to John Elway, you know the Broncos wouldn’t even be linked to the idea of getting rid of him.

Maybe having LeBron James has spoiled me as a sports fan, but I am no longer satisfied looking for a serviceable person to lead the Cleveland Browns.  Why should I accept serviceable, when every year teams pick smart in the draft and occasionally get lucky in locking up a guy who turns out to be a future hall of famer?  While I don’t know if Brady Quinn is that guy or not, I certainly don’t think he has been given a reasonable shot yet.

I am just one man, with one opinion, though.  What do you guys think?  How would you react if the Browns traded Brady Quinn?

At this point, quite sadly, I don’t care. ManKok should do whatever they feel is necessary to bring the Browns back to respectability, even if that means totally starting over.

In other words, I don’t want to hear any excuses.

  • 2. March 3, 2009

If it were Cutler for Quinn straight up I would do it in a heartbeat. I agree, Cutler is not the next Manning or Elway, but he has proven himself to be an above-average to good QB in the NFL. And he is still young. Had Denver even been competent on defense the last few years, Cutler’s own stature could be much larger with a few playoff victories on his resume.

Quinn, while he possesses talent and promise, is highly unproven. And though he was decent last year, he didn’t do anything that jumped out to suggest he is absolutely the guy to lead the Browns over the next 10 years.

I would not hesitate to take Cutler over Quinn.

But I doubt Denver would do that.

The real issue with this rumor is Shaun Rogers. He is the best player in the deal and was a monster last year. But if he is going to be a malcontent and revert back to the laziness and half-effort of some of this Detroit days, how valuable will he be? And if his relationship with Mangini is beyond repair, why not start fresh with guys who are on the same page with the leadership?

Rogers is undoubtedly irreplaceable, and would leave a HUGE void in the Browns’ defense. But if he is not the 2008 Shaun Rogers in 2009, there will be a big void in the Browns defense anyway. So why not upgrade at the QB position and recoup one of the first day picks that the previous regime always seemed to so eager to give away?

Who knows if there is any validity to the rumor, but is VERY interesting. And I think the most interesting part will be to see the reaction of Browns fans. And you question is the most important: how committed is this fan base to Brady Quinn?

For me, if the alternative is Jay Cutler, I’d say I’m not that committed at all.

  • 3. March 3, 2009

I know I would not make this deal. If Mangini is looking for a professional leader, Cutler is not your man. I think it is funny that McDaniels would be shipping Cutler out of Denver because he is a Me first guy and Mangini sure as hell isn’t looking for a Me first guy (see Winslow deal). It doesn’t add up. I’m pretty sure we aren’t really going to see anything happen until we know what kind of interest is out there for DA after we pay him his $5 million (Thanks Phil). As much as it kills me to say this, if Rogers has become a distraction, I think we should try to move him for picks

I’m with you deep, completely apothetic anymore. Although I really feel that if you trade Quinn and Rogers for Cutler, then you should certainly do better than a 3rd rounder.

This title is misleading… my first thought was “Oh hell no.” And then when you followed it with “… for Jay Cutler” I immediately changed my tune. Quinn hasn’t really proven he can do much more than throw the short ball… and our best short yardage receiver is on his way to Tampa.

    Where you at Jay?

    7. March 3, 2009

Why are we even discussing moving Brady Quinn? Is it just so Mankok can get out from under the rug in regards to their pathetic handling of Shaun Rogers?

If Jay Cutler was all that, why would Denver want to move him? Why not give Brady a chance before you’re all ready to shove him out the door? If his on the field play meets his leadership/charisma/huddle presence/mobility, et al…….you’ve got your man. Enough with these “big arms already”…..start looking at the traits that make for great quarterbacks.

Who wants a “rich man’s DA” if the poor man’s facsimile is such a stiff?

    Viva la Mankok.

    8. March 3, 2009

Check out Culter’s scouting report coming out of Vanderbuilt. “Big arm”……lack of vision, mobility, poise, presence………prone to throwing picks.

