03/15 Morning Minute: It’s NCAA Inundation!

Kent State UniversityEverywhere you look these days, it’s NCAA hoops.  You cannot help but to catch some of the MAC Tournament action, given that it’s in our back yard.  It’s looking like a Kent State University versus Akron University finals, which is more than sure to draw a solid crowd today.  Neither team had a cakewalk to get where they are at this point.  KSU needed a buzzer-beater by MAC standout Al Fisher, and a few Akron ballers have some bumps and bruises to deal with as well.  Personally, I’m a bit glad I’m not downtown today as parking would be a disaster for us working folk.  However, you can’t deny the atmosphere is going to be amazing.  Flannery’s Pub will likely be able to pay their rent for the month of March on today alone…

The sad truth to all of this is that us Clevelander’s will have to be pulling for the winner of this tournament game, possibly along with Xavier, as the “Ohio” plays given last night’s Ohio State loss to Michigan State.  It’s going to take quite a bit of luck and/or reputation for the Buckeyes to get in to the Big Dance this year – unless the committee opts for five Big Ten teams, yet again.  Losing to Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa are going to hurt.  Big time.  Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan State are pretty much locks to get in.  Matta and Company could definitely be on the outside looking in come tomorrow night.

3/14 Morning Minute: Speechless

LeBron JamesI apologize in advance, as I’ve been really pressed for time this week.  A lot going on in the ever-pressing “real” life, which I’m sure we can all attest to from time to time.  That is unless you’re DeShawn Stevenson, who apparently has entirely too much time on his hands.

That’s right.  Instead of focusing his efforts on shooting over 38 percent from the floor and being known more for his game than a mound of hair on his face, Stevenson decides to talk to the media and call one of the best players ever to play the game “overrated.”

Yes, the same Stevenson that shot 19 percent from the floor in the playoffs last year, when his team desperately needed him to step up his game.  The same Stevenson who has been in the league for seven years and has yet to average more than 11 points in a single season.  That DeShawn Stevenson.

03/12 Morning Minute: Phil ‘Er Up

Phil SavageWith hard work comes reward.  And it should go without saying that the Browns GM Phil Savage has put in many of hours to get this Cleveland football franchise back on the map.  Through solid drafting, free agency acquisitions and (most recently) key trades, Savage has been one of the most aggressive General Managers in the league, and thankfully, we may be seeing a lot more of him.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage, whose aggressive moves helped the Browns finish 10-6 last season, is close to receiving a multi-year contract extension, team owner Randy Lerner said Tuesday.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about on and off since December,” said Lerner. “We’ve kept the dialogue going, and we hope to have something done soon.”

It is looking like Savage will be extended through 2011, coincidentally the same period through which HC Romeo Crennel and OC Rob Chudzinski have recently been extended.  Randy Lerner is showing quite the top-down conviction in his front office as well as coaching staff.  While this may not be seen as a big move to some fans, players respect coaches who are respected by those above them.  And what better way to show a bit of respect than with an open checkbook?

03/11 Morning Minute: Baby Got Back Problems

Joe SmithPerhaps Danny Ferry knew what he was doing when he added a slew of depth to the Cavaliers frontcourt?  Though Cleveland beat Portland last night, 88-80, another big man went down as Ben Wallace sat out the second half with back spasms.  Thankfully, we have this kid named LeBron James who poured in his seventh triple-double on the season.  And what could be just as important was the aforementioned depth, specifically in the form of one Joe Smith.

The Wildcard” was huge off of the bench, dropping 18 points on 50 percent from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line.  When the trade went down, I mentioned how big the free throw shooting of our new arrivals would be down the stretch.  For good measure, Wally Szczerbiak drained all four of his charity stripe attempts as well.

Oh, and not to dwell on this whole +/- bit, but just for the record.  Wallace was the only starter to have a negative impact with -7.  Joe Smith’s 25 minutes of play came with a +13.  Higher than LeBron, who was second with a +10.  Just saying…

03/10 Morning Minute: Slowly, But Surely

Sasha Pavlovic
Though the Cavaliers were able to hold off the Pacers during a snowy weekend game, we’re still looking at a team that desperately needs to get healthy for the home stretch.  Thankfully, good news has come across the wire as Sasha Pavlovic is slated to return this week.

Fans may hardly have any recollection of anything that Pavlovic has done this season, as a contract issue turned quickly into a mid-foot injury towards the end of January.  It seems like agest since we’ve seen the #3 running the floor, but his return – albeit with a rough season thus far – will be very welcomed.

