While We’re Waiting… Where the Grinch has Stolen OSU’s Christmas

While We’re Waiting is your first cup of Cleveland sports coffee for the day. Sip on these WFNYish pieces from around the net while your first our first post finishes cooking. Seen something you think we should feature here? Send it to our tips line- tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

I have a hard time believing that championships mean more to fans than the players that earn them. Once again, I was wrong- “While all of the charges sting, the fact that players sold Gold Pants is perhaps most damning and will probably go a long way to tipping those that have supported Pryor beyond all of the gaffes and breakdowns in play to the other side, where some were actually looking forward to the Braxton Miller era.” [Eleven Warriors] [Read more...]

So that’s it for another year of Christmas giveaways. Yesterday, Max won the last set of Tribe ticket vouchers. Congratulations to Max and all of our winners.

And thank you again. The reason we do these giveaways is because we’re very thankful for all of you that frequent this site. It’s been a wild year in Cleveland sports, and WFNY has tried to stay on top of it with you. The more successful the site becomes, the more we are able to give back.

12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas: Day 12

Last day of the contest!

We’ve given away some fantastic prizes so far. From Hillis and McCoy jerseys, to an autographed Joe Haden mini-helmet, plus all kinds of ticket packages and even a Jake Taylor #7 Tribe jersey. (Excellent choice Eli!) There have been books by Terry Pluto and Thunder Hillis shirts from WFNY. And it was all to say thank you for making WFNY your first destination for Cleveland sports news and opinions.

Yesterday’s winner was Horace, who would nickname TJ Ward “the disembowler”. Not sure if that one will stick or not, but thanks for the entry! Horace takes home the Terry Pluto book and $75 in WFNY Ticket gift certs.

Are you ready for your last chance this year?

12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas- Day 11

Every year about this time you will likely hear someone say “I can’t believe it’s Christmas already.” That person will likely not be a child. Alas, time does fly. Before you know it, pitchers and catchers will report to camp. Then as the NBA season grinds along, we’ll take a weekend and dream big dreams during the NFL draft. Sometime around July 4th we’ll start getting excited for training camp while we sit enjoying the sun out in the left field bleachers. Such is the life cycle of a Cleveland sports fan.

Perhaps while you are at that Tribe game you’ll run into Eli. He won the ticket vouchers and Tribe jersey in yesterday’s giveaway. Make sure to say hello. And look for TD and Jon while you’re at it.

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 10

Not the best of sports weekends, but I know what can cheer up even the most downtrodden of Cleveland sports fans- free stuff!

Congratulations to Phil, who was randomly selected to win Friday’s giveaway. Phil will be getting $75 in WFNY Ticket money. Will Phil choose one of the 2 remaining Browns home games? Perhaps a Cavaliers game? Blue Jackets? It’s up to him.

Only 3 more giveaway days left. The tension is getting thick. Who will win today?

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 9

Wow, lots of entries in yesterday’s contest. I guess you guys (and gals) like Colt McCoy huh?

Dr. Cleveland was the randomly selected winner yesterday, so he’ll be collecting the Colt McCoy jersey. Dr. Cleveland’s most memorable Browns win was the MNF affair against the Giants. It was a popular choice, as was the Steeler game from last season. I have to say reading through those entries was a bit of an eye opener for me. So many of our readers are in the age range that they just don’t remember when the Browns were contenders. I feel old now. Maybe I need a nap.

But no time for naps, we’ve got another giveaway to get to!

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 8

Getting close to the end of the week, and getting closer to the end of our 12 Days giveaway. So sad that Christmas comes but once a year.

Yesterday’s winner was Greg. His favorite sports movie is Remember the Titans. A solid choice, but not the most popular among WFNYers. That distinction goes to Major League of course! Greg won the Tribe ticket vouchers, the Terry Pluto book, and his choice of WFNY t-shirts. He went with the Mark Price is Right model. Now that’s a solid choice Greg.

Greg joins the other six winners on the short list of people no longer eligible for today’s prize. Which means the great majority of you reading this are still eligible! On to today’s contest…

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 7

I don’t know that we will ever top yesterday’s contest question. You guys were absolutely amazing. I was going to list a few of my favorites, but when I went back through them I couldn’t narrow the list down enough! Great stuff gang. I don’t know that there is any chance for a WFNY restaurant, but a cookbook huh? Hmmmm….

The end result of yesterday’s contest is that Bryce was randomly selected and won the Peyton Hillis jersey! Congratulations Bryce.

A quick word- remember that you are only eligible to enter once per day. You can comment on the question all you want. On your official entry restate the question. Each time you comment after that don’t restate the question. Again, it helps me differentiate.