    Great QB makings?

  • Brendon
    9. March 3, 2009

I think it would be a bad deal. Cutler is going to be an average QB AT BEST. Until we know what Quinn can do, then we can’t move him

    12. March 3, 2009

i want to see the quinn thing play out. i believe he’s special. bernie kosar with the physical gifts to go along with brains and leadership. we suffered two idiotic years of DA… we have to see what BQ can do.

  • S-Dub
    13. March 3, 2009

@Randy: Pretty sure Randy Moss was “all that” and he got traded for a 4th rounder because Oakland is completely incompetent and he’s one of the best in the NFL. I think Cutler has proven he is A LOT better than any of his scouting reports said. He is 10x better than any QB that has played in Cleveland since Brian Sipe.

BUT, if it’s for Rogers and Quinn for Cutler. There better be at least a 2nd included and probably multiple picks. In Quinn you get a QB with a lot of potential and he’d be working McDaniels whose a great QB coach and they’d get Rogers who is every bit as good as Haynesworth and makes a quarter of his new salary. I’d even push for a 1st rounder.

  • TBrown
    14. March 3, 2009

I would be upset, for one. Successful organizations do not draft potential “franchise” players in the first round and then trade them away without fully testing them on the field first. And let’s not forget, it was Cutler who helped orchestrate Denver’s impressive three game collapse last season by throwing pick after pick.

Besides, we’d lose our best defensive player for what? A third rounder? The entire organization would need to be fitted for straight jackets if they took that deal.

  • DP
    15. March 3, 2009

Brady and Shaun for Jay CUtler and a 3rd? No way. I’d need AT LEAST a 2nd, and possibly another lower round pick before I’d consider that deal.

I’d rather stick with Brady this year, anyway, and see if they can smooth out the whole Rogers thing. Personally, I think the Rogers issue is more about Rogers and Romeo than it is about Mangini. While others (ahem) love to pin it ALL on Mangini, I tend to think it has more to do with the fact that Romeo ran the clubhouse like a country club, and now that someone actually wants to make a guy who’s 360 pounds be accountable for his weight, considering the salary he makes, that guy chooses to pout.

    Clearly all Mangini’s fault.

Been a Browns fan nearly 30 years; that would send me away for at least the next two to three years. We are all sick and tired of ridiculous personnel moves, poor signings, drafts and trades; sending a player with Brady’s potential and hometown alure out before giving him a legitimate chance to lead our team would be heart/back-breaking in my book. ManKok is already off to a so-so start in the eyes of many and this would surely kill off the last goodwill of many loyal fans.

  • BrownieInGA
    19. March 3, 2009

With the new regime, we really do not know what is going on behind the curtains. Which I suppose is how ManKok wants it. It’s not fun for us as fans but it may benefit the team down the road. Maybe too much transparency is a bad thing after all? That said, I truly hope this is nothing but a rumor. Quinn truly has not been given a fair shot to see if he is a viable NFL commodity, and he is certainly on his way to being the national face of the Browns. Cutler’s game has striking similarities to DA’s game and we have seen were that has gotten us. I personally do not like the gunslinger mentality, (unless your named Brett Favre). Maybe the rumor is off base and it’s really DA and Rogers? Give Quinn a chance, let him be a Brown in the sense that Graham, Kosar, Newsome and Brown are. WE NEED STABILITY – no more upheaval!

@ Craig “Maybe having LeBron James has spoiled me as a sports fan, but I am no longer satisfied looking for a serviceable person to lead the Cleveland Browns.”

That is why Lebron is such a powerful figure in this city, and an antidote to the “second-rate” mentality that has plagued us (fans/organizations) for so long!

I don’t know if Brady is the answer, but I’m more comfortable naming him as the starter than anyone else, namely because of his (aforementioned) posie and leadership ability. Whether it would be coming from the right place, I don’ t know… but something inherent in the Browns organization since ‘99 has been a lack of direction and focus… a lack of poise and grace under pressure. Perhaps I’m looking for it in the wrong places in Quinn, and I shold be looking towards the front office… but we need someone who has a good head on his shoulders to lead this team. Jay Cutler is certainly not that.

