Bridgestone Invitational Open Thread

The Bridgestone Invitational comes to an end at Firestone Country Club after a busy weekend in Northeast Ohio. It’s been hectic with the Football Hall of Fame ceremonies, the Twins Day festival, the Brown & White Scrimmage, the LeBron Bike-A-Thon and with the Indians in town, but this is one of the most exciting times of the year in the area.

With Tiger Woods way back and sitting on a +11 through the first three days, it’s been wide open so far at the tournament. Some familiar names have jumped to the top of the back, but things are different in Akron without Woods taking over per usual.

Follow along here for comments and updates on all of the golf happenings this afternoon. Check out the leaders through three rounds and their tee-off times today. [Read more...]

Bridgestone Championship Sunday Open Thread

The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational concludes today at Firestone Country Club in Akron, OH. Northern Ireland native Padraig Harrington enters the day three strokes up on Tiger Woods at -10 under through three rounds of gold. The final pairing tees off at 2:00 p.m. and after taking in a few Sundays at Firetone in my day, it is quite an event to keep track of throughout the afternoon.

The Indians also look for yet another series victory today against the Sox. Game time is at 2:05 p.m. with lefty David Huff (5-6, 6.81 ERA) facing off against Chicago’s Jose Contreras (4-10, 4.95 ERA). The Hall of Fame game also is tonight at 8:00 p.m. with the Buffalo Bills playing against the Tennessee Titans at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

As always, we are here at Waiting For Next Year to enjoy the deep enjoyment of the dog days of summer in Cleveland sports world. Leave your comments and thoughts of this blistering Sunday in the comments.

Tiger Woods is Back

While not a Cleveland story, yesterday Tiger Woods returned to golf for the first time since willing his way to victory 8 months ago on a bum knee.  And it was no ordinary tournament or bum knee.  Woods’ last tournament before surgery was the U.S. Open, which he won over Rocco Mediate.  Most people will admit that Tiger Woods’ win in that tourney at that time was one of his most remarkable due to the fact that he played the end of the tourney practically on one leg.

His injuries after that performance included a torn ACL in addition to a double stress fracture in his tibia.  Having had two ACL surgeries myself, I will say that prior to having surgery, the potential instability of a knee while walking is terrifying.  I can only imagine the feelings and pains that must have through Tiger’s body as he was forced to shift his weight back and forth on that knee without some major stabilization ligaments.
