While We’re Waiting… Varejao’s Wrist Injury, Clemens’ Debut, and Saying Goodbye to Eric Snow

While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

The voodoo that you do: ”Perhaps someone with the power somewhere put a hex on Cavaliers’ right wrists this season.  Darnell Jackson broke his in the preseason. Delonte West broke his in January. And now Anderson Varejao, who had a perfect attendance record, is being bothered by his, too. [...] X-rays taken at the arena showed no break and there’s a chance he’ll have an MRI on Monday, but the team generally believes it is not serious.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

“[Roger] Clemens pitched his first game at cavernous Cleveland Municipal Stadium — cavernous is the official adjective of Cleveland Municipal. He faced my Indians on May 15, 1984. There were 4,004 people in the stands. And it was cold, really cold, so cold that Roger Clemens’ soon-to-be wife Debbie said that she had to hide in the bathroom. All this makes it a quintessential day of my childhood. I wasn’t a child then — I was 17 — but that was OK, this was a team that fit my childhood. They were all kinds of lousy, and would have been even worse if not for the herculean efforts of Bert Blyleven (19-7, 2.87 ERA).

The starting lineup Clemens faced that day:

Brett Butler, cf
Tony Bernazard, 2b
Pat Tabler, lf
Andre Thornton, dh
Mike Hargrove, 1b
Julio Franco, ss
Ron Hassey, c
Brook Jacoby, 3b
George Vukovich, rf

If the Browns were to draft all defense, here’s a look at what we could realisitcally come away with [Cleveland Browns Reboot]

So long, E Snow: “We’re not capologists, but we believe the $11 million number is misleading since it will only affect Gilbert’s payroll for this season, in which we’re guessing the team will receive a credit on a portion of the luxury tax payment (payroll will go from roughly $112 million to $101 million).  Had the league made this decision a year earlier, the Cavs could have used the money to chase a free agent. In the end, Ferry never got anything in return for Snow’s allegedly coveted contract.” [Cursed Cleveland]

And finally, I’m going to pretend that you all care about my fantasy sports endeavors.  Currently, I’m in the finals of the WFNY basketball league.  And things just kicked off with the WFNY baseball league as well as the Cleveland Sports blog league that’s being run by Cry Me a Cuyahoga River.  Philly’s Jimmy Rollins and Jason Werth got things going for me last night by going 2-for-8 with an RBI.  Scoreboard.

Cavs salary before Joe Smith: $90.329 million
    2008-09 Salary Cap: $58.68

    Difference: $31.649

Even subtracting out E-Snow’s $7.31 million contract (not $11 million – $11 million is the total savings), the Cavs still would have been $24.339 million (approx) over the cap. Had the league approved this before the season, it would have had zero affect on the Cavaliers’ free agent options.

All this does is save Dan Gilbert some cash, which is a good thing.
