While We’re Waiting…Obama wants Vernon Davis in Chicago and Iverson wants to play

Obama wants Vernon Davis: “49ers tight end Vernon Davis has become one of the team’s most important players.  If President Obama has his way, Davis will be playing for another team. The Chicago Bears.

At a recent fund-raising event in California, Davis spoke to supporters about Obama.  And then Obama spoke about Davis.

“I want to thank Vernon Davis for being here. If you want to come and play for the Bears, you are welcome to do it,” Obama said, according to KNTV-TV (via NFL.com).” [PFT / Mike Florio]

Latest on Allen Iverson:  ”Jorge Hernandez was certain Allen Iverson would put basketball on the map in Venezuela—up until this morning. Hernandez, co-owner of Guaros de Lara in the Venezuelan League, was to introduce Iverson todays the team’s new point guard. Playing alongside Smush Parker, Iverson would bring unprecedented attention to Guaros.

“Everything was ready for his debut on Wednesday,” Hernandez told Venezuelan sports newspaper, Lider en Deportes. But Hernandez spoke too soon.

At 9 a.m. this morning, Hernandez received a call and was told that Iverson “does not want to leave the United States.” Speculation is that Iverson’s legal problems are keeping him in US for the time being.

Iverson’s most recent return to basketball has been bumpy to say the least. The Lakers considered signing Iverson this year, but Iverson dismissed L.A. when they asked him to play in the D-League first.”  [SLAM / Ryne Nelson]

Jeremy Lin’s financial influence: “The power of Jeremy Lin seems to know no boundaries. He is boosting ticket prices across the NBA. He might be the impetus for a deal between Time Warner and MSG. And maybe most impressively, he triggered a sell-out at the Air Canada Center for the New York Knicks game against the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night when the Linsanity show hit the road. Yes, a sell-out for the 9-21 Raptors who got a first-hand look at the movement sweeping the globe when Lin buried a three-pointer with 0.5 seconds left to win the game.

But when does Jeremy Lin get paid for giving the Knicks and NBA a shot in the arm? His contract this season became fully guaranteed this week and is worth $762,000. He’ll earn 80% of that as the NBA lockout trimmed the 2011-12 season to 66 games from 82. Lin’s only endorsement deal is with Nike which pays him little. Most NBA shoe contracts are for very small amounts of cash or just merchandise for all but the game’s stars.

Last month we looked at the NBA’s top-earning players in terms of salary and endorsements led by Kobe Bryant at $53 million. The cut-off for the top 10 was $22 million. All of these players are veterans and earn playing salaries of at least $15 million.”  [Forbes / Kurt Badenhouse]

Happy belated to Jim Brown:  ”Arguably the greatest football player to ever live, former Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown turned 76 today.

The Hall of Famer finished his NFL career with 12,312 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns in nine seasons. He was an 8-time rushing champion, 9-time Pro Bowl selection, 8-time First-Team All-Pro selection, 3-time MVP, and won the NFL Championship in 1964.

While he no longer serves a role within the organization, and left in somewhat ugly fashion, he still remains the greatest player in Cleveland Browns – and perhaps NFL – history.

Brown also shares his birthday with Michael Jordan, making February 17 quite possibly the best day to be born with dreams of becoming a professional athlete.” [Dawg Poud Daily / Steve DiMatteo]

While We’re Waiting…on trading up for RGIII and LeBron’s return to CLE

McShay says Browns will have to trade up for RGIII: “The Cleveland Browns have the fourth overall pick, but that won’t be high enough to draft Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said in a conference call Thursday.

He believes the Browns must trade up to the No. 2 pick if they want to select the Heisman Trophy winner. And, if Cleveland doesn’t do it, McShay expects another team to leapfrog the Browns for RG3.

“I think he’s every bit worth the [No. 2] pick,” McShay said. “I’ve got him as the third prospect overall in this class, and I think that if the Browns want him, they need to move up and get him. I’ll be surprised if he lasts until four, and I’ll be even surprised if he gets to No. 3 because I think that No. 2 pick is up for public auction. I think the Rams are going to get a good deal to move back and can still get a player they want at tackle or wide receiver. And if it’s not Cleveland, then it’s probably going to be Washington [at No. 6] right behind them leapfrogging Cleveland to get up to No. 2.”

