Reports: Dan Gilbert to Buy Cleveland Gladiators

Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert is slowly adding to his stable of sports franchises with the recent report by Cleveland Scene’s Vince Grzegorek stating that he is in line to complete a purchase of the Cleveland Gladiators, the region’s Arena Football League franchise.

Crain’s Cleveland has piled on to Grzegorek’s news earlier this morning, saying that, though nothing is imminent, the two sides could eventually reach an agreement that would net Gilbert a franchise that would play their contests during the months in which his other two teams are in the midst of an offseason.

Cavaliers vs Heat Postmortem: LeBron Gets Last Laugh

The Cavaliers should have replaced the new uniforms with welcome mats tonight. LeBron and his Heat teammates looked like they were right at home even as the fans screamed and cursed their every move. The final score was Miami 118, Cleveland 90. It really wasn’t that close. LeBron scored 38 points in three quarters, while joking and chatting with members of the Cavaliers bench during timeouts and free throws.

We’ll have full coverage tomorrow, but feel free to post your comments here.

[Update: thought I'd throw in some Barkley quotes from halftime.]

Barkley: “We can be friends after the game. This guy is dissing us he told us we weren’t good enough, but every timeout he comes to our bench laughing and joking with us.”

“The city of Cleveland should take a bow they were angry they were upset there is really nothing profane.”

“These Cavaliers players, they’re not playing with any animosity, they don’t have any chip on their shoulder, and I think they are doing a disservice to these fans and themselves.”

Weekend Wrapup – Things happened.

cleveland_skyline_aug_2006

Here’s a weekend recap for those of you who like to read the things I write:

The Browns managed to turn 5 draft picks into 11 players in this year’s Draft.  Below is the list of the players that the Browns obtained.  More detailed analysis will be forthcoming during the week from the folks who know the NFL much better than I.  The odds are against TD making a Browns post.

1st Round, pick 21: Alex Mack, C – California (traded down 3 times from #5)

2nd Round, pick 4: Brian Robiskie, WR – Ohio State [Read more...]

Well, This Isn’t Confusing Or Anything…

Went over to ESPN to see who won the Gladiators/Soul game. This came up…

Yeah, that’s the correct game write-up, Philly won 70-35. But what’s with the banner graphic? [Read more...]

Are You Ready…For Something Footballish?

clevelandgladiatorslogo.gifWe don’t pretend to be Arena football experts here at WFNY. And while the Gladiators have the Cleveland connection working with Bernie Kosar, and occasionally good write-ups, Arena fever has yet to infect this portion of the net.

The Gladiators play the Philadelphia Soul this afternoon for a spot in the ArenaBowl (XXII if you are keeping score at home). Kick-off is at 1pm. I’m pulling for the Gladiators, if for no other reason than to spite Jon Bon Jovi for that Keep The Faith album I wasted money on 15 years ago. But here’s a preview from someone who actually watches the sport-

The History

When the 2008 schedule first came out no one thought the Soul and Gladiators would be division rivals, but that’s exactly what happened. The Gladiators, which moved into the National Conference Eastern Division this year after relocating from Las Vegas to Cleveland [Read more...]

If the Gladiators Pull This Off…

The Foster Trophy…Do we have to change our URL?

How apropos would it be of Cleveland sports if Bernie Kosar moves a two-win Arena Football League team to Cleveland and it wins a championship?  Alanis Morrisette would have to revise Ironic, as it would be simply mind-blowing.  First the Cleveland Barons, then Force, and now an AFL team in its first year of existence?

Count us in on ESPN’s Titletown USA!

As you may or may not know, the Gladiators are one win away from their first ever Arena Bowl.  The only roadblock in their way are the wavy locks of Jon Bon Jovi and his franchise, the Philadelphia Soul.

Ar-e-na?

Cleveland Gladiators

While we anxiously await the start of the NFL season, the continued attempt at non-NFL football market penetration continues as the Cleveland Gladiators topped the Orlando Predators* 69-66 in front of nearly 14,000 fans yesterday evening.

*(Let me take a second to say that I’m glad that it wasn’t the Orlando franchise that moved to Cleveland, as we would have been on the receiving end of countless jokes for having the “Predators” tag.  Carl Monday is a happy man)

The Battle of Ohio That You Likely Don’t Know About

Cleveland Gladiators, Columbus Destroyers

Reds versus Indians.  Bengals versus Browns.  Heck, even things get a bit fun when the Buckeyes play one of the not-so “The” state universities.  But what about Destroyers versus Gladiators?