This leaves Zydrunas Ilgauskas (back) and Daniel Gibson (ankle) as the final pieces to the puzzle.  Speaking of Ilgauskas, he has recently received an injection in his back and is feeling better.  A mid-March return is still the target, meaning that we’ll need more big games out of Anderson Varejao in the near future.  Gibson, on the other hand, will likely miss the remainder of the March month, making Pavlovic’s return that much more important.

03/08 Morning Minute: Kidding Around

Jason Kidd's DefenseWhile I’m not a Bill Livingston fan, I occasionally envy him only in the fact that he gets to write about things the second he comes up with them.  Most of us bloggers that have other things in life to deal with from time to time come up with ideas to write about, but have to put them on the back-burner from time to time as that pesky prioritizing steps in.

When I saw today’s Livingston piece regarding Jason Kidd, I felt like the guys in the movie Knocked Up as they had a solid business model set in place, only to find out right before launch that someone else has the exact same service already up and running.  When the Kidd deal went down, it was hard to find anyone outside of Dallas that was excited.  Those of us that follow the sport know that Kidd is one of those players who is “beyond the numbers,” and while he may average a triple-double (or close to), it’s on 30 percent shooting and horrid defense.

While Bill chooses to poke at LeBron James a bit, I’m not faulting him in the least.  He wanted his team to get better.  He wanted a point guard.  He wanted someone that he had played with before.  Mike Bibby was not the answer to any of those questions, as seen by his play in Atlanta.  Thus, Jason Kidd was.

03/07 Morning Minute: That Stings

Rear View MirrorMan. Talk about taking one on the chin. I’m sure I’m not alone on this one, but I turned this game on in the second quarter. I saw LeBron James nail the three-pointer from the time line to end the half, and then took off to meet a few buddies at a local establishment. By the time I walked in the door, the Cavs were down 14 points – and that was that.

Don’t doubt for one minute that Joakim Noah wasn’t energized for this game. Tyrus Thomas was suspended, and Aaron Gray isn’t about to steal minutes in a vindication-type game. Noah hustled the entire time he was on the floor – even throwing down a huge dunk that ultimately wouldn’t count as it followed a foul on Luol Deng. But it was enough to get the crowd on their feet, and it was about that time in the game where you could see the Cavaliers simply deflate.

Call it the second of a back-to-back on the road. Call it simply another game where the team came out absolutely flat in the second half. Whichever way you look at it, all it took was an ugly 12-minute period to put the “L” in the books.

03/06 Morning Minute: Now Pinch Hitting…

lebronknicks.jpgScott had meetings all day, so you’re stuck with Rick for this edition of the Morning Minute. (Seriously, doesn’t his boss know there is work to be done here too?)

We don’t talk much college hoops here at WFNY, but have to give props to Kent State’s team. Last night they beat Miami to clinch top seed in the MAC tourney, and finished off a perfect season at home (16-0). The Flashes, who fell out of the top 25 after a loss to Bowling Green, have only Akron left before the tournament begins. Sounds like Kent State has a good chance to make the NCAA tournament even if they stumble in the MAC tourney.

It has been almost a month since Terrelle Pryor announced nothing on national television. Since then he has been leading his HS hoops team to the state playoffs, and of course visiting his buddies at Ohio State. If you read the Plain Dealer piece on him today, you get the impression that Pryor to Ohio State seems like a foregone conclusion.

Jeannette advances to the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania boys basketball state tournament. The team plays again Saturday, and if it continues to win will play next Wednesday, then Saturday, March 15, in the Class AA state title game at Penn State.

Roy Hall, the quarterbacks coach for Jeannette’s football team, believes that state title game could coincide with an official visit to Penn State by Pryor. For it’s in a football uniform that the Subject, the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the nation, is more often observed. [Read more...]

03/05 Morning Minute: Snowstorms and Shortstops

Winter Haven vs. Cleveland

Why do I have a feeling that the Ohio Primary and awful, awful weather in the Cleveland area will make a wonderful filler for the lack of sports news to discuss today?  And why do I have the feeling that this weather will be the exact same setting for the Tribe’s opening day on March 31st?

It will be quite the shellshock for the Indians as they get to galavant around Florida’s Chain of Lakes complex, where it will be 72 degrees, only to come back here where one can barely see 20 feet in front of them thanks to a wonderful combination of snow and fog.

03/04 Morning Minute: Just Like the Real Thing

Cleveland GladiatorsWhat does it say when Cleveland pulls more fans for an Arena Football Game than New Orleans can for their Western Conference playoff-bound NBA Franchise?  I swear, with the right marketing (coupled with ticket prices and setting), you can get Clevelanders to watch any sort of football.  We.  Love.  Our.  Football.