McShay said the Browns might be able to trade the fourth overall pick and their second-rounder (No. 37) to the Rams in exchange for the No. 2 selection. But, according to the draft value chart, the Browns would have to trade both their first-round picks (Nos. 4 and 22 overall) and their sixth-rounder to the Rams to move up to No. 2.” [ESPN / Jamison Hensley[Read more...]

While We’re Waiting…Kiper Says Browns Draft RGIII, And Previewing Today’s Title Games

With the 4th Pick, Mel Kiper says Browns take Robert Griffin III: “If a team moves ahead of the Browns for Griffin, they also could be in play for Blackmon, or even the guy I have at No. 5, Trent Richardson. However, the questions on Colt McCoy’s ceiling as a starting NFL quarterback are getting louder, and if the Browns don’t go after a solution such asMatt Flynn, a quarterback certainly could be in play here. Griffin made big strides this past season, particularly with his deep accuracy. He is a big-time athlete at the quarterback position but has developed a very good pocket presence and the ability to read the game, and his big arm comes with a nice touch on intermediate throws. He is a leader and has intangibles that should really impress evaluators during the draft process.” [Mel Kiper / ESPN] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting…Fausto Apologizes, Tribe Trades for Slowey, And On Cavs Last Rebuild

On Tribe’s deal for Kevin Slowey: “The Cleveland Indians haven’t had the most exciting offseason in the history of the franchise, though things are certainly changing. Pitcher Fausto Carmona was arrested for actually being Roberto Hernandez Heredia on Thursday and, to follow that up Friday, the Indians traded for Kevin Slowey from the Colorado Rockies.

Slowey doesn’t elicit quite the response that Carmona’s false identity scandal did, but the former starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins shouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to Cleveland’s pitching staff this season. Slowey’s started 90 games in his career, compiling 39 wins and 29 losses despite an 0-8 season with the Minnesota Twins last year.

To acquire the 27-year-old Slowey, the Indians shipped Zach Putnam to the Rockies, according to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi.”  [Scott Schroeder / SB Nation] [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Kevin Kolb, LeBron’s Late Struggles and Cheering for a Cavalier Playoff Berth

I’m not too big on Mr. Kolb either. There is one area where Kolb would fit in with the Browns, however, as the Cardinals went from Week 2 until Week 17 without scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Arizona scored on its opening drive in Week 1 and on a 37-yard drive in Week 2, then went dry in the first quarter until the final week of the season, according to azcardinals.com. The team only scored 36 first-quarter points all season.

Sound familiar, Browns fans?

There is also the very real possibility that the fifth-year quarterback from Houston just isn’t that good. Kolb completed 57 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions this year – and that was with throwing to Larry Fitzgerald. (We just checked the roster and the Browns don’t have Larry Fitzgerald).

Plus you have to wonder why the Eagles decided to give $40 million in guaranteed money to a quarterback, Michael Vick, who has only played a full season once in his NFL career rather than keep a quarterback they nurtured on their roster for four years.

If Kolb is released – again, a big if – and the Browns want to take a look at him on a one-year, very team friendly contract, that may not be all that bad if they think he is a talented quarterback worth looking at.

But if they are only looking at him because he played with the Eagles then they’ve lost us. [Thomas Moore/The Cleveland Fan]

While We’re Waiting…Quiet Browns Offseason, Indians Offseason Improvements, Romeo Crennel Returns!

Can there really be such a thing a a quiet offseason in Browns town? “When did this become Browns fans’ last stand at the Alamo?

Are we really wondering about blowing everything up, or spending a bazillion dollars in free agency next year, or intimating that Pat Shurmur should be fired?

Maybe the news that they plan to hire an offensive coordinator isn’t enough to satisfy the bloodlust we’ve developed over the past four years.

Think about it—this very well could be the most boring offseason the Browns have had since 2008. We’ve seen a major player get hired or fired every year since then. Here’s a recap of that carnage up until now, starting in 1999, and getting pretty aggressive as we arrive at the present.” [Jimmy Weinland/Dawg Pound Daily]

Updates on Browns injuries fresh from yesterday’s press conference, beginning with a look at this intriguing backup: “Running back Brandon Jackson passed his exit physical after being placed on the injured reserve in the preseason with turf toe. That means he will be ready to go for the team’s offseason programs, and if the team doesn’t re-sign Peyton Hillis, he would become the team’s starting running back.” [Chris Pokorny/Dawgs By Nature]

A local TV station blog post petitions for McCoy to remain as the QB: “So, here it is: Colt McCoy’s stats are BETTER than four Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks– all of whom won Super Bowls — after 16 starts in the NFL. Even BETTER than two former Browns heroes who played QB.” [Tim Misson/News Net 5] [Read more...]