Exclusive: WFNY Sits Down With Terry Pluto

Terry Pluto

It isn’t every day that a blogger gets to talk with a member of the mainstream media. I’d like to think that the odds are even slimmer if said member has been twice honored with the award of Nation’s Top Sports Columnist; not to mention one who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize on two separate occasions. But Terry Pluto, author of 23 books (including Dealing and The Franchise), as well as a featured columnist within the Cleveland Plain Dealer, was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to field questions from yours truly.

If you live in Cleveland, or follow Cleveland sports, you have read – and most likely admired – the works of Terry. Since coming over to the Plain Dealer, he is featured several times per week, garnering the entire back page of the Sunday sports section with his weekly “Talkin’” column. Assuming you’ve read his work, you know why he is the eight-time recipient of the Ohio Sports Writer of the Year award.

This discussion took place right after the Tribe was finished getting swept by the Chicago White Sox, which obviously  occurred not long after the Cavaliers were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. What follows the jump is a pretty lengthy discussion, but one that could not have been more timely given the current state of Cleveland sports. Please feel free to leave your comments below. And again, we are very thankful for the opportunity. As always, do enjoy.

Let’s start off with the Tribe. Regarding the Indians, things have not been too pretty; starting an 11 game road trip, heading to Kansas City only winning two of the last 10. Off of the top of your head, are there any immediate thoughts regarding the last three (or so) weeks?

If you look at most teams, you have four areas that determine how well you play – and if you do not have at least three of them working for you, you’re in trouble. The four are your starting pitching, your bullpen, your defense and your hitting. The Indians problem is that two of the four have consistently been wildly malfunctioning. If you consider all of the hitting metrics, the offense has been awful. [Read more...]

You Can Call Me ‘Bootslayer’

Rock “Bootslayer’ King

Needing something to take my mind off the game yesterday, I was pleased to find this on And One’s site. A Playoff Nickname Generator. How perfect. Precisely what I needed to pass some time on a day like this.

So, I tried it first with my real name….and came up with Andrew “Napkin” Schnitkey. Yeah, that one’s not gonna work. So I went with my blogging handle RockKing and came up with the nickname “Bootlsayer”. I can live with that. Not totally sure what it means, but it sounds sinister enough to be a good nickname. So try it out for yourself by clicking here, and let us know in the comments…..what is your new nickname?

03/07 Morning Minute: Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Ben WallaceWelcome back, Zydrunas Ilgauskas!  Yesterday’s Cavaliers game was entirely too close for my liking, but there is no denying that Z’s presence in the post was huge on both ends of the floor.  Yes, he had 16 points, nine boards and three blocks, but indirectly enabling Ben Wallace to do his thing (15 rebounds, three steals, one block) helped out immensely.  Proof in the pudding: Emeka Okafor and Nazr Mohammed combined to go 8-for-23 from the floor.

And while it’s good to see LeBron laughing off DeShawn Stevenson’s comments from last week, I think he could have come up with a better reference than this – you know he was sitting on that one for a while.

03/04 Morning Minute: Just Like the Real Thing

Cleveland GladiatorsWhat does it say when Cleveland pulls more fans for an Arena Football Game than New Orleans can for their Western Conference playoff-bound NBA Franchise?  I swear, with the right marketing (coupled with ticket prices and setting), you can get Clevelanders to watch any sort of football.  We.  Love.  Our.  Football.

17,000 strong attended Quicken Loans Arena last night to watch our Cleveland Gladiators win their first game of the season, taking down the New York Dragons to the tune of 61-49.  Looks a lot like Browns/Bengals, doesn’t it?  Five touchdown passes later, and this franchise has now one half of their season total from a year ago, when they went 2-14.  Even better was the reports of mini-tailgate parties held in nearby parking lots.  Tailgating…on March 3rd.  How can you not appreciate that?

Oh, and just because the team name is the “Gladiators” doesn’t mean that fans are going to stop barking or yelling not-so-nice things about the Steelers.  That’s just the way it is.  And I love it.

03/01 Morning Minute: Gladiator, Ready?

Gladiator, Ready?
Happy Gladiator Day, folks!  That’s right.  Tonight, at 7pm in Quicken Loans Arena, football comes back from its two-month hiatus as the Cleveland Gladiators will take on the New York Dragons.  And you all know what that means.  Lots and lots of Bernie

29 Touchdowns from Derek Anderson?  Pssh.  Try 85 TDs coming from the hands of Gladiator quarterback Raymond Philyaw just a season ago.  Soon to be a household name?  Otis Amey.  The second-year receiver is fresh off of a 18-touchdown, 1,000-yard rookie campaign also had 10 TDs on the ground.

And while Kosar may not be able to suit up any longer, he still has a chance to beat John Elway, as the former Bronco quarterback is affiliated with Denver’s AFL franchise.  Would it make up for the hardships of the 80s?  Not a chance, but it is still something to look forward to.