    22. March 3, 2009

The trade purposed with rogers and quinn going would be stupid for the browns to do, and I to doubt that it has any truth.

Just for sake of discussing it though, what if we could trade Brady and our 1st for Cutler and the broncos 1st? I would be in favor of that, because then we get a proven Franchise QB, and yes he is one of the top QBs in the league. (Randy, you mention the scouts take when he came out of vandy, but I wonder what they thought of Tom Brady or many other QBs). Also with the 12th pick it wouldnt be THAT much of a stretch to get Muauluga, because everyone in cleveland is apparently in love with him. But, getting Rey and Cutler for Brady and whoever is picked at 5 would be a steal.

You guys are looking into this WAAAYY too deeply. What in the world would we, as Browns fans, do knowing that Brady is no longer there to take off his helmet and let those beautiful locks of his blow freely in the wind?????

    I couldn’t deal with it!!!!

  • 25. March 3, 2009

In 1986, I would not have traded Bernie Kosar for John Elway. Never! And yet, I would have been wrong.

Not saying these two compare to those two, but the scouting reports – smart guy versus big arm – are eerily similar. (of course Elway could run, but for the sake of metaphor….) Still, it begs the question, with either one – who is going to catch the ball? Not to mention who is going to tackle the other team when they have the ball?

    26. March 3, 2009

cutler is too soft to run the show in cleveland. first time he hears the dawgs call him out, i think he will cry like tim couch did (and i have a feeling he will be called out his first bad game, citing the frusteration browns fans are in right now)

  • 27. March 3, 2009

Just because Brady Quinn looks the part does not mean he has poise OR leadership. Remember this is a man who caught into a fistfight in the locker room last year. That doesn’t exactly make him, Joe Montana, in my eyes…

Remember this is a guy who had the same exact passer rating as Derek Anderson last year, a quarterback everybody inexplicably seems to hate.

I wouldn’t make that trade because we are giving up the best player in the deal and we aren’t getting compensated for it properly for it. I’d make it a heartbeat if we get a first or second rounder instead of a third.

In case you hadn’t noticed, Doc, Brady didn’t strat that fight in the locker room. Nor was he going to take any flack from SR so drop it already. It would be crazy and stupid to trade Brady without ever knowing what he is capable of doing. We already know Jay Cutler doesn’t seem to have “it”. So why do we need another DA clone on the team? On the other hand the Browns are not known to make many smart moves with their players of late. I so hope if Brady gets traded to Denver that he leads them to a Superbowl victory and the Browns never win another game with Cutler.

“Yes, I know more about Cutler than I do about Quinn, but I don’t find Cutler to be the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.”

Are you implying that Quinn could be anything even close to one of those players?

    Are you kidding me?

The legend of Brady Quinn is the most baffling chapter in Cleveland sports history.

    Simply amazing.

    31. March 3, 2009

I bet that D.A. ends up with more career wins as a Cleveland Brown than Brady Quinn!

    Any takers?

Seriously, I hope Quinn is the starter next year as this offense is ground-breakingly inept (picture an output similar the final month of last season for 16 games). It should be fun down on the lake.

  • 32. March 3, 2009

“In case you hadn’t noticed, Doc, Brady didn’t strat that fight in the locker room. Nor was he going to take any flack from SR so drop it already.”

Yeah but the fact that he got punched in the face by one of his teammates showed the general lack of respect the team had for it’s starting quarterback. That would NEVER happen to Tom Brady or Peyton Manning… It’s not a total sign of doom but to me that’s a huge ominous warning.