About how the Cavs fell flat in Canada: “Mama said there’d be days like this. The Cavs lost handedly to the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre on the back end of their first back-to-back of the season. …Well, Kyrie Irving came back to Earth with a vengeance. The rook put up 12 points on 13 shots and mustered only four assists. This game was reminiscent of his debut: Irving was outplayed by Jose Calderon, stopped at the rim by Toronto’s bigs, and took a handful of ill-advised shots.” [Colin McGowan/Cavs: The Blog]

More on how Seneca Wallace failed with his late-season opportunity: “Perhaps if Wallace played one level better than Colt McCoy, the Browns win a few games and Wallace gets a chance to further prove himself in 2012. Wallace posted a weak 50.27 Real Quarterback Rating. This includes completing only two of 14 passes attempted to Greg Little or Mohamed Maasquoi.” [Adam Dobrowolski/Cold Hard Football Facts] [Read more...]

“Though he still had a decent game, it didn’t look like Braxton matured much more than any of his teammates during bowl practices. His final statline read 18/23 through the air for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns but he was 12/17 with just 80 yards until a last gasp drive against Florida’s prevent defense saw him pad his numbers with 6/6 for 82 yards. Passing accuracy really wasn’t the issue today though he did overthrow a wide open Posey for a sure 23 yard touchdown that would’ve tied the game at 14 late in the 1st half. Windy or not, the throw needed to be a touch pass as there wasn’t a Gator defender within 10 yards of DeVier but Miller threw a laser high and outside.

The biggest area of opportunity from this game, as it has been with many others, was a lack of pocket awareness. Yes, the pass pro was shaky at times but Braxton often had plenty of time to throw, either to a receiver or simply to get rid of it, but instead took a sack.” [Lauderback/Eleven Warriors] [Read more...]

“How do we evaluate the job Shurmur did in his first year? I like to ask myself if there are any redeeming qualities when it comes to keeping a head coach. In other words, “is there something I can look back at on this season and say, ‘Shurmur did [this] well.’?” The Browns played well defensively, but I don’t see how you can directly attribute that to the “offensive-minded” Shurmur. Shurmur was brought here to install the West Coast Offense. After 16 games, I don’t see how anyone can say they were encouraged by the offense this year. The Browns scored 218 points all season. The only two teams who scored less were the Chiefs and the Rams, and they are both undergoing coaching changes.” [Pokorny/Dawgs by Nature] [Read more...]

Been saying this for a while. Starting to really wonder. “I hate to be this guy, but the biggest “misstep” the Cavs could make this year would be winning a few too many games and not landing Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond. We need one more elite guy to develop into a contender. Dan Gilbert can find us the supplementary guys (e.g. the Iguodala’s of the world)…and I’m hoping we need only one more draft to hit on a second star.” [Braun/Cavs the Blog] [Read more...]

Eleven Warriors has the Top 11 Moments of the Year for Buckeye Fans, including #2 about Bo Ryan and dealing with it, “The home fans were not disappointed as the Buckeyes used two big first half runs to turn what had been a relatively close game into a blowout. The team would go on to shoot a blistering 68% from the field for the game, including an insane 93% from downtown (14/15) in a 93-65 laugher, that concluded a perfect season at home for Ohio State.” [Eleven Warriors]

Next, Chris Pokorny at Dawgs By Nature covers Seneca Wallace and his opinion that he maybe should have had a shot at starting for the Browns earlier than Week 15, “”At the end of the day, I can control what I can control,” said Wallace. “Yeah, I get frustrated that, hey, I feel like I deserve a shot or I want a shot.” … Asked if he should he have a chance to compete for the starting job next season, Wallace said: “Maybe so. I don’t know. I’ll let you guys evaluate that.” [Dawgs By Nature]

Dawgs by Nature also recapped the playoff and draft order scenarios that are the top storylines for this Sunday.

