Ricky Stanzi: Lake Catholic Cougar, Iowa Hawkeye, Tremendous American, and Now a Kansas City Chief

Ricky Stanzi began his football career as a junior high signal caller for the St. Mary’s of Mentor Knights, and he will continue that career as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The local Lake Catholic High School product, and former Iowa Hawkeye Quarterback, was taken with the fourth pick of in the 5th round yesterday, 135 overall.

If Stanzi’s ability to continue the marked improvement he demonstrated over his four year career in Iowa continues, the ESPN future documentary “The Stanzi Seven” is not out of the realm of possibilities.

With four QB’s off the board at the conclusion of the 1st round on Thursday, three more were selected before KC ended up nabbing Stanzi.

Stanzi heads to KC  now and will look to compete for the back-up spot behind former 7th Round pick Matt Cassel.  Cassel never started a game during his college career at USC, and recently signed for major dollars to be the Chiefs starter after successfully filling in for Tom Brady during a stretch with the Patriots a few seasons ago.

As a senior at Iowa, Stanzi threw for 3004 yards, 25 TD’s, and posted a passer rating of 157.  His biggest improvement over the season before was in the turnover department, throwing only 6 INT’s in his senior campaign as opposed to 15 as a junior. [Read more...]

NFL Players Association Asking Too Much of Undrafted Players

Labor disputes are never pretty. We knew that when the NFL Players Association decertified in an attempt to preempt any potential lockout that this process was going to become long and ugly. The problem with these kind of disputes is that often times there are a lot of innocent bystanders who get hurt in the process.

I’m not just talking about the fans, although they certainly are being unfairly asked to watch these two entities whine in public about how to split billions of dollars. I’m not talking about the run of the mill people who are employed by the teams, whether it be ushers, ticket salespeople, secretaries, etc, who potentially face job insecurity if there’s no football this fall. NFL Draft Watch: Robert Quinn Video Evidence

Scott linked to a mock draft on Twitter today that had the Browns selecting Marcell Dareus.  We’ve already done that post.  So, I skipped down to another defensive lineman, Robert Quinn and gave him the anecdotal, inconclusive Youtube video treatment.  Without further ado here is a longer clip of Quinn and his North Carolina teammates matching up with Boston College.

NFL Draft Watch: Wisconsin Defensive End J.J. Watt Video

As we wait for the NFL draft to roll around, it is interesting to do some anecdotal, inconclusive YouTube reconnaissance on guys the Browns could potentially take. We got to see a bit of this guy when Ohio State lined up against him. Check out the videos.

First up, check out JJ Watt when the Badgers beat up the Ohio State Buckeyes. There is no shame in not being able to catch Terrell Pryor. Still, Watt is a disruptive force in this game, just the same as he shoe-strings Pryor twice and flushes him out countless others. I take it with a grain of salt because I wouldn’t want to jump out on a limb for a defensive end after he tools on the Ohio State offensive line, necessarily.

What* does McNabb-to-Redskins Mean for the Browns in the Draft?

*if anything

Last Thursday I was driving home from work at 2:30 as I’d elected to take a couple hours off to enjoy the sunshine. Turns out that Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk was on 97.1 The Fan here in Columbus during that time, and he had some interesting things to say regarding a possible trade up by the Browns to select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.

I’m paraphrasing, but Florio implied that, because Bradford is represented by Tom Condon (former agent of Tim Couch, and current agent of Brady Quinn), Condon would steer Bradford away from Cleveland. In addition to that, he pointed out that there was speculation that Bradford would refuse to sign a contract before the draft. [Read more...]

NFL Draft Preview: Rey Maulaluga

Over the next few weeks, leading up to the NFL Draft, the WFNY team will disect the various draftees that may (or may not) fit into the system of the Cleveland Browns.  We’ll highlight strengths, weaknesses and the intangibles while leaving the comments for any reader commentary.

Potential Draftee: Rey Maulaluga – ILB, University of Southern California

Rey MaulalugaWhen a team is set on running the 3-4 defense, the best players on the field are typically the four linebackers.  We’ve seen the success of several teams that run the 3-4, with Pittsburgh and Arizona (two 3-4 teams) facing off in Super Bowl XLIII.  It goes without saying that the Cleveland Browns do not exactly have the tools necessary to be successful in said scheme.  Thus, the position of linebacker will be one that must be addressed during this off-season.  And when it comes to linebackers, few inside backers are getting the attention of USC’s Rey Maulaluga.

Whether it is for being on a team that is known for their all-around success, or whether it is for grinding with ESPN’s Erin Andrews, Maulaluga received a ton of coverage during the past college football season.  He totaled 73 tackles with 2.5 tackles being for a loss.  Maulaluga intercepted two passes, with one of them being returned for a touchdown – against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Remember that one?
