WFNY Weighs in on the Browns 2012 NFL Draft

As I get further and further along in my life as an NFL fan and critic, the letter grade thing the day after the draft starts to irk me a little bit. So, instead of just doing letter grades, I tried to put some questions together that are hopefully a little more nuanced. In the end, nobody knows if any of the players from this draft will actually work out. All you can grade on is the effort, strategy and implications immediately thereafter.

Note on comments: We’d like to do something different on this post. Please copy the questions (They’ll be in copy/paste format at the bottom) and give us your take in the same format that we used. Regular comments are allowed, but it’d be nice to have everyone weigh in using the same questions.

1. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) what is your perception of the Browns’ 2012 draft?

Jacob: I’d give it maybe a 5. I was not particularly happy about the value we got throughout in picking Brandon Weeden early, choosing Mitchell Schwartz over other options and then the bonehead move of John Hughes. You can’t get a good draft rating when you botch up three of your first four picks. [Read more...]

NFL Draft: Highlights from Remaining Browns Draft Pick Conference Calls

Just as Rick did yesterday with the thoughts from the first six picks, I’m sharing here some of the conference call highlights from the later NFL Draft picks by the Cleveland Browns.

OL Ryan Miller, Colorado – fifth round, pick #160

(On if the Browns told him where he would play)- “They took me as an o-lineman. I’ll play guard or tackle. One of my better suits is that I’m versatile.”

Undrafted Free Agent Recap: Browns Look for WR, OL and DB Help

According to Pat Shurmur after the draft, the Browns planned on adding roughly about 15 new players to the roster via undrafted free agency. We all know now about the drafted players that the team picked up over the last few days, so let’s look at the various players that reports are linking to Berea.

Adding up the positions, it appears the Browns have nabbed three more WRs, four more OLs and three more DBs. The remaining positions are one DE and two LBs. Looking back at the team’s main pre-draft needs — QB, RB, OT, WR, DB, OLB — this makes perfect sense.

Here’s the current list of 14 according mostly to www.mockingthedraft.com: [Read more...]

NFL Draft: Cleveland selections talk about being Browns

The Browns have made six selections to this point in the draft. They are all expected to contribute something to the team this year. Here’s what they had to say about joining the Browns. [Read more...]

Cleveland Browns Draft Reset: Day Three

After two days, your Cleveland Browns have been among the most active NFL franchises thus far during the NFL Draft. In terms of number of trades, peculiar selections and noteworthy storylines, the Browns have been one of the leading organizations in the past 40 hours. Will that eventually equate to winning football come September? Who knows, but we all at least have one more day in which we can celebrate our favorite past time of the April draft.

Looking forward, here are the remaining picks the Browns have in the third and final day of the draft, which begins at 12 p.m. EST today:

-Round 4, pick 5
-Round 4, pick 25 [Read more...]

Video: Browns get their tackle, taking Mitchell Schwartz

As Kirk let us all know earlier, the Cleveland Browns got giant many Mitchell Schwartz. He is a 6’5″ 320 pound monster who Mike Mayock called a “plug-and-play” right tackle. Of course the Browns could have gone with either offensive line or wide receiver with their second rounder. I guess the Browns feel their chances of getting a receiver are still good later. But let’s learn more about Mitchell Schwartz.

The talk about Schwartz is that he might have been a bit overmatched at times as a left tackle for Cal. He played two years with Alex Mack, incidentally. He isn’t known for his athleticism and certainly has some room to improve technique types of things. On the positive side of things he is from a football family. His brother Geoff plays offensive line for the Carolina Panthers. He is known for his work ethic and maturity according to most NFL draft sites. While he played left tackle at Cal out of necessity, he has always seemingly projected as a right tackle in the NFL among front offices and draft gurus. [Read more...]

Cleveland Browns Draft Reset

Regardless of your take on the first round of the draft, the Browns and the rest of the NFL get ready to go back to work tonight for rounds two and three. The Browns have the fifth pick in the second round (37th overall) , and the fourth pick in the third round (67th overall). Here are the picks they have left after the trade with the Vikings yesterday-

-Round 2, pick 5

-Round 3, pick 4

-Round 4, pick 5

-Round 5, pick 25

-Round 6, pick 34

-Round 6, pick 35

-Round 7, pick 38

-Round 7, pick 30

The sixth and seventh round picks are compensatory, which means they cannot be traded. They are also towards the end of those rounds and if we’re honest don’t hold a ton of value for potential contributors to the team this year. At best those picks are for developing players. [Read more...]

Craig and Rick Make a Browns Bet

Yesterday before the draft even started, Rick and I engaged in a friendly bet. It is so friendly in fact that we never even discussed any kind of payoff. Still it is an interesting one.

The Cleveland Browns will line up against the Washington Redskins in week 15 next season in Cleveland Browns stadium. On December 16th, to be exact. Here’s the bet. When those teams go into the game, who will be favored in Vegas? I say the Browns will be and Rick is betting that the RG3-led Redskins will be. [Read more...]

Browns took the risks and we’ll see about the rewards

The good news is that there is nothing to talk about with regard to the Trent Richardson pick at three. The Cleveland Browns paid a price and they got a guy they absolutely wanted and needed to help kick-start a mostly dead offense from 2011. Yes, the Browns paid with some lower round picks to make it happen, but this is Heckert’s M.O. to a large extent. It is a strategy that I mostly agree with too. If you don’t always want to be subject to the actions of others, you need to control your own destiny. Sometimes that means getting Phil Taylor. Other times that means getting Montario Hardesty. Both times it leaves me confident that at least Tom Heckert got who he wanted. That brings us to Brandon Weeden.

