On Cavs GM Danny Ferry: “While his failures and frustrations as a player, along with being part of the Ron Harper trade, are what most fans remember, those trials also have made him an effective general manager with the Cavs. It’s why veteran Cavs broadcaster Joe Tait says Ferry is his favorite all-time player.” [Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer]

Brian Windhorst gets the business from ESPN’s Ric Bucher: “The Plain Dealer came out and said very early on that Joe Smith was going to the Cavs, but I know as early as yesterday that there was a chance it could have come apart and he could have been headed to the Lakers… it got a little contentious… at the end of the day does the Plain Dealer look wrong…? No, because he ended up there, but were they completely on the beam… maybe not?” [BS Report via Cursed Cleveland]

Looks like the Celtics have another injury to deal with as Rajon Rondo could miss seven to 10 days. [NESN]

On the Browns addressing their needs via NFL Draft: “[If] you analyze the construction of the Steelers defensive personnel, you realize that the team does not waste Round One draft picks on 3-4 rush linebackers. Instead, the Steelers take smaller risks later in Day One, on Day Two, or they sign undrafted free agents. With the exception of James Farrior, the entire Steelers linebacking core consists of these types of players.” [DK/ClevelandReboot]

Now it’s in the hands of the selection committee: “Twenty wins, Matta thought, “would be a heck of a run” for an Ohio State men’s basketball team that suddenly lacked its captain, emotional leader and last link to the team that played for the NCAA championship two years ago. The season ended yesterday with 20 on the nose. The Buckeyes made just enough plays to overcome their mistakes in the final few minutes and defeat Northwestern 52-47 in Value City Arena. Kudos to Brian Windhorst, simply the best and most knowledgeable source of Cavaliers information. Brian is a trusted part of team Cavaliers and definitely has access to the organization. As for Ric Bucher-here’s just yet another example of a national media type rooting for the major markets (Stephen A. Smith, et al). How childish-crying in a national forum because he got stumped by Brian Windhorst.
Way to go Windy…….way to go Danny and company.
One Ferry’s really admirable traits is his mixture of boldness in going after someone he wants, but not wasting years covering his behind if the move was wrong. Like a lot of inexperienced GMs in every sport (think Shapiro and Matt Lawton) some of his early moves were just way off. But he didn’t get gun shy, he just blew it all up again. Most recently, we find out that after his lame attempt to pull the “end-around-the-powerful-agent-in-South-America” ploy boomeranged, he’s managed to negotiate with the guy again. If we lose LeBron in 2010, at least I won’t feel like a more competent GM could have kept him. Ferry is the guy to give it the best shot.
Harv-Lebron ain’t goin anywhere. You need to take the “if” out of your thoughts, particularly given your correct assessment of Danny Ferry. Put together all of the pros for staying versus the reasons for leaving and add it up. This isn’t MLBA or the NFL in regards to pure free-agency. Sure, Lebron will keep his options open to secure the best situation; who’s gonna buy his $30M home if he leaves?
why would he have to sell it?
If he kept a $30M home in Akron, why would he leave?
You link to our site one time and you guys suspiciously go down for 24 hours?? That will teach you.
aaand, a sigh of relief
Randy, I think it’s futile to try and speculate whether he’s staying or going. There have been bigger surprises than LeBron leaving Cleveland that have occurred, despite all sorts of evidence to the contrary. Just have fun while’s he’s here, and if he leaves, he leaves. It’s not in your hands, and truthfully, it’s not in Dan Gilbert’s from here on out. He’s done all he can, in the end, it’s up to LeBron.
Where does Bucher get off calling out Windy? He’s acting like Windy went out on a limb and just got lucky. It’s not like ESPN holds its cards until everything falls into place. I can remember a lot of times ESPN has announced things were happening, and they never came true.
Sounds like sour grapes to me.
bucher lost alot of credibility to me when he reported LIVE ON AIR during a national broadcast this season that the cavs have yet to have a 50-win season in the lebron era. thanks for trying bucher.
bucher told the chicago media last year, prior to the ‘07–08 season that it was guaranteed that kobe would be out of LA by thanksgiving.
so much for that, huh?
bucher is worthless. the only halfway decent nba personality on espn is stein, and even he has his moments.
windy reported what there was to report. yeah, the lakers tried to step in (and windy mentioned that) and they failed.
lolz @ espn, making themselves look stupid one article at a time.
I hope he stays.