A Cleveland Sports Fan Gift Guide

I’ve been told I’m impossible to shop for. Maybe it’s because I’m a guy. Maybe it’s because I’m pretty content with what I have. It got me thinking that there are probably a ton of you out there in the same boat. Family members keep asking you what you want for Christmas, and you just don’t know what to tell them. If you are like me, you feel bad asking anyone to pay good money for things that aren’t necessities. Let’s face it sports fans, some of the nice stuff we’d like to have we would never buy ourselves.

So let me ask for you. Here’s a gift guide you can pass along to your wife or family members. Got suggestions for something I missed? Put ‘em in the comments. Remember, these suggestions are for the Cleveland sports FAN. If you are getting something for the casual sports watcher, these may not be for them.

1. Give them an event.

Look, sports are an event. It’s about being there. Seeing the sites, smelling the smells, and being loud with thousands of your closest friends that you’ve never met. It’s about where you go to eat before or after the event, and sharing stories of previous experiences. If the fan in your life watches the games on TV, send them to a game. Let them pick a buddy and make the trek to the stadium. Give ‘em a team shop gift card to use while they are at the game. That way they have to get a souvenir. Make it an event. [Read more...]

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 6

We’re at the half way point in our Christmas giveaway. Seems like we’re just getting started!

Yesterday, DJ was randomly selected to win the WFNY Tickets package worth $75 and a Cavaliers player t-shirt. If DJ could go back in time to watch any Cleveland game, he would choose the infamous Red Right 88 game. There were several interesting choices yesterday. Lot’s of 90′s Indians games. Several people interested in seeing The Shot, and of course plenty of fans wanting to go back and see the Browns win the ’64 title. Ah, the good old days.

You guys are doing a great job with the formatting this year. Bravo. Remember, restate the question and then answer the question. Piece of cake. Let’s get to today’s giveaway-

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 5

We’re not going to let a couple of bad games yesterday ruin our Christmas cheer. At least, I’m not…

Friday’s contest winner was Brian (who has already been contacted through email; I know there are several Brians) who would have an outfield of Choo, Lofton and Sizemore if he had his wish.

We’re going to be giving away some really great stuff this week. No question this is the best 12 Days giveaway since the site began as we’ve already given away tickets and a Joe Haden autographed helmet.

More goodies to come, so let’s get to today’s stuff!

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 4

Three days down already!

Congratulations to Rob, who was randomly selected to win the Joe Haden autographed Browns mini-helmet! Some great answers to yesterday’s question by the way. Rob thought it would be a good idea to visit Ray Chapman’s grave on the free agent visit. Not sure that would woo too many pitchers to sign with the Tribe, but it was creative.

Before we get to today’s contest let me remind you that we run the 12 Days giveaways only during the week, so you won’t see one this weekend. Good job on the answer formatting yesterday by the way.

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 3

Congratulations are in order to Historycat, random winner of yesterday’s 12 Days giveaway! If Historycat had his way, we’d all be winners. His response- “You get to have three Cleveland sports stars to your house for dinner from any era. Which three would you choose? 1. Dolan 2. Gilbert 3. Any Contract attorney from IMG. (With a big bottle of rum, if that what it takes for Gilbert to walk out with a new baseball team.) Sounds good to us!

Before we move on to today’s contest, let me say thanks for formatting your answers correctly! Most all of them were done perfectly. Can’t complain about a couple out of 200+! The format again- restate the question of the day and then answer the question. Piece of cake. Let’s get on to today’s giveaway.

12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas- Day 2

The nip in the air, the snow flying, sounds like Christmas time or Indians baseball in May!

It’s day 2 in our 12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas giveaway! Yesterday’s winner, selected by random number generator was Mark Cesarik who selected Mike Jackson as his favorite Tribe relief pitcher. (Very underrated choice there Mark.)

Before we get to today’s contest, I have to implore you to please use the correct format in your entries. Restate the question first, and then add your answer. This helps me distinguish between actual entries and comments on other people’s answers. Thanks! Alright, let’s get to today’s giveaway!

12 Days of Cleveland Fan Christmas: Day 1

It’s back.

When we launched the site at the end of January in 2008 we had no idea what to expect. We were blown away that first year by the response and community that had established. In order to say thank you, we decided to give away some things to you, our loyal readers.

Little did we know then that we were starting a tradition.

So starting today, we are again saying thank you for a great year by giving you the chance to win some great prizes. You may enter every day of the contest, but each household is only eligible to win once. In order to make your entry an official entry, all you have to do is comment on the post by 1) restating the question of the day, and 2) answering the question. That’s it. [Read more...]