Brandon Weeden is a guy that the Browns obviously wanted. The only question is how much? Did they want him more than Michael Floyd (13th to the Cards) and Kendall Wright (20th to the Titans?) Nobody knows for sure, but I would bet the Browns wanted Floyd if they could have found a way to get him. I would also bet the same with Kendall Wright. Additionally, we can say conclusively that the Browns wanted Brandon Weeden more than they wanted Riley Reiff who was selected with the pick after the Browns at number 23. We can also say conclusively that the Browns wanted Brandon Weeden more than they wanted to roll the dice going forward with Colt McCoy. [Read more...]

What Is The Rush To Trade Colt McCoy?

The Browns have drafted the guy who they now view as their latest Quarterback of the future, Brandon Weeden out of Oklahoma State. He has the size and the arm strength that they covet for the West Coast offense. He is clearly here to play from the start. You don’t draft a 28-year-old quarterback to sit for a year or two and learn. If this is the guy that Tom Heckert and Mike Holmgren believe in, then lets see what he has on opening day.

That leaves the Browns with two other QBs who now have uncertain futures. Colt McCoy, the now deposed starter, and the backup for the last two seasons, Seneca Wallace.

During last night’s press conference, Heckert was asked a pointed question; what is the future of McCoy with the organization and would they consider trading him now that Weeden was brought in. ”

(A trade is)something we’ll talk about tonight and tomorrow,” he said.

The night turned to morning, and Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer was reporting that the Browns were talking to Green Bay about a possible trade of McCoy. The Packers lost their backup, Matt Flynn, to free agency, and just have former Texas Tech great Graham Harrell behind him. My question is this – what is the rush to get rid of McCoy so quickly? [Read more...]

NFL Draft: Cleveland’s Tom Heckert Came to Play

Often criticized for a passive approach to team-building, the Cleveland Browns entered Thursday night’s NFL Draft with a plan in place. With a fan base seemingly relegated to a feeling of pre-draft disappointment, Tom Heckert and his staff would not let his players get away from him, even if the cost would wind up being a little more than originally expected.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hot after Alabama’s Trent Richardson, and Heckert not willing to gamble on the potential loss of a franchise running back, we became aware of the trade which would allow the Browns to move up to secure their guy. Richardson, clad in a light brown suit and a Brown tie — one which would later look pretty sharp with his orange and brown hat — caught wind of the trade live on the red carpet of Radio City Music Hall. As it was, the Browns offense received a considerable shot in the arm before the clock struck 8pm.

Browns Select Trent Richardson #3 in the 2012 NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns traded with the Minnesota Vikings in order to get it done. In the end, they just needed to trade a bit extra to ensure they got their guy. Their guy turns out to be Trent Richardson, the No. 1 running back on the board out of Alabama.

Richardson shouldn’t be unfamiliar to Browns fans. We’ve been talking about him ever since the team failed to trade for RG3.

So Trent is the guy. The Browns have a guy to hand the ball to this upcoming season even with the departure of Peyton Hillis.

They may have needed a trade to make sure they kept Richardson away from teams like Tampa Bay, but there’s no doubting one thing. The Cleveland Browns got the guy they wanted.

Barring any trades or other moves, the Cleveland Browns have a bit of a wait until they get to pick again at No. 22 with Atlanta’s first round pick.

The Relief of the Arrival of Draft Day

I really did feel like something of a dummy when the Redskins won the trade battle for the rights to draft Robert Griffin III. I bought into a player and knew that the Browns had the weapons to make the trade happen. When they failed to get it done, I was sad for myself even as I could see some positives for the Browns for not giving up as much as the Redskins did. I was almost more upset that I spent so much time talking about a guy who would never become a Cleveland Brown. That was back when the pre-draft hype was actually fun. Somewhere along the line this turned from being really fun to causing stress and consternation, if not being just downright annoying.

You can figure out exactly where it happened for me because I started reminding myself that this was supposed to be fun in the posts. I lied to you all and said I was still enjoying myself. It’s like when you go bowling once per year and you’re really excited for it. You rent your shoes get a pitcher of beer and play a few games. Then because you haven’t bowled a lot your shoulder starts to groan a bit. Those energetic skips down the lane turn into chores. You’re still bowling and that should be fun, but the beer is low in the pitcher and nearly room temperature. It’s just over. You’ll remember only the fun parts nine or ten months later when you decide that it would be really fun to go bowling again, but if you thought really hard about it you’d actually remember the sore shoulder, warm beer and the strange smell of chemical shoe spray. Is Jason Pinkston the Browns true plan at right tackle?

From Jason Pinkston's Twitter - Doing Work

According to an article by Pat McManamon from March 30th there probably isn’t anyone on the Browns working harder this off-season than offensive lineman Jason Pinkston. Pinkston is headed into his sophomore season as an NFL player after being selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the NFL draft. He was thrust into a starting position as a rookie when Eric Steinbach went under the knife for back surgery. After an uneven but overall promising first year, how does Pinkston respond? He jumps into training with LeCharles Bentley where the workouts are hard, the training is unpredictable and comprehensive to even include diet. Is this just a guy working to get better at guard, or is Pinkston readying himself for a shot to be the Cleveland Browns’ right tackle this year?

Maybe I am thinking way too much about all this. The Browns – most notably Pat Shurmur – have stated time and again that they like Pinkston as offensive guard. The Browns’ actions backed this up when they cut ties with Eric Steinbach. That being said, the door isn’t closed on Steinbach returning for less money than he was scheduled to make.  Heading into the draft where the Browns want everyone to think that right tackle is a major position of need, why would they tip their hand that a former left tackle from Pittsburgh was poised to make the move to right tackle in the off-season?
