NFL Free Agency: Leigh Bodden Signs With Pats

For all those hoping that the Browns could sign Leigh Bodden in order to say that we traded a draft pick for Shaun Rogers, well the opportunity is gone. While Mangini and company were signing Hank Poteat, the Pats were signing the Browns’ former starting CB to a one-year “prove it” type of contract for the veteran minimum $750,000. Of course, financial terms were not disclosed in the Poteat signing, but let’s assume the numbers are similar. Who would you rather have? Hank Poteat or Leigh Bodden?
Just to be fair, we don’t know if Bodden would even be willing to come back to Cleveland. Certainly, if he had the option between going to New England on a one-year deal, and coming back to Cleveland on a one-year deal, you have to think the decision was easy. Plus, last time I checked he hasn’t had any problems at Logan International Airport in Boston just yet.
Also in fairness to the new regime here, Hank Poteat will be able to help teach the new system to Browns CBs. Also, when analyzing this year vs. last year, I would like to think that Hank Poteat will be a better nickel option than Terry Cousin. I can’t remember the last time in Cleveland sports history that an insignificant player accounted for so much negativity as Terry Cousin.

Personally, I would hope the Poteat will teach Mcdonald and Wright to be more aggressive, because Bodden played loose coverage if I remember right. It would have been nice to see a guy that is comparable to wright and mcdonald, and could challenge them for a starting job, but I guess everyone could see this move being inevitable.
I like the Elam signing better though. This kid is out of Kent State, and will be a lot better option then having Adams start at S. If they find a S in the draft too then it could be a nice group.
David Delucci, an insigificant player considering his butt will be nailed to the bench, will draw plenty of fire from fans because he’ll be taking the spot of a younger (and much more useful) player.
Bodden made it clear (I believe on NE radio) that NE was really his top and only choice.
Really Nick? Are you saying that if another team offered more than the NFL veteran minimum that he wouldn’t have considered that? He signed for the bottom floor rate my friend.
Have to agree with you Randy. No way Bodden signs with the Pats if another team offers him more $. I wouldn’t of had a problem with the Browns giving him a 2 or 3 yr deal with somewhere around 1.5 – 2 mill a year. I mean we’re paying Mike Adams just about that, and Bodden helps us more than Adams
Lyon…..we gave the cash to Hank Poteat, who’s been cut now by at least three teams. Poteat has started a total of 16 games in how many seasons now? Yet “Nick” tells us that Bodden was only headed to New England for the league minimum…….nonsense.