UniWatch has a new installment, which includes the special Rose Bowl uniforms for both Wisconsin and Oregon.

If you’re looking for some humor, Brian Tarcy made some Week 17 NFL picks, including a Browns’ victory.

Finally, Mo Williams just cannot catch a break in Los Angeles. After getting pushed behind Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups on the depth chart, the PA announcer can’t even remember his name.

While We’re Waiting… Tristan Thompson Q&A, Peyton Hillis the Madden Curse victim, and the Browns defense

Leading off, our own Brendan Bowers caught up with Tristan Thompson for SLAM Magazine, and when asked about starting for the Cavs being a goal right now, Tristan replied “No, my focus is clearly on winning basketball games for the Cavs and getting better everyday. I think those are the two most important things. Starting is just a position. At the end of the day, I’m a basketball player, and I’m a basketball player who just wants to win. So winning trumps everything, and getting better everyday is how I feel like I can help us do that. The whole starting or not starting doesn’t faze me at all because I just play basketball for the love of the game. Whenever Coach Scott wants to put me in, or whatever unit he wants to put me on, I know he’s going to make the right decision so I’m not worried about it.” [SLAM Online]

Chris Pokorny at Dawgs by Nature captured some of Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron’s quotes from Thursday’s media session, including some thoughts on his defensive line, “”You’ve talked about Phil (Taylor) a lot. I think Phil has grown a lot through the course of the year. In the last five or six games he’s played pretty consistently and played well. He seems to be getting stronger. This will be a huge test obviously again this Sunday. Jabaal (Sheard) has just played well from the beginning to the end. Rube’s (Ahtyba Rubin) played well from the beginning to the end. At the right defensive end, Jayme (Mitchell) got hurt and then we struggled for a while.” [Dawgs by Nature]

Shutdown Corner published a Peyton Hillis quote about his tough season and the role he thinks the Madden Curse played in it, “”No doubt about it, things haven’t worked to my favor this year. There’s a few things that happened that made me believe in curses. Ain’t no doubt about it.”" ESPN’s AFC North Blog also has this about Hillis, “The Cleveland Browns’ Peyton Hillis has recently looked like the running back from last season. He has a total of 211 rushing yards in two games after producing just 346 yards rushing in his previous seven this season (that’s 49.4 yards per game). Hillis is once again powering his way up the middle of defenses. He has 57 carries in between the tackles the last four games; no other player has more than 38 over that span, according to ESPN Stats & Information.”

Let’s Go Tribe has an entertaining article chronicling the frustration of a quiet offseason for the Tribe and a quiet landscape in general for MLB right now.

And finally, from Ball Don’t Lie, former Cleveland Cavalier Shaq’s willing to give you one thousand dollars! The catch: you need to get a tattoo, but not just any tattoo.

A good read about MVP voting and year by year snubs- “The Cleveland Indians from 1994 to 2002 had some of the most amazing offensive lineups in baseball history. They reached two World Series. They led the league in runs scored three times and finished second another three. They had players lead the league in runs (Albert Belle, Robbie Alomar), hits (Kenny Lofton), doubles (Belle), triples (Kenny Lofton), homers (Belle), RBIs (MannyBManny, Albert Belle), OPS (MannyBManny, Thome), stolen bases (Lofton), slugging percentage (Belle, MannyBManny, Thome) and walks (Thome). They did not have a single player win the MVP award.

I don’t like RBIs as a defining statistics, but we know the MVP voters do. In 1999, Manny Ramirez drove in ONE HUNDRED SIXTY FIVE. That was the most in baseball since Jimmie Foxx. Jimmie Bleepin’ Foxx. He finished tied for THIRD in the MVP balloting. Whew. What does an enigma have to do around here to get some respect?” [Posnanski/SI.com] [Read more...]

“The University of Akron won one football game in 2011. A few of you knew that. Most of you didn’t — or more likely didn’t care. Terry Bowden knows all of that, certainly he does now. Bowden was hired as Akron’s new coach last week, a month after the job came open and a week or so after he was first contacted about the opening. He was introduced by the school at a news conference Wednesday. He’d been coaching at Division II North Alabama.

But he made his name in the 1990s in the SEC, at Auburn. And I North Alabama is 500 football miles from the football hotbed that won the BCS championship just a season ago, Akron is 5,000 miles away from it.” [Jackson/FSO] [Read more...]