17,000 strong attended Quicken Loans Arena last night to watch our Cleveland Gladiators win their first game of the season, taking down the New York Dragons to the tune of 61-49.  Looks a lot like Browns/Bengals, doesn’t it?  Five touchdown passes later, and this franchise has now one half of their season total from a year ago, when they went 2-14.  Even better was the reports of mini-tailgate parties held in nearby parking lots.  Tailgating…on March 3rd.  How can you not appreciate that?

Oh, and just because the team name is the “Gladiators” doesn’t mean that fans are going to stop barking or yelling not-so-nice things about the Steelers.  That’s just the way it is.  And I love it.

03/01 Morning Minute: Gladiator, Ready?

Gladiator, Ready?
Happy Gladiator Day, folks!  That’s right.  Tonight, at 7pm in Quicken Loans Arena, football comes back from its two-month hiatus as the Cleveland Gladiators will take on the New York Dragons.  And you all know what that means.  Lots and lots of Bernie

29 Touchdowns from Derek Anderson?  Pssh.  Try 85 TDs coming from the hands of Gladiator quarterback Raymond Philyaw just a season ago.  Soon to be a household name?  Otis Amey.  The second-year receiver is fresh off of a 18-touchdown, 1,000-yard rookie campaign also had 10 TDs on the ground.

And while Kosar may not be able to suit up any longer, he still has a chance to beat John Elway, as the former Bronco quarterback is affiliated with Denver’s AFL franchise.  Would it make up for the hardships of the 80s?  Not a chance, but it is still something to look forward to.

03/01 Morning Minute: In Like A Lion

LeBron JamesA great win for the Cavaliers last night, although there were a few points near the end where the game was far from over. A terrific breakdown by Rick, including the ever wonderful +/- numbers that were very telling. Hopefully our big men can use this game to catapult their momentum in the right direction. And that aforementioned Ben Wallace block? Huge.

Its now getting to the point where LeBron James puts up 30 points and no one bats an eye. Couple n the 13 assists and eight boards, and you have yourself one heck of a game. While I’m speaking about the obvious, sometimes I wonder if we realize what we have and what we get to witness during each game – no pun intended.

Growing up, I watched highlight clips of stars like Dr. J, Jerry West and Bill Russell. When the next generation is watching old footage of LeBron James, theres a good chance I’ll be able to remember where I was on the day each stunning play happened.  Call it East Coast Bias, or call it being a “Homer,” but I can’t say the same for Kobe Bryant. Bryant’s an amazing talent, often underappreciated.  Has that killer instinct, and wins games.  But he’s not LeBron James.

02/29 Afternoon Minute: Mo Knows Leap Year

Mo AndrewsI don’t do this often, but I thought that with being Leap Year and all, a plug for an area musician wouldn’t hurt.

If you do not have anything going on tonight – and even if you do, reschedule – as Mo Andrews will be playing at 10p tonight at Merry Arts in Lakewood, OH.

Mo’s MySpace page can be found here, where you can find a few samples of his music.  Good stuff, no doubt.

Much of tonight’s show will be covers ranging from the Rolling Stones to Van Morrison, with plenty of material in between.  And if the menu gets you there, there will be plenty of specials to get you all through the evening.

Need directions?  Got’cha covered.  Well, Google does, but you know what I mean.

Don’t miss out.  See you there!

02/29 Morning Minute: Savage Taking Advantage

Corey Williams
Yep. He’ll fit right in
With an extra day in the month of February, Browns GM Phil Savage has wasted no time making a splash.  I mentioned yesterday that the team had significant cap space, and that I hoped that the abundance of space would not be wasted on a long-term Derek Anderson deal.

Well, it appears that Anderson (and/or his agent) are set on a long-term Tony Romo-like contract, and have not accepted the current $20 million ($10 million guaranteed) offer that is on the table.  Thus, our Pro Bowl quarterback can be yours for a first and third round draft pick!

Yes, I’m talking to you Miami!  You too, Atlanta!  Hey there, Minnesota!

We could definitely use a draft pick or two, as our first round pick belongs to Dallas, and our second round selection is now in the hands of Green Bay.

02/28 Morning Minute: More Minus Than Plus

Ben Wallace?A few days ago, I said that last night’s Cavaliers contest with the Boston Celtics would be very telling.  And telling it was.

Even by outscoring the Celtics 25-17 in the fourth quarter, Cleveland could not overcome a slow start that saw only 16 first quarter points.  In fact, Delonte West was the only starting Cavalier to have a positive +/- for the game.  As Rick broke down earlier, West racked up 20 points along with a pair of treys.  But I too would’ve liked to have seen more than two assists.

But while I’m speaking of +/-…
