Thank Goodness For Darius Miles
January 14, 2009LeBron James: GQ Part Deux
January 14, 2009I got an email from the Indians team shop the other day. I bet many of you did to. It promised extra savings on clearance items. Clicking through I found a 2007 Division Champs hat selling for $4.97. (Was $23.99!) I thought about buying one to add to the collection. You know, the closet full of useless Cleveland sports clothes.
Every time a Cleveland team wins their division, or makes the playoffs for that matter, we are given the opportunity to purchase these beauties. Who can resist? We watch the team win game after game, and we deserve a reward right? Especially if it’s the first time they have won anything, or the first time in forever…
And besides, the players themselves wear them! See…
(As an aside, wouldn’t you love to go to Target some day and see Paul Sorrento wearing a 1995 A.L. Champs sweatshirt?)
Why do I call them useless? Well, how proud are you to wear those National Championship Game t-shirts? Not the ‘02 models. Or this year’s Fiesta Bowl shirt? It really is a simple rule. You don’t buy the champs shirt until they win it all. Wearing a conference champs shirt is like saying “I’m satisfied with this, no need to win anymore!” Seriously, talk about the ultimate sports jinx, let’s all rush out and buy Division Champs shirts to wear against Boston! Well congrats, you got a t-shirt to forever remember one of the most disappointing moments in Cleveland sports. Feel good about that hoodie now?
At least some of these go to good use.
Then of course we have the jerseys. You know what I’m getting at here. The ‘player who no longer plays here’ type. Same sale at the Indians team shop has plenty of Sabathia shirts you can buy. In fact, the Indians team shops are great for these. Going there in person is kind of like walking through a museum some times.
Maybe it’s time to clean out that closet. Who are you kidding, that 1997 Central Division Champs sweater doesn’t fit anymore. And I’m getting rid of my Antonio Pittman Jersey. (We haven’t won a bowl game yet with me wearing it!) But I’m keeping my Sandy Alomar. Don’t get me started there…
What about you? Is there one that you wouldn’t part with, no matter how outdated? Is there one that you are particularly embarrassed about? Anyone still have anything from the Browns last division title?

I have a Darius Miles jersey. Should I be embarrassed? Because I’m not.
I almost bought a guys 1987 browns championship shirt right off of his back in a bar, but he didn’t want to go shirtless for the rest of the night.
I still like my Cavs EC championship gear. I’m sure my Chief Wahoo wizzing on a Marlin t-shirt is around somewhere.
Did they have anymore bottles of Ryan Garko celebratory champagne? Because I’ve been looking for a bottle….
I thought this was about that R. Kelly song. Oh well.
I have had bad luck with Jersey’s.
In 99 I went to the Canton HOF and bought a Speilman jersey which didnt even take me out of preseason (although i think we beat Dallas at Fawcett that year), I was a Kevin Johnson supporter until we all realized that he was a crappy player on a crappy team and released him. Then I moved onto Lee Suggs and well yeah, I mean if you think about it……well anyhow I stopped buying jersey’s.
The lone highlight that I still cherish is my Kenny Lofton #7. I still think he may get a call from Shapiro so I can bust it out for the 3rd time!
Just last month I bought an authentic Cavs road jersey. They normally go for $180, but I got mine for $50. Why? Because it bears the name, number, and signature of none other than ‘Amon ‘Ones.
It’s my favorite piece of Cleveland apparel thus far.
Oh also, although y’all might have seen this on Let’s Go Tribe, I’m trying to get rid of a Carmona Road Alternate, brand-new-tags-and-everything-etc-etc. So, if anybody is a 44 and has a hundred bucks laying around…

@CameronFrye: Hey! Who invited you!?
1995 AL Champs. At the time, that WAS quite the accomplishment.
I own two Indian’s bobbleheads (Thome and Cy Cy Sabathia), and they’re both sitting on my desk here at school.
During the day, they just smile and nod every time I ask them if they like it here. But sometimes, at night, I can hear them whispering something about chopping me up and selling my kidneys on the black market for the big bucks.
Maybe it’s time I put them away…
maybe that’s not all that should be put away…
Casey Blake 1948 throwback jersey…the one with the really politically incorrect indian on it. It’s nothing short of glorious.
I loved when Lofton came back to Cleveland because everyone busted out their old Jerseys and “jersey t-shirts”.
The only thing that made me sick was when I went to one of the first games he was back.. it might have been the first maybe the second… and he gets a standing ovation from my section (right behind the indians dugout)… which is fine. But then we keep standing through his at bat.. which is fine… then he pops out foul… and he gets a round of applause!!! WHY?!?!
@scott i heard this was the place to be and had some nice ice tea.
I have a Ty Detmer jersey-shirt. That’s all I have to say about that.
Thanks for the laugh, Brick. Cracked me up…
After consecutive years of Tim Couch and Courtney Browns jerseys, I vowed never to buy a jersey of a current athlete again. Never ever. Not even LeBron.
The only jerseys hangning in my closet are Bernie Kosar and Jim Brown. And, the few times I do put on a Bernie jersey to go to a sports bar – I’m not going to lie to you – I get laughed at quite a bit. (I live in New York now, not Cleveland)
Oddly enough, I do have a Maurice Clarrett OSU jersey that I wore only to the ’02 Fiesta Bowl. I’ve never worn it since and never will – but I see no need to throw it out.
I am still proudly wearing a Brian Giles #22 “jersey” t-shirt, complete with paint stains and holes.
I was a huge Giles fan when he was here, and I’ll never give that one up.
Oh man, that reminds me of my ill-fated Karim Garcia t-shirt jersey…what was I thinking?
“(As an aside, wouldn’t you love to go to Target some day and see Paul Sorrento wearing a 1995 A.L. Champs sweatshirt?) ”
Funny you said that. I saw Travis Prentice in the Walmart on Brookpark & Teideman in I’m wanting to say 2000/2001 somewhere in there. He was wearing a “Browns Training Camp XL” tshirt, shorts, and flip flops. He was buying dog food and sunny delight. I shook his hand and wished him luck in the upcoming season. All this and I couldn’t tell you when the hell my anniversary is.
My Speilman jersey hangs in the closet, as does my (soon to be ex-Brown, probably) Braylon Edwards. I hope I can still rock my Varejao jersey/wig for many seasons to come.
I still have a Browns 1989 AFC Central Division Champs sweatshirt. I don’t really wear it too often, but I like looking at it once in a while to remind me that there was a time when we actually beat the Steelers…
I also have a Kosar tshirt from the 80s, but I wear that one all the time.
I’m from Toronto, but I’m a huge Indians fan. One year, my family humoured me by driving to Cleveland to let me see a game at Muncipal Staudium. Afterwards, I got my Albert Belle jersey signed. Awesome!
;ast year at the park I saw a Jihn Rocker Indians shirt. I would kill for that on
