On the first round of March Madness and why I don’t gamble

I don’t believe there is anything morally wrong with gambling.  I do not attend BYU and fall under the requirements of their honor code, and I also know plenty of people who would be thrilled to take my “action”.   People who live in Vegas that is.  So those are not reasons that prevent me from earning a million betting college hoops games this time of year.

I don’t gamble for two reasons.  One - I have no idea how to consistently predict the outcomes of these games.  Tenessee will lose by 30 to Michigan?  Okay, sure I thought that would happen.  So I primarily don’t gamble because I would lose a ton of money if I did.

But I also don’t, especially on this tournament, because I then wouldn’t be able to switch the team I’m rooting for mid-way through if the underdog has a real shot of knocking off a perennial power.  Which is one of my favorite things to do this time of year…Morehead State Nation, we did it!!!!  [Read more...]

WFNY Bracket Contest Update / NCAA Open Thread

After a predictably wild first day in the NCAA tourney there are no perfect brackets left on the board.  And in case you were worried about me winning the whole thing and taking home the prize, you can stop.  I am currently sitting in 352nd place out of 397 total.  Oh, and I was never eligible to win anything anyway.  Same goes for Scott who finds himself in the top ten.  Don’t worry folks.  Unless he ponies up some cash of his own, he won’t be sporting a Carlos Santana jersey anytime soon.  After day one, here’s your top ten.

  1. Casey – The Penske File
  2. Mitchellj – Jimmer Me Timbers
  3. Rachel – Hot in Cleveland
  4. Cory S – The Real McCory
  5. JustinD – FeArThEeLf
  6. Mike – Thad <blank> Bracket
  7. Nicholas C – Tecmohofer
  8. the big check – monchak
  9. Andy – AndyB
  10. Scott S – WFNY Scott [Read more...]

WFNY March Madness Bracket Contest

While the Cleveland news is slow (understatement) we thought we would get a leg up on our bracket competition.  We will be using Yahoo.  We will be giving out a prize to the winner. There is no cost to enter, so really you have no excuses!

Here’s how we are doing the scoring. I decided not to weight the later rounds so heavily that it won’t be interesting. Also there are bonus points based on upsets or underdogs.

Round of 64 = 1 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff
Round of 32 = 2 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff
Reg. Semis = 3 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff
Reg. Finals = 4 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff
Semifinals = 5 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff
Championship = 6 pts + Bonus = 1 x seed diff

Instructions to enter are after the jump. [Read more...]

College Basketball Season is Here….Does Anyone in Cleveland Care?

Since I first got heavily into the NCAA Basketball Tournament in March of 1985, I’ve been hooked on the college game. Whether it be Derrick Coleman at Syracuse, Jerome Lane at Pitt, or the Arkansas teams of Corliss Williamson and Scottie Thurman, I’ve always been in the tank for college basketball.

I’ve never been an pro guy, and in the past 10-12 years, the NBA has severely diluted the talent pool of the college game, which is essentially its minor league (sorry, D-League fans).

First it was the mass exodus of the prep-to-pros kids. Its obviously worked out great for guys like Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. But for every KG, there was Korleone Young. For every Kobe, there was Leon Smith. For every LBJ, there was Desagana Diop (aka Lasagna Flop). The list goes on and on.

In attempts to improve both the college and pro games, the NBA adopted a 19-year old age limit to enter the draft (or your high school graduating class must be a full year out of school). [Read more...]

Dayton Flyers Win NIT Championship; Tragedy Strikes UD Volleyball Team

The Dayton Flyers were crowned NIT Champions last night hours after tragic news hit the UD campus. Despite their convincing 79-68 victory over North Carolina, all the attention of the Dayton community was focused on the tragic death of volleyball player Kacie Hausfeld and her father Tom.

Watching the game against the defending NCAA Champions, I was enjoying the festivities as it looked like the Flyers had finally reached their peak. Using explosive athleticism, rebounding tenacity and some efficient long-distance shooting, this was the Dayton team we were supposed to see all season long. The Flyers then held on down the stretch, something they failed to do away from UD Arena throughout the regular season.

In the final minutes, with the margin looking insurmountable, I received a University e-mail announcing Kacie’s tragic death. It was a shocking blow to what had been a triumphant victory as I recalled working alongside her all year long. My sincere condolences go out to her family, the volleyball team and the entire Dayton community.

Dayton Flyers vs North Carolina Tar Heels in NIT Finals Tonight

North Carolina playing in early April is not a shock for college basketball fans. The only change this season is that they are in the championship game of the National Invitational Tournament, playing against the Dayton Flyers tonight at Madison Square Garden (7:00 pm, ESPN).

After a prolonged season of disappointments for both teams, they will match up in New York City tonight with something to prove to the entire nation. The NCAA Tournament resumes again on Saturday, meaning that for one night in NYC, the attention of the college basketball world is on UNC and UD.

As the resident UD follower here at WFNY, I’m here to break down the match up between the two teams and provide some insight as a viewer’s guide. I’ve been fortunate enough all year long to serve as the chief sports staff writer for the Flyer News on campus and it should be a fun game to watch tonight as it is a clash of the ACC vs. A-10.