I agree with ELOCK. I don’t get Browns fans undying loyalty to a guy whose started 3 games in two seasons, dropped to the damn near second round in the draft when he was projected to go top 3, doesn’t have a huge arm, played for a team that couldn’t win the big game in college, and did as well as Derek Anderson last year. I mean people do realize that Jay Cutler threw for 4,500 yards last season. I mean Cutler has steadily improved each year, he’s been in the league. All we really know about Quinn is that he’s pretty and he’s from the area.

This whole thing makes me f#*@ing sick! I’ve been a Browns fan since the Brian Sipe era, and as much as we have had bad management and coaching in the past decade, we have also had the most dedicated fan base in the damn league! I will speak for the majority that i have talked to…I think the hometown boy deserves a shot. Not only is he intelligent, a leader, mobile, and a physical specimen that can rival the best of linebackers, he also loves the Cleveland Browns. It’s like when Bernie Kosar declined the draft so he could be selected by the Browns in the supplemental draft. Tell me what could be better than someone with the desire to be great, the abilities to do it, and the intelligence to keep bad s#*t from happening? And to top it all off, he had always dreamed of being a Cleveland Brown! GIVE QUINN THE JOB! You will thank yourself later.

  • 34. March 3, 2009

I had dreams of being the Browns starting QB growing up, too. That doesn’t make me a future NFL Pro Bowler.

  • Jeff
    35. March 3, 2009

As a huge Brady Quinn fan and one of the guys who does believe he has what it takes to make it in the NFL, I would still think about this trade. I have a bad feeling Shaun Rogers is going to show up fat and lazy and we would lose all trade value for him and he would then have a huge underserved contract. I probably would have done this deal prior to Cutler acting like a baby since hearing they wanted Cassel over him, but I might still think about it. I agree I would rather have a second round pick. This probably would help our cap number out a lot too, and we need to try and fix that since Savage screwed it up.

I am torn for sure on this issue. I probably wouldn’t like the deal if they did it, but I would never go as far as some people saying they hope the Browns would never win a game under Cutler. That is stupid. I am still a Browns fan and just want to win something. I have low expectations for this next year however.

Dear god. I don’t know why we aren’t asking for Cutler. Giving up Rogers isn’t going to happen.

Quinn started 1 game against one of the worst defenses in recent history. But he’s untouchable. Huh?

I like Quinn but you’d have to try for Cutler.

The Plain Dealer reports crazy rumors are flying around the Browns. One rumor has the Browns trading QB Brady Quinn and DT Shaun Rogers to Denver for QB Jay Cutler and a third-round draft choice. Another has the Browns dealing WR Braylon Edwards to the New York Giants for pass rusher DE Mathias Kiwanuka.

JROD, do you look at the same stats as the rest of the sports analysis world? Cutler is 17-20 as a starter. Above average? Cutler is a sensitive headcase….sound like someone we just got rid of? This trade would be a disaster. I do think Brady is the man that can lead us to greatness. He has all the qualities of a NFL QB….pocket presence, mobility, acuracy and oh yeah..he is intelligent. Who cares if he cant throw an 80 yd bomb like DA…DA cant hit a 10 button hook or roll out and toss a 5 yd dump pass. Bottom line…and I have never been to this point….but if they trade Brady for a lowlife like Cutler….I am gone….I will root against the browns and mankok every week.

  • 39. March 4, 2009

Well, here is the deal folks. My only concern with coming to Cleveland is the risk of Staph infection. You see, being a type 1 diabetic requires me to use needles multiple times daily, as in pretty much before every meal, or if I feel like my sugar is at a critical level. With the Brown’s well documented problems with Staph, I’m not sure it would be safe for me to use my needles around their facilities. The last thing I need is a staph infection inside my pancreas!!! Other than that, I am ready to get out of Dumbver, and really I’d go just about anywhere. Except Canada… I hear their free insulin is tainted with gravy.

They need to give Brady a fair chance I know he can do better than 2 for 17 give me a break o could do better than that Anderson initials fit him well DA if the browns trade Brady I will no longer be a browns fan either he has not been given a fair chance 2 and 1/2 games come on how can anybody prove themselves. Hope they make the right decision