College Basketball Bullet Points: Butler and West Virginia in the Final Four

The Butler Bulldogs and West Virginia Mountaineers punched the first two tickets for the Final Four last night as the NCAA Tournament continues to wind down. Both teams pulled off the upsets of higher-seeded opponents to keep up with this March’s theme of anarchy and brackets explosion. With the Final Four scheduled for Indianapolis, it will also be a historical homecoming of sorts for the surprising Bulldogs.

Ohio State is out of the tournament now as well as the two other teams from the state in Xavier and Ohio. Despite that, there are still a lot of news-worthy items to discuss in relation to the ever-crazy college basketball world. Feel free to post your comments on the following or today’s schedule of games below. Tennessee takes on Michigan State at 2:20 pm while Duke plays Baylor at 5:05 pm, all on CBS:

  • So let’s get this straight: either Butler, Tennessee or Michigan State will play in the NCAA Tournament championship this season. Does that bother you? Does that make you want to destroy things? Yeah, that’s what I thought. [Read more...]
  • OSU/Xavier Primer

You may have noticed that we haven’t shown much March Madness love on the site. Again, we don’t make apologies for this- we do what we can and what we know. However, a good friend of mine has been a college coach, and is a avid NCAA basketball fan. I asked him for some keys to look for if Ohio State and Xavier expect to get to the Final Four. Special thanks to Jon Cook for the help!

    For Ohio State:

The Buckeyes are now deemed to have a bracket that has “opened up” for them to make an easy run to Indianapolis. I think that stance discounts how difficult a match-up with Tennessee will be for the Scarlet & Gray. Tennessee is a less than ideal match-up for OSU for a number of reasons:

    1. Tennessee can play effectively with 2 bigs in the line-up (Williams & Chism), one of whom is more than capable of stepping away from the basket and shooting or even playmaking from the perimeter. [Read more...]

Bobcats Win and Your March Madness Open Thread

While we may not cover NCAA basketball much here at WFNY, we realize that many of our readers consider this the best sporting event of the year. One commenter- Ryan Lunka sent us an email asking if we would be recapping Ohio’s big win over Georgetown last night. Since he is an alum of that fine institution, we asked him if he would care to contribute. Here is his report from the game. Consider this your open thread for the tournament for the day. Craig will be in later to preview the Cavs and Bulls. Thanks Ryan!

The Bobcats of Ohio University busted quite a few brackets Thursday night with their upset victory over the Georgetown Hoyas. The Bobcats played outstanding basketball, leading by double-digits most of the game, which ended 97-83 in favor of Ohio. Junior guard Armon Bassett led Ohio with 32 points, shooting 5 of 10 from the 3-point line and making 9 of 10 free-throws. Fellow guard D.J. Cooper followed with 23 points, also shooting well from beyond the arc. [Read more...]

    Big Ten Wins “The Challenge”

BigTenLogoThe Big Ten should be proud this morning.  Last night, they won their first Big Ten vs. ACC Challenge.  The Big Ten obviously isn’t known as a basketball conference.  The Buckeyes have been pretty good in recent years, and Illinois, and Michigan State are pretty consistently good.  Wisconsin seems to be more surprisingly good every year even though it is seemingly every year that they “surprise” us.  No matter, though.  This is the first time the Big Ten has beaten the ACC in the three years of the competition.  So here is a rundown of the highlights.

First, the Buckeyes rolled through Florida State 77-64.  The Buckeyes had an 11 point lead at halftime on their way to a 13 point victory overall.  The stars of the game were Jon Diebler and Evan Turner.  Diebler was on from three point land last night hitting 6-12 from beyond the arc.  He only took one two-point shot and missed it.  That makes me laugh.  6-12 from three, and 6-13 from the field overall.  Either way, he had 22 points on the night.  The real star was Evan Turner.  Turner stuffed the box score with 25 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.  The Buckeyes game was certainly not the highlight of the night, though. Recap: 2009 NCAA Tournament, first weekend

Four days in.  By now we all might have gotten our fill of Gus Johnson, and definitely have had more than enough of Bill Raftery doing his best Tourette’s impression.   WITH THE KISS! GRUGGGG!!! We’ve screamed at the players that we love to hate.  Now we are subjected to what could be the worst three days of our lives – when we have to listen to Doug Gottleib take up 45 minutes of Sportscenter.  We get to hear the term “Bracket-buster” more than anyone should ever have to endure.  That being said, we also have some time to reset, restock our fridges, and “be contributing members of society” for a few days.

So, with all of that out of the way, here’s an incredibly superficial review of the weekend:

The Buckeyes lost to Siena, who many people (after the fact) claimed that they had said Siena was the new George Mason.  Siena gave Louisville a good game in the second round, which maybe lessens the blow to Buckeyes fans.  For me, it doesn’t.  Hopefully Club Trillion‘s take on it will help me mend, whenever it’s posted. March Madness Open Thread – 03/20/2009

Have a great weekend everyone!  Congrats to Dayton for taking out West Virginia.

Xavier, Cleveland State and Ohio State are coming up tonight.  Enjoy, and come here to comment often.

    March Madness for Ohio

    march-madness-ohio

As we all know, the annual March Madness college basketball tourney starts today.  I thought I would take this opportunity to run down all the reasons that college football is broken with the BCS and how they could use a tournament like this to close out their season.

    Just kidding.

I am going to run down all your Ohio teams and when you can catch their games.  Good luck with those brackets.
